Hello all, today I host the last Prosery of this year, and as usual it is not easy to find the right poem (and poet). and thinking a little I thought I should either find an obscure Swedish poet who is totally new to you…. or maybe, maybe why not one of the most well-known pop artists currently.
I think you all have heard about Taylor Swift. Not one of my favorite artists, but if I understand correctly it is actually less the music than the lyrics that her fans love the most. She has been used at universities, where her poetry and devices are compared to Shakespeare and Sylvia Plath. See for instance this article from the Guardian. Not really sure about this myself… but her lyrics are strong and include a lot of storytelling so I think it would be suitable to inspire your prose.
Looking a little bit through her lyrics I did not choose one from her latest record even if its name is “The Tortured Poets Department” (which could almost be a name for a poetry site like ours).
Instead I found this line
“You drew stars around my scars”
from the song Cardigan taken from her record Folklore.
You can choose if you want to watch her video before, but it might be a good idea to do it only after you have written your prose, and here it goes:
You should write a piece of prose including the given line which you may punctuate or break up if you want, but every word in the same order has to be included in a piece of prose (fiction or non-fiction) of maximum 144 word (or if you want to challenge yourself exactly 144 words).
When you have written your prose/story, post it to your blog, link back to dVerse, enter the link to your blog-post to Mr Linky below and join me and the others reading and commenting on the other stories. It’s a blast actually so remember having fun.
If you have anything else to share like a specific memory (maybe you even managed to get tickets to one of her concerts) share in the comment section below.
Let’s have fun and tell each other stories.
Hello guys, today I offer upp some light and sweet stuff… how about some spongecake soaked in lemon syrup with your choice of coffee or tea? Of course we have all the usual bar-stuff as well, but please join me and tell me what you think about pop-song lyrics..
I would love some spongecake and coffee, Björn! As for pop lyrics, my response is (tongue-in-cheek): Who’s Afraid of Taylor Swift? She’s as much a phenomenon as the Beatles were in their day.
And I guess that her lyrics talks to the young today, much like Beatles talked to youth of the past.
Or Bob Dylan. I wonder, will she get a Nobel Prize for literature like him one day?!
I thought about doing Bob Dylan, but that is truly poetry (or Leonard Cohen for that matter)
Hello Bjorn and All. TayTay is someone whose music I am not at all familiar with, but I do realize she is a worldwide phenomena. Wasn’t she in Stockholm not all that long ago? She feels like a force for good, and that’s what matters to me. Thank you for sharing one of her lyrics. It inspired me to a place that surprised me. Spongecake soaked in lemon syrup is new to me but I’ll give it a try. A cup of hot peppermint rooibos tea with a splash of Baileys.
She was in Stockholm not that long ago, and it was a lot of people travelling here to see her, it seems to me that she touches fans more by her lyrics than be her song, which I really find interesting… but when I read them I can see that each of them is storytelling which is maybe why…
Bjorn, sometimes I wonder if we will ever run out of narratives. I’m glad so many feel comforted/heard/validated by hers.
I’m bellied up to the bar. Have a cigar on me!
We have a patio where smokins allowed 🙂
🎶But I knew you
Dancin’ in your Levis
Drunk under a streetlight, I🎶
I don’t know if I consider myself a Swiftie, but I do like Taylor Swift. My daughter says she is (a Swiftie).😆
Of course she is talented, but most likely her stories are very far from my stories… but I really wanted to try this.
Thanks for the insight into Taylor Swift. I was oblivious to her poetic spirit. Good to have a singer songwriter doing so well. There might be hope for us ‘tortured’ poets!
Of course, we all have stories to tell…
Thank you for hosting Björn. Gonna pass. I will check back tomorrow my friend.
Ok… sorry for you passing, but nice to see you here Rob
Hi Bjorn, thanks for hosting! I think I wrote a bit of fantasy or blue prosery.
Sounds exciting
Good evening, Proserists! Thank you for the inspiring prompt, Bjorn.
I’ll take my usual Burgundy, when you get the chance. 😉
We always have Burgundy for you Frank.
This was fun to do! Thanks for the prompt
My pleasure, happy to provide inspiration.
Thanks for hosting, Bjorn. This is an interesting line. 🙂
I liked it too
I love this prompt, definitely going to have to try my hand at it. Will try to post tomorrow!
Look forward to it… the prompt is open until saturday
Just posted and added the link as stated. Hope I did it all right haha.
I don’t mind me a little Swift, nice choice Bjorn and a museful prompt.
Thank you… it is good to widen your inspiration every now and then
Thanks again for the prompt! Always a pleasure.
Nice to have you here
Such a rich prompt, Bjorn, introducing me to Taylor Swift in a most engaging visual, tonal, textural way. Loved the video, our starlet embracing just the phantasy upon which I feed…
The challenge drew me in yesterday bedtime and kept me up to the tWitch-ing hour with my first naked draft.
Glad I didn’t read your chilling offering until now, just after posting my rather different one. It’s good to work in a vacuum I find, although it can suck the sleep out of me sometimes.
I agree that this is not the time for whine nor whisky, and I’ll happily settle for your home-made lemon drizzle cake and pale weak tea with only a dash of semi-skilled milk. Thank you for inviting us to the sweet pop party – how lyrical!
Late to this prompt. Will link up to the next OLN. Taylor Swift’s charitable work is remarkable. I know nothing of her music though and perhaps should visit her lyrics.
Thanks for the prompt Börn.
A bit late, but here’s my try 🙂
