Hello there, dVerse Poets! It’s mid-October, and as a variation on autumnal themes, let’s turn to the supernatural and have some fun! 👻
Several years ago, Paul Brookes, hosted a month-long ekphrastic “Folktober” challenge. One day, he featured three images of the headless horseman from various parts of the world. It’s fascinating to me that there are legends of headless ghosts or horsemen in various times all over the globe.
Today, I ask you to write a poem about some version of the headless horseman. It’s your chance to escape reality. Base your poem on one of the folktales or create your own tale or urban legend. Perhaps your creation rides a camel, a donkey, or a motorcycle. Why is your creation without a head? Where might someone see this creature? What does he or she do? Make it scary, make it funny, make it lighthearted, or make it full of deeper meaning.
Here are some images that might help you. You can also check out the images on Paul’s page.

Need more inspiration? What about the Romantic ballad “The Highwayman?” Although the ghost has a head, he does ride a horse.
Hold on to your heads! I can’t wait to read your poems.

Hello, dVerse poets! Welcome! The pub is open and stocked. We have all sorts of autumnal treats, if you’re in the mood–pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting, apple cider, and I think some of Dora’s pecans in some double chocolate cookies. I can’t wait to read your poems!
Hello Merril and all!
Loved the prompt 😀 pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting for me please!
Happy Tuesday 💙💙
Hi Sanaa. I cut you a big slice! Happy Tuesday! 💙
I really feel like apple cider tonight… enjoyed writing a ghost story for tonight… i hope to be scared by the poems tonight.
Apple cider for you, Björn. I will be over in a few minutes. Ooooo, I’m hoping to be scared, too!
Hi Merril,
Thank you for hosting. I would LOVE me some double-chocolate cookie with pecans and apple cider, Merril! And thanks for the chance to write to this fun prompt which I went all Coleridge-esque on! 🙂
Hi Dora, I’m going to join you with those cookies. Yum! And all Coleridge-esque? How can I resist?!
Thanks Merril!
You’re welcome, Dora!
Great fun Merril 😄
Thank you, Ange! 😊
The tale of the Headless Horseman has always been a Halloween classic. So, I decided to play along.
Yay! I’m so pleased you did!
Hi everyone! Merril, this is a clever prompt! I went a bit off-grid with my poem, but had fun writing it. A photo I snapped back in 2016 was my inspiration.
Hi Helen, I’ll be over to read in a few minutes. Going off-grid is perfect!
I enjoyed writing for the prompt, thanks, Merril!
I’m so pleased you did, Jay!
