Good afternoon/evening, everyone.  Mary here with a new prompt for Poetics.  The prompt today is NEWS. What is new with you? Do you have any news?   We all have some kind of news in our lives, don’t we?  And sometime we want a chance to share it.  So one option for this prompt is…….share some personal news in a poem!  Smiles.

But apart from personal news, we are all affected by world news.  The Ebola crisis, ISIS, the Nigerian school girls, attacks in Baghdad leave a number of people dead, demonstrations in Hong Kong, elections in each country, etc.  Then there is state news and local news that affects each person.  There are elections here next month, debates taking place.  Candidates are actively presenting their points of view. We all probably watch or listen to news stories on radio or television or read articles about them on newspapers or on places like Facebook.

I know we have poets here from many countries, and I am looking forward to reading some poems about the news that especially affects your country or locality, if you are moved to write about that.

If you need more inspiration, think about past news events.  The sinking of the Titanic, the destruction of the Challenger, the coming down of the Berlin Wall, the first man on the moon, Mohandas Gandhi leads nonviolent reform movement in India, scientists clone sheep in Great Britain, Israel achieves statehood, etc.  Write the past event as ‘news’ in poetry form perhaps.

Take a look at The New Verse News. It’s a blog that has poems on current events and topical issues.  Really, this is an excellent blog.  I have put it into my Feedly News Feed to follow it.  I hope you will take a look at it too!

Check out Tony Hoagland’s poem I Have News for You.

Here is yet another:  Howard Nemerov’s Space Shuttle Poems.

In summation, write a poem about NEWS of any type.  From your own personal news you want to share to local, national, international, past, or present news!  Looking forward to reading YOUR news!

What to do after you have written:

• Post your poem to your blog

• Add a link to your poem via the ‘Mr Linky’ below

• Read and comment on other people’s work to let them know it’s being read

• Share via your favorite social media platforms

• Above all- have fun!
