De Jackson here, aka WhimsyGizmo. It’s time again for that pithy, prestigious little nugget of poem goodness we here at dVerse call the Quadrille: a poem of precisely 44 words, including one word we provide.
Here in my hemisphere, it’s summer. And here in Southern Nevada, that means extreme temperatures, hibernating in the air conditioning, and waiting for early October, when things finally cool down some. And getting out of Dodge as often and for as long as possible. For us this summer, it meant a couple of amazing trips: to France (plus Geneva and London) to visit our daughter who was studying abroad, and to the Pacific Northwest and Lake Tahoe. For me, this right here is the essence of summer…

Today, I’d like to you to ponder the secrets of summer, and use some form of the word in your 44-word poem.

Peruse more summer poems here: https://poets.org/poems-summer
And then, of course, there’s this summer sonnet by The Bard:

Summer can be a verb. As in, (**insert slightly snooty voice here**): “dah-ling, our family summers in the Hamptons, of course.” Summersault, summery, summerset, summer song. Write about the Summer Olympics™. Your dream summer house. Your summer vacation. Or summer-ize your thoughts with a full-tilt tribute to good ol’ summertime.
However you choose to use it, just be sure your poem is exactly 44 words long, and includes some form of the word summer.
Before you get started, sing along with Olaf:
New to the Q? Here’s what to do:
Pen a poem of precisely 44 words, post it to your own blog, and link up using the Mr. Linky below. Then spend a few hours of your summer day breezing through the poems others have posted.
I’ll leave you with a small summer playlist:

And hey, in the comments below, tell us about your summer adventures!

Greetings, my amazing poeming friends! How’s your summer going? Tell me about your travels, or your peaceful mornings at home, or your upcoming awesome adventures!
I’m making Tequila Sunrises and Sunsets today, both virgin and otherwise. And serving summer sausage, cheese, and crackers. Happy poeming!
I love that header, De: Summertime, and the Poeming is Easy. Our summer is still very mixed, one day very hot and the next dull and overcast, raining, even a thunderstorm or two, I’m looking forward to reading all the summer poems.
Hot as all Hades here, Kim. In fact, we’ve broken records this month like crazy. Thankful to have been able to be out of town for the majority of it, and hide-bernating now, in my air-conditioned house. 😉
Hi De – lovely prompt though the challenge was to avoid the clichés
Here in the UK it has been cool much of the time though the barometer is on the rise for the foreseeable future – I’ve a birthday on Wednesday and that at least is something to celebrate for me
Happy Happy Birthday, Laura! We got to spend just a couple of days in London, in June. So so lovely. We fell in love. Our next international trip will include London and Scotland, we hope!
Today is my younger son’s birthday.🤭 Happy early birthday on Wednesday, Laura!🦁
Happy Birthday to your boy, Melissa!
Thanks, De!🥳
Hi De! Great prompt.
Though to be honest, summer was hell here. We are now experiencing monsoon. So some respite from heat.
One tequila sunset for me before I hit the pillow. 😉
Coming right up! Cheers!
Cheers!
Hi De. Thank you hosting the fun prompt word, summer. Tequila sunrise with cheese and crackers are yummy. Love the sample poems in your poem too.
Thanks, Grace. Happy poeming!
Thanks for the prompt! If you can’t access Medium (Mister Linky), my quadrille is also available at:

Hi, Nolcha. I can read your poem, but cannot comment. I especially love this:
“I breathe ocean breezes
and tidepools”
…which is so me, I could cry.
If you find yourself not getting comments/likes, it might be the substack format. Glad you linked up, though, however you can!
Thanks! I haven’t found anything yet that isn’t a pain in the butt to sign up for or comment. I’m open to suggestions.
I’m the least techie person I know, and just today have run into a TON of issues on my own (WordPress) blog, so perhaps I’m not the best help. 😉 And as you probably saw, I did figure out how to log in and comment at your site.
WordPress makes my eyes roll around. Thanks for figuring out how to log in and comment!

Thanks for the prompt, De! Looking forward to reading others’ meditations on summer 🙂
Happy you’re here! Cheers!
Thank you for hosting De. Timely prompt, but I am having a hard time stirring up summertime feelings in the midst of the current social chaos — so I went in a slightly different direction. That said, have a happy summer everyone. 🙂✌🏼🫶🏼
Hi Rob! I’m having trouble commenting on your blog, never had a problem before, so I’m posting my comment here: The rhythm and rhyme of your quadrille is like a magic chant, Rob, while the message is so down to earth. Resonating.
Heading over soon, Rob! Cheers!
Thank you for a hosting, De. Summer is a lovely prompt word. 🙂
Thanks, Kitty! Happy poeming!
Oooh I can’t resist a good quadrille challenge! Thank you for the propmps, resources, and the reminder of the 1001 ways of resting into leisure.
I’m sipping tepid tea and working out a rail journey involving multiple changes over sevseal days, and hoping for cool breezes in August as I gaze out of trains crossing borders between Scotland, England and Wales.
Chilled camomile tea and lightly dressed slad leaves, with the odd sweet peppery radish…
Ooooo. Sounds AMAZING! We caught the international travel bug this past June (France, London, Geneva), and are now dreaming of doing Scotland and London this spring.
sweet dreams (of joyful, horizon stretching travel) to you, De!
Kathy
Hello. Yes, for some reason WP changed things again and I had trouble finding my way, but managed eventually.
Thank you for the prompt.
WordPress makes me wanna pull my hair out. It now takes me like 6 clicks to “write” and “publish” a new poem on my blog, when it used to be easy. Argh. So happy you found your way. Always happy to see you here!
I’m always happy to be here, once I get here. Life outside the Pub is pretty hectic, but I shall try to read all the summer poems.
Many thanks De, there’s something about summer! 🙂
My pleasure, Paul! Happy poeming!
De, I am late to the game but I still want to play. Thanks for the prompt that led me back to some fun childhood memories when life was simpler. May we all find ways to add some play to our lives.
Happy to see you, Ali! The Q is open all week, so post away!
Hey de Jackson, thanks for the summery prompt! 🙏😁 Just posted the link to my contribution over at Mr. Linky there.
Heading over now, Ken. Good to see you here!
Good to be here! 🙏😁😊
Hi De! Thanks for hosting. I guess the poeming /is/ easy because I wrote my “summer” poem in one go, eXACTly on target.
Nicely done, Xan! Can’t wait to read it!
