To hurt is to steal
— Bono and U2, from “Mysterious Ways”
on Achtung Baby
Greetings to All Poet Pubsters on this beautiful June day. Lisa here, serving up a Prosery prompt, goodies, and liquid refreshments. Prosery is where you write a prose story instead of a poem, using a given line of poetry (or song lyric) to inspire you. Word limit is 144 words, not including title, and the given line must be used without adding or taking away any words in between. Punctuation may be changed.
Taking Björn’s lead of using a song lyric as inspiration, I immediately turned to Bono, main writer and lead singer of the Irish Band U2. Bono is a man who knows his way around a potent song lyric. From U2’s seventh studio album, Achtung Baby, per wikipedia, “it was their first album in three years and their first comprising entirely new material in over four years.”
“Mysterious Ways” is the eighth of twelve tracks. It’s not difficult to see what the other line in the paired couplet, “to touch is to heal,” means, but it is the line given today, “to hurt is to steal” that most intrigues me. I am very interested in seeing where you take it in your story.
Here’s how to take part in the Prosery Prompt:
• Write a piece of flash fiction or other prose up of up to or exactly 144 words, including the given line from the poem.
• Post your Prosery piece on your blog and link back to this post.
• Place the link to your actual post (not your blog url) on the Mister Linky page.
• Don’t forget to check the little box to accept use/privacy policy.
• Please visit other blogs and comment on their posts – reciprocation is the life of this challenge!

The Pub Is Open!
Good evening poets, and thank you for hosting, Lisa. Do you have a non-alcoholic cocktail, please, and some mixed nuts? I went light-hearted with my prosery piece, trying to cheer myself up.
Welcome, Kim, and my pleasure on hosting. Lately I’ve been drinking OJ, cranberry juice, and a blackberry flavored soda water. I’ll pour 2, one for you and one for me. Cheers!
And a tasty bowl of mixed nuts. Heading to poetry trail now. Cheering up sounds like just the ticket.
Thank you, Lisa!
You are Welcome.
I went DARK, so I’m looking forward to reading yours, Kim, to cheer myself up. 😊
I’m not long up and will be over to read and comment shortly.
Hello, the hurt could made me think… and yes it will be melancholic alas. I need something to cheer me up.
Welcome, Bjorn. Sometimes we have to trot out the melancholy instead of using all that energy to keep it safely stuffed. Like Kim said the other day, talking about it can help ease the pain.
My game is over. Coffee, please!
Welcome, Nolcha. How would you like your coffee??
Thanks so much Li…staying with a previous theme somehow, enjoying in some starnge way, and staying off alcohol, so a nice dark beer served in a teapot, cunningly disguised please …
Welcome, Ain. Ooh I will teaify the beer and serve it to you in a cup. Cheers!
LOL!
i’m just home after a weekend away, feeling chilled in the rain-drenched evening, so a hot version of the cheery mix you’ve shared with Kim would be great, if you have any dregs in the jug. Cheers, mes cheries!
Welcome, Kathy! :::pouring the cheery mix into a mug and nuking it::: Cheers!
Going to hit the 90s today in Bend Oregon …. something tall and cool … maybe a Long Island iced tea? This was a great challenge, I love U2 and Bono!!!
Welcome, Helen.
Here’s a tall frosted glass of Long Island iced tea for you. Cheers! Hope it quenches your thirst in that kind of heat. 90s!? Glad you like the challenge and Bono & The Boys 🙂 I saw Bono on Kimmel show last week, talking about his new movie that was made based on his memoir. Can’t wait to see it!
Hi Lisa, thank you for hosting. I am on the road traveling this week. I have never listened to U2s music, but the line is applicable in many ways. I cannot promise but will see if I can conjure up something. A chocolate milk shake with a cherry on top would be great!
Welcome, Dwight! Hope you are enjoying your road trip. U2 falls in my top 10 of all time for bands and hope you get a chance to hear this tune or any other tune of theirs. Would love it if you could learn one of their songs and play it. Safe travels, my friend. One chocolate milk shake with a cherry on top coming right up. Cheers!
p.s. my pleasure on hosting.
Thanks, Lisa. I love your imagination… I will stick to writing and milkshakes!! :>)
You’re welcome. 🙂
I am feeling melancholy tonight so goes my prose.
Welcome, Truedessa. I just read your story and and felt your presence in it.
Same!
I’ve been on a bit of a hiatus because my life is too big for me sometimes, but tonight, I was home early from a work dinner, saw the prompt, and whipped something out that was scratching at the door already, wanted to be voiced. I love dVerse so much for the prompts and permission to be authentic, whether talented or not. So could I please have a glass of bubbly? I’m feeling more appreciative than sparkly, but you can never go wrong with bubbly. #cheerstoallyall
Welcome, Dear Kim ❤ So happy things converged in a way that you are here today and sharing of your beautiful soul. A tall glass of bubbly coming right up. Cheers!

Hi, Lisa, thanks for hosting. Great prompt!
Welcome, Jay! My pleasure on hosting. Thanks so much. Just read your poem a bit ago. I can see you were inspired.
Thank you for this Li, the prompt drew me along … a double whiskey would go well with the toil 🙂
Welcome, Paul. My pleasure and see that indeed it did draw you along 🙂 Pouring two double whiskeys, one for you and one for me. Cheers!
😀
nice prompt!
Welcome, Dawn! Thank you very much. Just read your empowering story and commented.
Thanks. Appreciate the feedback Li!!!
hi Li. I’ll take a dose of “let’s turn this hurt into hope” on the rocks please, with a serving of nuts. I took an upbeat take to your prompt—thanks for hosting!!! http://createdbydeesign.com/2025/06/12/to-hurt-is-to-steal-dawn-minott/
