Happy Saturday, everyone. My name is Mary Kling, and it is my pleasure to be hosting today’s Poetics for the first time. All right, I will admit it. I am VERY excited to be here among the talented and dedicated people of dVerse.
A few weeks ago Karin had us write about summer here in the pub. This week we are going to turn our attention to autumn, which is right over the horizon.
In the Northern Hemisphere autumn is traditionally thought to begin on the September Equinox. This is not for a few weeks yet, but I am in an autumn state of mind. Children are now back at school. The days are getting shorter. There is often a chill in the air, and more often than not, one carries a jacket. Leaves are beginning to turn to shades of yellow, orange, and red. Harvest is going on all around. And one can hear the cheers of the crowds at football and baseball games.
I often think about the human life cycle in terms of the seasons. Spring is the time of birth or rebirth, youth, looking forward, dreams. Summer is maturity, a time of good health and vitality, accomplishment. It is a season of green richness and fullness.
I look at autumn as the season of fulfillment, wisdom, and freedom — a season when one also has a sense of one’s own mortality and must find a way to come to terms with it. Autumn of life is a beautiful season, but one knows that the beauty is temporary, to be savored, but will not last. Autumn, to me, is a reflective time when we may spend time looking back (with fondness and nostalgia) and ahead (perhaps some trepidation). We know autumn leads to winter, but for today we won’t go there. Today in the pub we are going to spend time with autumn.
I invite you today to contemplate autumn in whatever way feels right to you. This could take you in the direction of exploring its richly colorful beauty, the leaves, the harvest, back to school joys, apple trees laden with ripe apples, geese honking as they head south, apple cider with cinnamon sticks, the cheers of the football crowds. These are the more usual ways of thinking about autumn.
However, perhaps you would like to stretch a bit and reflect on the metaphoric autumn, the season of life which corresponds to the season. Are you living in the ‘autumn of your life’ now, or are you still in ‘summer’? What are the tasks of life’s autumn? The symbols? The joy or the sadness? What do you fear as you approach ‘winter’?
Or perhaps you could reflect on the autumn of something like love or the autumn of a particular talent or skill. Put yourself in an autumn state of mind, linger there for a while enjoying the view and the feelings, and see where autumn takes you. Then share with us, so we all can see the same view!
Before I leave you to write your own poem, I am going to share two favorite short autumn poems I like:
Autumn Fires by Robert Louis Stevenson
In the other gardens
And all up the vale,
From the autumn bonfires
See the smoke trail!
Pleasant summer over
And all the summer flowers,
The red fire blazes,
The grey smoke towers.
Sing a song of seasons!
Something bright in all!
Flowers in the summer,
Fires in the fall!
Autumn Day by Rainer Maria Rilke
Lord: it is time. The huge summer has gone by.
Now overlap the sundials with your shadows,
and on the meadows let the wind go free.
Command the fruits to swell on tree and vine;
grant them a few more warm transparent days,
urge them on to fulfillment then, and press
the final sweetness into the heavy wine.
Whoever has no house now, will never have one.
Whoever is alone will stay alone,
will sit, read, write long letters through the evening,
and wander along the boulevards, up and down,
restlessly, while the dry leaves are blowing.

The bar is open; and there are potato chips and popcorn available on the bar. Help yourselves, as you share some good poetry….on this chilly autumn day.
Hi Mary! Have any nice fall apples around here somewhere? Thanks so much for hosting–great article & Oh–Rilke…need I say more!
Definitely have apples, Susan. Also apple cider if you like.
yummy!
love some fresh cider….
Welcome to the pub, Mary!!! And what a job you’ve done setting the stage for us…I am Autumn at heart all the year through…the crisp mornings, early evenings…and everything that falls (no pun) between! Out for the afternoon and early evening, but will be ready to jump into all your poetic leaf piles upon my return!
Tash, nice to know you are Autumn at heart. I am a Summer person, but I can appreciate the beauty of this time of year. Thanks so much for the welcome, Tash.
woohoo… thanks for a great prompt mary..i’m a bit late…watched Intouchables…such an awesome film…still crying…smiles…out on the trail now..
Don’t rush, Claudia. We’ll have a long night.
woot…love to see you behind the mary…great job on the prompt…had a little fun with it…the last gasp of heat before the chill if you will…smiles….autumn is my fav time of year….
You did have fun with it, Brian. What a wonderful poem you wrote.
So good to have you tending the poetic bar, Mary. As I’ve looked at some of my poetry for publishing, I’ve found that autumn seems to be the most prolific source of inspiration for me. I will post an old one as soon as I can, as this is a busy weekend, but hope to write something new for OLN. Nice prompt and Rilke is on my top ten list of all time favorites.
Hi Victoria… Glad that autumn inspires you; and I will look forward to reading whatever you link. I really enjoy Rilke too.
HI Mary – so nice to see you/hear from you – the Rilke is also one of my very most favorites. Thanks for the broad and interesting prompt. I am working on something but right now it’s way too long so trying to think I can shorten it. k.
I’ll look forward to it, Karin!
Great post, Mary! We rejoiced in one cool breeze earlier and are looking forward to a little front that might bring us a few degrees down from 98.
LOL, Laurie! Hardly autumn-like. Smiles!
Wooo Hooo on YOU hosting behind the bar Mary.
Great prompt. Love all the colours appearing on our trees here now …
Have a good night everyone
Bren, I would love to see your part of the world in this season!! We are a little bit behind you, but the color will not be long in appearing.
Lovely to see you behind the bar today Mary. I’m going to wander off for a while and see if I have any words to say about autumn. I hope to post some thing later! If all goes well and I can manage the time. Finally got back to the beach yesterday! Still unpacking.
Nice to see you, Gay!
I’m having trouble focusing on Autumn right now. We’re in the midst of a tornado watch here in Queens, NY.
wow that is quite scary….hope that it comes to nothing….
i hear there were two…one in Queens and one in Brooklyn….hope all is well…
Nice prompt Mary.
I’ve dug out an autumnal poem written earlier in the year, but it’s nice to revisit it in the appropriate season. You’ve also got me inspired to go and look at trees and hope for leaves falling in my hair….
I’ve been taking a lot of pictures of trees in autumn this year. They seem to help my ‘creative juices.’
I totally agree with you – I have some beautiful trees right outside my window and I’m just waiting for them to turn.
popping out for a bit to tend the brush fire if the rain has not put it out…be back shortly to play catch up and return visits….
Hope the rain has helped, Brian.
it was a very cold rain…and got two of my three brush piles burned….so not bad at all…we took out a row of trees earlier this year…dont worry we have planted others elsewhere…but anyway, that and the tree damage from the derecho we had left me with a lot to burn and have been putting it off til today…have showered and still smell of woodsmoke…ha….
A feel of Autumn is here http://velvetmedia.wordpress.com/2012/09/08/woman-as-a-season/ have a great time writing and will see you all along the way
Nice to see you and read your words, Clawfish.
I’m heading out for a little while here; but will be back a bit later and catch up with all. Looking forward to reading some more fine autumn poems! The bar will remain open in the meantime. Smiles.
Much to love about autumn–thanks Mary!
Yes, indeed there is!
Thanks for the prompt. Keeps me happy between that dead time after Dr Who and before The Thick of it! Some benefits of autumn!
Smiles, John!
WOW, I love that Rilke poem, even its sternness—whoever has no house now . . . .
Maybe I haven’t said all I have to say about autumn after all.
I wrote a somber poem , I have fighting depression this weekend. While I the fall of the year it can be depressing as a season of life. After Fall comes Winter, I don’t have a death wish but growing old does not look like a walk in the park.
hey man…chin up…there is lots of life even in the fall…whatever is saddling you i hope it passes…fall can be tough for many people….
Hi! Susan recommended this site to me… I’m sorry to be late posting, but I added my link to the list. I am obviously new to dverse, but will hopefully find my way around quicky! Great to meet you all.
Nice to meet you. I’ll be over to read in the morning – it’s way past my bedtime!
Very nice to meet you too! Thank you. I look forward to sharing and reading work with you all… Soraya
Nice to meet you too. Welcome!
welcome….glad to have you….
if you have any questions just let us know….
Thank you very much!
A poem about fall? In the immortal words of Navin R. Johnson: “I’ve got one!”
Yeah, I made the deadline — and I did it playfully. Thanx for the fun prompt.
Thanks Mary, for bringing Autumn to my attention! Summer only arrived last Wednesday. My contribution is somewhat distraite, as I was watching the last night of the proms while writing it.
Viv, I did hear that your area didn’t have much summer this year. Hope your autumn will be warm, colorful, and wonderful.
Mary! Awesome prompt….autumn certainly is on the way…although bizarrely in the uk we’ve got summer sunshine still …. It won’t last though!….it’s bedtime here…but will be doing the rounds tomorrow am and can’t wait to read! (it’s still ok to eat popcorn before bed though right?)
Popcorn is good any time of the day or night! We in the Midwest have had summer sunshine a long while too. Today was fallish though. We never know what to expect here! Smiles.
Hi Mary – I didn’t get mine as short as I’d like, but it’s a bit of a story so think it goes by pretty fast. Thanks again. k.
I enjoyed yours! I remembered the times you wrote about too!
very cool piece…what i love about these is seeing how variable the responses are…yours was a very unique direction k…and well written…
just getting back in….my older son, Logan is getting his foot xrayed right now…might have broken it falling out of a tree this evening…oy….be around shortly…
Oh, no, Brian. I hope it really was not a break!
Ouch, was he imitating his father’s foolishness? (written by a foolish father)
PS: is there a way to activate an option to “follow replies to your comments” on this blog?
ha. maybe sabio….he is ok, no break, just a deep bruise…he’ll be off of it for a few days…and out of the trees for a while….
Not chilly, but feels like autumn outside …marvelous !
I’m back! Mulled cider, please, and a room for the night!
mmm i will join you with cider…i love it…need to break out our mulling ball and some spices….
I am looking forward the leaves changing colors, and a new harvest. Autum is one of my favorite season next to spring.
mine as well….hey i fixed your link, so a few more might be able to visit now…enjoy popping around and meeting others as well….
I’ll be leaving the bar for tonight. I will check poem links tomorrow throughout the day..hope that if you post you’ll visit other links, enjoying the camaraderie of other poets and the sense of community we have here at dVerse. Good night, everyone. The bar will stay open as long as someone is here. Honor system, you know.
rest well mary…you did a great job tonight…will hang out for a bit and greet people as they come in….
Haven’t yet begun to work on mine yet, Mary, but I wanted to tell you what a beautiful prompt you have given us. Your commentary and photos, coupled with that piece of heaven by Rilke, really made my afternoon.
i look forward to yours lydia!
Mine’s done, Brian…….and it is as far from Rilke as you’re likely to find.
ok crisis averted…back out on the trail….thanks to those that visited in my absense….smiles.
caught up and heading to bed…tired after busting up wood and dragging it to the burn pile all afternoon….be back in the morning though to check the overnights….goodnight poets
Don’t know how you do all you do, Brian. Hope you are not sore in the morning!
whew…waking to 43 links…will play catch up with as many as possible and then leave for a one week business trip… off to get a coffee and then out on the trail.. smiles
You sound so busy, Claudia. Don’t worry about coming by my place….visit a newbie instead and then pack. Travel safely.
ok…need to leave now…didn’t manage to catch up with everyone…hope to be back in the late evening for some more commenting..
Great write-up Mary, really love the detail and possibilities you explore with the theme. Awesome first Post. Can’t wait to read all the Autumnal poetry.
My images are a little different, but the same poignant season…quite the best time of the year…
Autumn is my most favorite season http://www.poetfreak.com/text/71270/autumn.html
Hello Mary, sorry I’m late and thanks for the inspiration! Look forward to reading and hopefully commenting on lots of lovely poems later today.
Hi, thanks for this prompt. Pushed for time, I’ve done the best I could.
wow, Mary! another few weeks and you’ll be providing prompts EVERYwhere! it’s great to see you here.
♥
Excellent prompt Mary … after our wettest summer in 100 years here in Devon .. we’re actually looking forward to autumn! Post will be in shortly.
good morning poets! waking to a nice crisp morning here…and feeling fall more and more….be around shortly to see what you brought….
Good morning everyone, I, too, will be heading around again! Looks like you’ve all been busy overnight.
I have posted responses on a number of Word Press blogs, and they have not appeared. (And there was no indication they used comment moderation.) I hope if people do not find a comment from me they will CHECK their spam or unmoderated posts. It so frustrating when that happens.
perfect timing to go with my new summer into fall header, thanks ya’ll
Hi Mary, good to see you here, thanks for hosting! I’m running late, but I made it! I love autumn–always an inspiring topic to write about!

Great site and love the post. I just found this site and linked up a poem for the first time although in general I wouldn’t call myself a poet. I love the season of Autumn. Thanks. Behind The Smile.
Enjoyed your introduction very much, Mary. I love the Rilke poem. And I made it–just under the wire, as usual : | Thank you for hosting.
you made it back…smiles.
Sorry missed by an hour.
Mary, what fun to find you tending bar at dVerse. It is autumn for certain. Just bought myself a fuzzy hoody to celebrate the cooler temps……..
Enjoy that hoody, Sherry!! So nice to see you here.
Great prompt Mary! I love all that you included to represent Autumn and her glory~
Me, I love snuggling up with a cozy throw and watching movies. The sight of crisp apples and the gorgeous Harvest Moon. I also love the holidays that make an appearance. It is a time of magic, for me~
Ella, it definitely is a magic season. Nice to see you here too!!
Really nice reading and photos to compliment.
My favorite spots. Glorious is the right word.
