Hello, dVerse Poets! Today is Haibun Monday.
In my part of the world, southern New Jersey, it’s spring. Our daffodils are in bloom, and the flowering trees are starting to burst into bloom, too. People writing haibun and haiku here, might allude to spring in their poem. For those new to the form, let me explain further.
The Japanese poet Bashō popularized haibun in the sixteenth century, though the form existed before. A haibun typically consists of a few brief paragraphs of prose– usually short, evocative paragraphs written in the present tense. Most often, haibun include non-fictional/autobiographical paragraphs complemented with a haiku. The haiku should not directly repeat what the prose stated. Traditionally, it has a nature or seasonal reference, but yours do not have to for this prompt. Haiku can follow the traditional 5-7-5 syllable form or short-long-short. Ideally, a haibun should be more than observations; they should evoke some sort of feeling.
I found this essay on writing haibun, which you may want to look at.

Here’s a haibun called “Time Traveler’s Haibun: 1989” by Maureen Thorson. The Poetry Foundation link includes Thorson reading of her poem.

Your haibun does not have to resemble this one, but for this prompt, I’m asking you to do some time traveling of your own. You may write about your own past, imagine your own future, invent an entirely fictional time-travel tale, or do something in-between.
Optional
I’m adding some paint chip names to use like random words. You may use them for inspiration, include the words in your poem, or just ignore them! It’s totally optional. Sometimes reading a word or phrase is helpful to start the poetic flow.
Big Dipper, Black Magic, Caviar, Cruising, Danube, Dew Drop, Full Bloom, Fresh water, Golden Fleece, Greek Villa, Grasshopper, Golden Plumeria, Homburg, Landmark, Nebulous White, Nightwatch, Nocturne, Only Natural, Raucous Orange, Repose, Ripe Berry, Shamrock, Storm Warning, Wall Street, Wave Crest
Remember your haibun should include a short prose piece with a haiku.
**Watch for an exciting announcement from dVerse coming very soon!**
If you’re new to dVerse, here’s what to do:
*Write your haibun according to the prompt
*Post it on your blog
*Add the link for your blog post to Mr. Linky below
*Read and comment on others’ poems
Good evening poets and thank you Merril for hosting. Many of us have a busy month of NaPoWriMo ahead of us, but I think we have plenty of practice. I really enjoyed Thorson’s ‘Time Traveler’s Haibun’ and I like the paint chip names. A ginger beer would go down well today, please.
April is always a busy poetry month, Kim. I forgot about the early bird NaPoWriMo today. Here’s your ginger beer!
Thank you, Merril!
You’re welcome, Kim!
Hello, Everyone! Welcome to Haibun Monday!
Excitement is building in the pub as we get ready to celebrate the 15th Anniversary of dVerse! dVerse will be publishing an anthology, and all dVerse poets are eligible to submit. Please note there is a new tab at the top left of this site for the anthology. It includes all the information.
Now as far as today, I’m ready to read your time-traveling haibun. We have all sorts of food and beverages available. Enjoy something from the past–or the future, if you dare!
How exciting! Thank you the announcement!!!
You’re welcome, Grace! It is exciting!
Hello all… so nice to see the announcement of the anthology…. I would love to travel back in time, but it is so hard as I feel tethered to a terrible present.
I understand, Björn!
Thank you for the prompt, Merril
Hi Robbie, you’re welcome! I can’t wait to see what you come up with!😊
We had a smattering of snow today … unacceptable! Guess a warm brandy would cheer me up. Thanks for the challenge, Merril.
Go away, snow! Warm brandy coming right up, Helen!
A great post, Merril. Thank you for hosting this evening. We are in the middle of that severe storm front that has moved across the country. So far just some wind and a little rain. More to come this evening. Hoping it washes all the spring pollen down the drain!
I will have a hot chocolate and some chocolate chip cookies!!
Thank you, Dwight. We’re supposed to get the storms, too. I hope they’re not too severe where you are or here.
A chocolate lover like me! You can never have too much!😋
You are welcome, Merril. You are right!
Well, I really messed up and posted my editing page instead of the right one. Please delete and I will repost the right one!
Oh, I was wondering what happened! The link said I didn’t have access, and the second one said there’s no page there.
Dump them both, thank you. I will try again.
I found your post and added it.
Ok. I’ll delete mine. 😂
Thank you. The last one was correct!

I see I should have read your prompt a little more closely. I did not include time travel in my haibun. I guess I got carried away with my beautiful hawk.
You were writing about what you saw earlier in the day–close enough. 😉
:>) Thank you, Merril!
It’s been a few weeks since I’ve played at the Pub (or anywhere). It’s good to be here. Thank you for the prompt.
My daffodils had just begun to poke through the soggy ground when we got more snow, but it and the lake ice are softening and going fast.
Thank you for joining us! I’m happy for you that the snow is melting!
Hello! That is exciting news about the anthology. I have linked up but, it is late so I will be back in the morning. Sweet dreams Dear Poets!
Thank you for linking up. I go to bed early, but I will be by in a few minutes to read!
Hi Merril, thank you for this delightful and creative Haibun prompt, something to chew on. 🙂
Hi Paul, I’m so pleased you enjoyed the prompt! 😊
Thank you so much for the prompt! I have a lot of memories lately. Here’s my try: https://wrestlingwordblog.wordpress.com/2025/04/02/sorting-through/
