On 21st December 2011 a shy, middle-aged man from Scotland crept nervously into the dVerse Poets Pub, dropped a link into Mr Linky for the first time and then snuck quietly out again, stopping only long enough to leave a comment and then read a few of the poems that others had posted before he’d plucked up enough courage to add his to the list. Four people followed him out, read his poem and left comments on his blog –
and from that moment I was hooked.
Now, just 15 months later, it is my pleasure to welcome you – one and all – to the pub for Open Link Night 83. I don’t know exactly what we’ll be serving up tonight – that depends entirely on what you choose to bring – but I do know there’ll be poetry, and lots of it. Most likely there’ll be responses to previous prompts; there’ll be some form poetry and lots of free verse; there’ll be romance, emotion, at least one limerick, some haiku, maybe even a rant or two, but whatever your taste, you’ll almost certainly find it catered for here.
If you are new here, let me tell you how it works; for the regulars, here’s a reminder:
- Write a poem and post it to your webpage.
- Click on the Mr. Linky button below and enter your name and direct url/web address to your poem
- There you will also find the list of those participating this week. You might want to refresh this occasionally or check back in as there are people joining over the next 33 hours.
- If it’s your first time here, please leave a comment to say so. That makes it much easier for us to find you and encourage you by visiting your site.
- Read other poets that have linked. Let them know what you thought, how the poem moved you, what you think of their style, what caught your attention. The not-so-secret formula to receiving more comments on your blog is to read and comment on the linked poems. Please don’t forget to return the favour of those who have visited and commented on your work.
- Encourage others to participate through social media, promote your own piece and others.
- Have fun meeting and engaging with your fellow poets.
I can hear crowds of poets gathering at the doors, chanting “Why are we waiting?” so I think it’s time for me to retire to a safe position behind the bar and activate the automatic door release. Here they come!
Happy Tuesday everyone ~ Tony

Tony, I totally relate to the feeling … sneaking in, dropping a poem and sneaking out again… now I love hearing and giving comments on each other’s poems here. Love this group!
Now, for those who are confused by the new name, it’s Bajanpoet here… I have become PassionPoet – embracing my on stage persona as a spoken word artiste and trying to consolidate my internet personas into one. So… It’s still Bajan here, unless you wanna call me Passion *grin* Up to you … but just don’t want you guys confused!
Ok, Tony, fire me up a pint – and a round of pithy poetry for all the other poets ’round the bar!
Tony said:
One pint coming right at you, Bajan. Nearly 50 poems in already, so there’s plenty of choice.
Madeleine Begun Kane said:
Thanks, as always, for this wonderful forum. And happy Tuesday!

The first casualty of the evening. Honestly, I’d forgotten the effect the kilt has on the ladies 😀
tashtoo said:
All good! My daughter delivered me a batman keyboard to plug in…as seen on tv! Good enough to get me commenting…no comment on the kilt reference…ahem 😉 Looking sharp!
Tony said:
I love wearing the kilt – although it only comes out for special occasions.

I am reminded of the time I linked with Dverse for the first time. The poets here are all very good and accomplished so I was a little terrified to put my work in the mix. But the people here have been quite welcoming and great. Needless to say, I like this place. Thanks for hosting us tonight. 🙂
Tony said:
That was my feeling too, but I’m so glad I decided to join in 🙂

Hi Tony. I’m posting the poem I wrote for Claudia’s challenge about knowing when to let go, knowing when not to. I’ve been running late more and more often with both writing and reading. And now I am yawning into nap time late so I’ll be back to read later yet.
claudia said:

Fáilte to you too, Ginny. Your poem speaks eloquently of Lincoln’s greatness – and his legacy lives on today.

Tony, this was a delightful invitation, I do so look forward to reading your words. Haven’t been around for a bit, so I know that I am in for a treat.

Finally made it! Was delayed by a work meeting over lunch. And I could really use an Irish Coffee (or a Scottish Coffee, if such a thing exists) to get through the next meeting. Hope to be back to read some poetry soon. Peace, Linda
Tony said:
Irish coffee coming right up 🙂 Work meetings over lunch – you have my heartfelt sympathy. This bartender prescribes some therapeutic poetry for your condition – and there’s certainly some of that out on the trail.
Tony said:
Well folks, it’s been fun, but here in Scotland it is almost tomorrow, which means it’s time for me to get some shut-eye. I saw the boss – aka Brian – in here a moment ago, so I’m sure he’ll look after you well 🙂 I’ll be back in the morning. Have fun out on the trail.

I wore me kilt in honour of our new host. Congrats. And I wrote me a Spanglish type poem from French Quebec-land about a Sunday in Argentina. Super exciting, eh?
Looking forward to your poems.

Tony said:
Intriguing Henry. I’ll be over to read soon.
Sabio Lantz said:
Hey Tony — nice intro.
Unlike you, I have never been accused of being “shy” — and my poem shows why.
I’m looking forward to dropping in and reading a few of yours.
One pint of the warmest, bitterest beer you’ve got on tap please!
Tony said:
One pint coming right at you. Is that warm and bitter enough? Oh, you wanted one with bits in too 🙂
Sabio Lantz said:
Ah, bitters are my preference! I just learned that the Brits (I guess the Scots too perhaps) call “Pale Ale” “bitters”. And that Bitters use coke to roast their malt. Interesting.
But bitter and Bitters are what I like — again, you can tell by my poetry too. 🙂
Tony said:
We have a huge variety of beers here, not to mention lagers. There are Pale Ales, often referred to as Indian Pale Ales or simply IPA, then there are bitters which are darker and more bitter (doh!) and then there are stouts like Guinness (which is Irish, but there are certainly Scottish beers which are similar). Then there are “real ales” – traditionally these are produced by smaller breweries. “Warm beer with bits in,” is a disparaging way of referring to real ales 😉
gardenlilie said:
Hi Tony! Nice to meet you. I’m late, watching the state off the union address in the states. I don’t have a poem yet, but I still have time.

It’s been really fun and it’s good to welcome those who wait until the pub is quieter too. Still the best part of 10 hours before Mr Linky closes 🙂

Well folks, Wednesday night is heading rapidly towards Thursday morning, so I’m off to get some sleep. There’s still a little time on Mr Linky – I’m 5 hours ahead of EST. It’s been fun. I’ll catch any late posters tomorrow.
Speaking of tomorrow, I’ll be handing the keys over to Gay Reiser Cannon who will be bringing a FormForAll prompt for your muses to work with.

good morning…sneaking in the pub before mr. linky closes to get my morning-ly poetry dose..smiles
Tony said:
Guten Morgen Claudia. I told you I’d be in to clean up before handing the keys over. Right, that’s all the tables wiped down, now to put the chairs up and clean the floor. Then over to the bar – want to leave the place spick and span for Gay. As my Dad taught me, a job is not complete until the tidying up is done.
