Just come and sit in to listen. We’re a friendly bunch! A Google Meet link will be provided on our Thursday, October 23rd OLN prompt.

Okay, let’s get started! It is not just a Monday, it is the sparkling Quadrille writing Monday! Most of you have heard about Diwali which is celebrated across India with fun, fervour and faith in varying degrees. When I was a child, what excited me most about Diwali was the new clothes I would get and the sparklers that I was allowed to light. Of all the firecrackers, those were my favourite. They outsparkle all other noisy and sky shot firecrackers for the simple joy that they bring.

We don’t know how and when bursting firecrackers on Diwali became a tradition, but it is a tradition we all grew up with. Though these past few years, due to pollution,  there has been a blanket ban on bursting firecrackers in Delhi. That in no way dampens our spirits at all! We have earthen lamps, candles and sparkling led lights to brighten our Diwali, for after all “Deepavali” or Diwali, as the name suggests is the festival of “string of lamps”.

I am sure you must have guessed, the prompt for today is sparklers. Let it be the spark to ignite your imagination. Give us a sparkling verse of 44 words only. You could wax eloquence about your car’s  sparkplug or a sparkly dress you own (or covet). Use any form of the given word and write us a poem of exact 44 words (not including the title).

I am sharing a few poems that may provide the added spark.

Here be Monsters by MKF

“Inside you’re green

And your claws are large.

Your sweet voice is gone,

Becoming the sound of a battle charge.

So don’t light a match,

We don’t even need a spark.

Just turn the lights off,

The truth comes out in the dark.”

Weak Love by Being Honest

“There will come a time when you get bored of me.

And I guess I’m waiting for that time,

Hoping it’s soon,

So that I can be sure your love is true or not…

Because if we still stay together,

Then maybe we’d be able to rekindle the spark,

But if we fall apart then and there —

At the first sight of boredom…

Then your love was never true,

It was as weak as I predicted!”

Sparklers by Barbara Crooker

“We’re writing our names with sizzles of light

to celebrate the fourth. I use the loops of cursive,

make a big B like the sloping hills on the west side

of the lake. The rest, little a, r, one small b,

spit and fizz as they scratch the night. On the side

of the shack where we bought them, a handmade sign:

Trailer Full of Sparkles Ahead, and I imagine crazy

chrysanthemums, wheels of fire, glitter bouncing

off metal walls.”
