ANNOUNCEMENT
Call for Poetry Submissions: Krisis: Poetry at the Crossroads (Working Title)
In celebration of our 15th anniversary in 2026, dVerse Poets Pub invites poets from around the globe to contribute to our upcoming anthology, Krisis: Poetry at the Crossroads. Rooted in the Greek word krisis, meaning a pivotal decision point, we seek poems that explore moments of transformation, choice, and change.
Submission Period: April 1, 2025 – June 30, 2025
More information here. (There is a tab at the top left of the dVerse page, as well.)
Hello, dVerse Poets! We’re getting close to the final date to submit to the anthology. With that in mind, this prompt today may give you another poem to submit, should you choose to do so.
Recently, there was a poetry prompt on BlueSky on “defeat.” I’ve been thinking about how close the line sometimes is between triumph or victory and defeat. A war may turn on a battle. One side wins, and the other side is defeated. In a sports event, one side usually wins, and one side loses; similarly, this occurs in elections, and in things such as getting a job, or a grant. In love, someone might choose one partner over another. I also thought of how, sometimes one is defeated, but that turns out for the best. Perhaps you didn’t get a job you really wanted, but then you ended up with one you liked much more. Perhaps you heard later that the person you thought you loved turned out to be a horrible person.
From the explanation of the theme: “Krisis is the space between what was and what will be.”
For example, Emily Dickinson’s poem, “Success is counted sweetest”
Maya Angelou, “Still I Rise”
And Maggie Smith’s “Good Bones”
If you’d like an ekphrastic option, consider this painting by Peter Paul Rubens, “The Fall of Icarus” (1636). I know the story of Icarus has become almost a cliché but imagine the moments before he fell. Try to find a fresh approach to the story.

Second Announcement:
Thursday, June 19th is the final Open Link Night before the dVerse Summer Break. On open link nights, you may share one poem on any theme, BUT for this time only, if you are considering submitting them to the anthology, you may post up to three poems. There is also an opportunity to join other dVerse poets in a live event on Saturday, June 21 at 10:00 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time (New York Time). The GOOGLE MEET link will be posted on the dVerse site.
So, today’s prompt is to write about that thin line between triumph and defeat, or if you’d like, you may focus on one or the other. You may respond to the poetic examples or the painting, as well.
New to dVerse? Here’s how to join in:
- Write a poem in response to the challenge.
- Post your poem on your blog and link back to this post.
- Enter your name and the link to your post by clicking Mr. Linky below (remember to check the little box to accept the use/privacy policy).
- Read and comment on your fellow poets’ work –- there’s so much to derive from reading each other’s writing: new inspiration, new ideas, new friends. Enjoy!
- Mr. Linky will remain open until 3pm EST on Thursday, June 19th.
Nice prompt, I scribbled down something quick…. just because triumph is so often connected to defeat. I don’t mind having something easy like a cup of herbal tea tonight.
Thank you, Björn. We have an assortment of herbal teas. I’ll let you pick. I like lemon-ginger.
Sounds divine.
Hello, Everyone! I can’t wait to read your poems!
The Poets’ Pub is fully stocked with all sorts of food and drink. We’re featuring summery fresh lemonade and strawberry shortcake, or perhaps you’d like a spritzer and some cheese.
Good evening poetry folk and thank you for hosting with a flexible prompt, Merril. I would love some lemonade and strawberry shortcake – I’m allowed because it’s virtual!
Hi, Kim! Enjoy the lemonade and strawberry shortcake! 😋
Hi Merril. Great prompt. I wouldn’t mind a glass of fresh lemonade before I hit the bed. 😊
Hi Punam! Coming right up!
Thanks, Merril.
You’re welcome, Punam!
Hello Merril and all!
Strawberry shortcake for me please 😀 Looking forward to reading everyone’s entries 🩷🩷
Hi Sanaa! Here’s a bowl of strawberry shortcake with the last of the New Jersey strawberries. 🍓💙
Oops.. I said on my blog I’d done 3 quatrains instead of quadrilles, but they really are quadrilles. Now changed.
Hi! I will be right over to read. Thank you!
I think you meant this comment to go with yesterday’s prompt, Judy.
Greetings! I’ve been catching up on my favorite series “Outlander” which is filled with triumphs and defeats. Certain my poem will reflect what I cannot seem to get out of my brain. LOL Lemonade for me, please.
Hahaha, Helen. Here’s a cold lemonade.
Triumph and defeat are interesting terms for poets 🙂 Enjoyed the prompt Merril thank you.
Thank you, Paul. I’m so pleased you enjoyed the prompt!
I’m late because my husband had wrist surgery yesterday, and I was gone all day.
Icarus will never fly again. What can I get from behind the bar to mourn his death?
No need to explain. As long as the prompt is open, you’re not late! I hope your husband is doing OK.
Hmmm-I Googled it: how about this?
“Flight of Icarus: Stoli Citrus & Orange Vodka, Aperol, Sweet Vermouth, Lemon Juice, Sage”
Thanks for this prompt Merril, it has been fermenting in my mind until this morning and now makes me wonder if I made the right submissions to Krisis at the Crossroad.
I am at work now for the last 0.5 of my 2.5 days but I could use a fresh coffee please…
Hi Andrew, I just put on a fresh pot of coffee, so here you go. I haven’t read the submissions, but I’ll be over to read your response to the prompt in a few minutes.
Why has the Mr Linky expired? 🙂
That’s rather harsh for those of us in the UK…. 🙂
Its only 8:30pm on Thursday 19th June – the first chance I’ve had of writing for the prompt.
Silly me – found OLN link. Blame my thyrod issues…..
Sorry, Kim. Usually the Poetics link is only open till the Thursday prompt, and you can always post it on OLN. I assume you did that. 😊
Yup – I did!
😊
Interesting, interesting. I will have an Iced Sangria. Hot here. I have a new poem posted. Hopefully, I will find the Energy to submit it. Do all the poems in Krisis need to be about this prompt?
Hi. The poems do not have to be about triumph and/or defeat, but they have to fit the Krisis theme and be posted on your blog in response to dVerse. The Open Link Night link from last Thursday is still open until the end of this week.
