Welcome to another wonderful Open Link Night – this time in the week when we spill poetry all over the place and enjoy reading each other’s work.
My name is Claudia Schönfeld and oh I fell in love with poetry – head over heals about one and a half years ago…this is why I‘m here and this is what keeps me reading and writing.. nothing else.. It‘s a kind of love I can‘t fully explain, some sort of magic when the words form on the page and this staccato heartbeat which beds me somewhere between awe & thunderstorm, vulnerability and wild desire – always hungry for more.
I also fell in love with Bukowski, this was about a year ago when i stumbled upon the poem below…the first poem I read by him..and I wept madly because it touched me somewhere I couldn’t locate exactly. Bukowski says: “An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way. An artist says a hard thing in a simple way.”
When I read poetry I want to see through the poem like through binoculars and I want to see LIFE, I want to feel the pulse of the poet and the time, I want to smell the sweat and pain and joy, hanging on the words – nothing more, nothing less..
Thought I‘d share this first Bukowski poem with you and then.. Poets… let‘s have a great time out on the trail, enjoying each other‘s work and celebrating poetry..

An Almost Made Up Poem
by Charles Bukowski
I see you drinking at a fountain with tiny
blue hands, no, your hands are not tiny
they are small, and the fountain is in France
where you wrote me that last letter and
I answered and never heard from you again.
you used to write insane poems about
ANGELS AND GOD, all in upper case, and you
knew famous artists and most of them
were your lovers, and I wrote back, it’ all right,
go ahead, enter their lives, I’ not jealous
because we’ never met. we got close once in
New Orleans, one half block, but never met, never
touched. so you went with the famous and wrote
about the famous, and, of course, what you found out
is that the famous are worried about
their fame –– not the beautiful young girl in bed
with them, who gives them that, and then awakens
in the morning to write upper case poems about
ANGELS AND GOD. we know God is dead, they’ told
us, but listening to you I wasn’ sure. maybe
it was the upper case. you were one of the
best female poets and I told the publishers,
editors, “ her, print her, she’ mad but she’
magic. there’ no lie in her fire.” I loved you
like a man loves a woman he never touches, only
writes to, keeps little photographs of. I would have
loved you more if I had sat in a small room rolling a
cigarette and listened to you piss in the bathroom,
but that didn’ happen. your letters got sadder.
your lovers betrayed you. kid, I wrote back, all
lovers betray. it didn’ help. you said
you had a crying bench and it was by a bridge and
the bridge was over a river and you sat on the crying
bench every night and wept for the lovers who had
hurt and forgotten you. I wrote back but never
heard again. a friend wrote me of your suicide
3 or 4 months after it happened. if I had met you
I would probably have been unfair to you or you
to me. it was best like this.

Hi Claudia and everyone! I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone has to share today. I just wrote what I shared today..kind of eerie, but fun!
Woooo Hooo…. delayed supper to be here for the doors opening…haha Bad me!!
It’s out of the box, shove it in the oven food…..LOL
welcome and wishing us all a great evening…let’s set the place on fire with our poetry..it’s cold outside..smiles
Had too much fun last week to stay away.
great!!
I bow to the word weaver that is Claudia. You may have only stumbled upon poetry a year and a half or so ago, but lady….these words have been in your heart for much longer. It’s exciting when you finally have that moment and realize you can free them. LOVE the poem you included…and love the fact that you guys are rocking In The Presence of Poets…can’t wait to get my copy 🙂
Can’t believe it’s almost Christmas. Off to read some poems. Here’s mine :

Kind regards to all at The Pub.
yes, i want to syllable-dance!
hey everyone! missed y’all.. happy oln! woot 🙂
Thanks as always for your great job hosting this! Here’s my latest limerick and Limerick-Off challenge: High Limerick.
Hi Claudia, amazing to think that you have been involved with poetry such a short time. (You must have been writing in another life.) Thanks for the Bukowski.
I have done a very boring this time, which is that I am linking to a revised version of the draft poem I wrote for Victoria’s prompt on quilts on Saturday. The poem really is somewhat different, but I’m afraid will feel a bit old hat to those who read it before. I’m glad to repost though, because (as I note in post) revisiting stuff once out in the world used to be excruciatingly difficult for me. Somehow, now that I’m posting quite a bit, it just doesn’t feel so embarrassing. Anyway, thanks again. K.
i think it wasn’t boring at all.. enjoyed the re-write… it’s a beautiful piece karin
Thanks for holding up the bar, Claudia. Glad to be joining you all this week.
“I loved you like a man loves a woman he never touches, only writes to, keeps little photographs of.”
What a poem, to pen down thoughts as if random, yet truly arousing, loved it!
glad you liked it..it still is my fav by bukowski
I’m early for a change. Glad to get an early start reading this week. Thanks, Claudia.
Cat is here to play too, will get around here and there for a view.
barkeeper get that cat some milk..oh.. i am the barkeeper..smiles
I can see how that poem spoke to you and initiated you into poetry. I can’t help but wonder who she was. Sylvia Plath?
I am sharing a tick tock stop the clock poem today.
don’t think it was sylvia plath…even though there are sad parallels..
Happy to see so many people here 😀
happy to see you here mr. white..
I’m back. Love that poem; I can see why it made you cry…
I’m in… I was unsure about whether to share this poem. It’s definitely not as personal as some of the others I’ve shared and maybe that’s why I was hesitant… I’m not sure, really.
But, here it is and hopefully you’ll enjoy it.
Looking to forward to reading you all!
took me a while but…on my way to read…
Happy open link night everyone,
I am glad to be back as my studies kept me away last week..
Cheers!
welcome back in the pub gwen.. hope you’re enjoying yourself
Hey, congratulations on the publication. I just bought one.
woohooo!
Great to see you behind the bar, where all those big machines that make scary noises are–what do you mean, they’re the ghosts of old poets’ typewriters–I wanted an espresso! ;_) Thanks for the full glass of vintage Bukowski Claudia–there’s all kinds of insight in that poem.
what ..? what did you say..? didn’t understand you because these big machines make such a lot of noise..smiles
i always find there’s lots of insight in most of bukowski’s poems and it comes across very un-artificial… now getting you your espresso..
Claudia, like Tash says, those poems you write have been living in you longer than a year and a half. Thank you for sharing your poems and for sharing Bukowski’s poem.
I’m back sharing this week. A Christmas poem of sorts called Parade Posterior http://orchardswindowsroses.blogspot.com/2011/12/parade-posterior.html
Looking forward to reading more poetry this week. The past couple of weeks I didn’t get to read much and I’m due for a large helping of poetic words.
Eat, drink, and be merry everyone!
Eat, drink, and be merry …now that sounds like the perfect thing to do.. smiles
Oh, oh….”There’s no lie in her fire”….Oh, beautiful words!
Claudia! Only a year and a half??? Good God, girl….you are on Fire!
This week is a short essay on “A Christmas Miracle” a very personal piece, about family, disrupted family, etc. Followed by a short ‘flasher’ (200 words): “A Reason for the Season”….
Just my reason, all others have legitamacy where ever they are.
Thank you all here….you Rock!
Lady Nyo, waving her sleeves.
can’t wait to read..
Got in early this time, well morning here in Oz, so Ill just have a coffee before w$#k and be back later tonite to check some writes
waving heavily in your direction…envying you for the spring time you have over there right now..
Summer although down south its a tad cold lol Waving back…..
There is something about Bukowski’s writing – it reads so true, as if without thought words stream from somewhere deep inside himself… and he doesn’t even try to stop them.
yes exactly..it reads so true and so naturally – this is what i love about his writing
my only wish is to figure out how to create a blog here, am so lost and would love to join in, where do you go to create your own blog, and how do you enter your poems, I have tried on an off for months to figure this out but am still as lost as the first time I tried
the two main hosts i’d say are wordpress.com and blogger.com – you can register and start a blog for free and then post your poem there and link the URL back here… if you need help, give me a shout.. i’m right behind the bar..smiles
I haven’t read Bukowski before since I prefer rhyme, but that was quite a poem. I can see why it touched you. I really really liked the quote by him, “An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way. An artist says a hard thing in a simple way.”
Claudia, I wouldn’t have guessed that you’ve only been writing poetry for such a short time. Thanks for sharing about you. Wow, you’ve got it all in there waiting to get out. 🙂 You ARE on fire, woman– to reiterate what Lady Nyo said above!
I’ve posted again today, not one of my favorites or best by any means, but always fun to participate and read others’… I’ve got my coffee and laptop and am starting to read. 🙂
smiles..yes..was kind of a revolution when i discovered poetry.. the dam broke when i met ed pilolla and brian miller on the web.. smiles..and now off to read your entry..
hi Claudia….today I share with all some words recently put together…I hope you don’t mind and that there is something for all to enjoy…thank you for the venue
Peace, rd
absolutely love this..thanks so much for sharing your words with us..
you’re very kind…thanks again
Peace
I stopped by to read your article, Claudia. I am glad I did. Wonderful penning, as always. Thank you. I’m not linking tonight since work keeps me from committing to read poetry in return but I will likely pop in to read a few of the linked poems. What a fabulous turn-out! Have a fun evening. *sipping a soda since I am still at work … darn it* Smile!
i will have a beer ready for you as soon as you get off work..smiles
hope you’re enjoying the party… need some sleep and will be back in the early morning… my alarm is set for 5 am…ouch… maybe i’ll be dreaming poetry tonight..smiles
I loved you
like a man loves a woman he never touches
loved that. Claudia, are you telling me you have only been writing poetry for a little over a year? Wow.
Oh it’s so good to be back at the bar – I’m parched! Good sippin’ Bukowski on the rocks. Can’t wait to wet my whistle on a few of the links! Cheers!
Great article, Claudia and a knock out poem that inspired me. Thanks. Love some of the links already.
I want so much to stay but had an elbow injected today for tendonitis…too painful to hang around today…perhaps tomorrow!?
oh sorry to hear this victoria..hope you are better soon…
Bukowski is breathtakingly brilliant and right up there with Will. Excellent choice!
Good evening everyone!! I’m a little late but I look forward to a great read. Enjoy yourselves!!!

I’ve got “Sumthin Sinister, Part 2” in the mix tonight.
http://sundrysumthins.wordpress.com/2011/12/13/sumthin-sinister-part-2/
You probably all know haiku. But in this season of good cheer I decided we needed a new, more light-hearted poetic form that can be less serious and perhaps even pun-populated. So I offer you Lo Ku — five new short examples of verse that borders upon the ridiculous. I hope they will give you a laugh.
Anyone want to write some more?
Happy riffs!
I nearly forgot this morning. Looking forward to reading. Cheers!
love me some bukowski claudia…thanks for a great opening…my love of poetry began shortly before yours but still only a few years ago…sorry i have not been around the pub much tonight but i have been out on the trail checking out what everyone has to offer…still got a ways to go but loving the ride so far…happy OLN everyone
Wonderful intro, Claudia.
I’ve only just been able to check dVerse and my own blog. Thanks for your comments, everyone. I was a little confused by so many telling me my poem blinked. I had no clue what you were talking about because I didn’t see it. Then I figured out the problem.
My original copy had the word BLINK enclosed in these, “”, which are apparently HTML command marks. They told the copy to “blink.” So it did. That’s just so Hesch, eh?
I’ve since removed them. (I hope.) Thanks, again!
Hey, lady…great poem, great post. It makes sense that this is your fave; many of your poems have the same feel (telling/narrative) as this fine piece. Dang, I’m quite curious as to the poet to whom he speaks if it wasn’t Plath… As for me, had a bit of rant hit me before sleep last night…seems perfect fit for this weeks OLN, cheers ~
Maybe we could use Joe’s new html code for a blinking neon light in the pub window. =) A joy to drop back in after a bit too much travelling. Cheers and thanks for your time Claudia!
haha… a blinking neon light in the pub window sounds like a great idea..
good morning… just getting up.. need a coffee and a shower and then will be around in a bit to read what the overnight crowd brought..
good morning lady…go get some coffee cause there is good stuff you dont want to miss…smiles.
A very moving poem you shared here, Claudia. I can see how you had the reaction that you did although I believe it went very deep to a personal place within you–that I cannot see. I linked a little something… thanks for being here.
Sorry I’ve been away. Seven-day workweeks will do that occasionally. I’ve submitted a compact one this time, one that’s taken a lot of fine-tuning time for some reason… thanks, Claudia, for hosting the opportunity!
smiles.. very welcome.. will get to yours in the evening.. off to work now.. going to take my saxophone with me to my workplace as we’re doing another band rehearsal jam session in the cellar during lunch break… practicing for the company christmas part on friday.. smiles… so be back in the late evening to read some more of your entries.. have a great day all..!!
Hi, you write well Claudia. Thanks for sharing that touching poem.
I am a new entrant here and feel good to be part of this community. I have linked my poem.
warm welcome Hema… hope you enjoy the place.. look around..meet the people and if you have a question…just shout..there’s always someone behind the bar, ready for a chat.. smiles
I’ve never read o Bukowski poem before. I dig it!
Finally made it to the pub! I decided to attempt another Pantoum because I really enjoyed creating the last one. Hope you enjoy it. I’m off to read everyone’s work.
Claudia, in more ways than this poem moved me, touched me to tears. i read poetry and like to feel it, re-read it from a different place and also see the ticking of the speaker in the poem…
thank you for introducing Bukowski like this to me and opening your heart and mind
i’ve linked a poem i wrote last week (you read it already…) and i am looking forward to dipping my feet in the depth of others.
~deb
yes.. i know what you mean with wanting to feel the poetry you read ..great to see you in the pub debbie..
I always enjoy OLN in the pub. Every time, a great array of poems to read and comment on and a chance to share offerings with your peers.
Have it 😉
Ok, Got my submission in… this time its about dreams… inspired my some protagonists of Secessionist Movement out Vienna, Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele…
Look forward to your comments and thoughts on the same…

With Christmas coming the days are busy, but here I am again, sharing one of my poems and wishing everyone Happy Christmas season! Thank you to Claudia for hosting the event!
happy christmas season to you as well..
I have always loved Bukowski…and Claudia, you have that same way of hitting us with the unexpected line–usually something raw and beautiful–that propels your work into a dimension far above the ordinary.
thanks tim.. still smiling at your comment over at my place..smiles
Running in late, but at least I’m here!
Claudia, thanks for hosting and sharing the poem above by Bukowski. I had not read this before. Something very touching in his words–left me with goosebumps. Thank you.
my mom always says.. better late than never.. welcome ginny.. and believe it or not..i’m still getting gossebumps when reading this poem..even though i’ve read it already a hundred times..
Charles Bukowski’s poem was awesome, Claudia. Thanks for sharing it!
and I loved this quote too: “An intellectual says a simple thing in a hard way. An artist says a hard thing in a simple way.”
Great hosting 🙂
I most likely won’t find the time to post this week, but I’m gonna try and get some reading in!
Hi Claudia, things are sadly deteriorating here. We’ve spent last three days with doctors and things are quite difficult. I apologize to all for my absence, but I know all you kind people realize at this time it can’t be helped. I miss reading and commenting, but I am needed elsewhere right now. Thanks all my friends for all you do!
oh gay..sorry to hear this.. of course we understand… hope it’s going to get better soon..hugs and prayers your way
This poem shook me by the shoulders out of a stupor of unfeeling. What a pulsating and burning work. No wonder it is you favourite Claudia – your homage to it is clear in many of your own writings 🙂
thanks louise.. yeah it is pulsating.. think i gonna read it again now after the pub doors are closed and everything gets quiet.. smiles
ok folks..closing the openlinknights gates for this week… thanks for bringing your poetry along – and looking forward to seeing you in a few hours for FormForAll with the always wonderful Gay Cannon..
