Welcome to Poetics! My name is Brian Miller and I am co hosting today with the outstanding poet Gretchen Leary. Today is all about interactions and what better way to talk about interactions that to have the two of us each providing a prompt of sorts.
My prompt came to me a few weeks back when I wrote a poem about Mad Libs. I got this crazy idea that maybe we could create them in poetry. If you have no idea what Mad Libs are, it is a word game you play, usually with kids. You create a story by filling in the blanks, asking them to supply a verb or noun or adjective. They have no idea what the story is about so once the blanks are filled in you read it back…often with rather hilarious results.
Here is what I would like you to do today, and it is going to take some interaction. I want you to ask someone to give you 2 nouns, 3 verbs, 3 adjectives and 2 random words. Using that list, I them want you to write a poem.
Be sure to let us know the words you started with and maybe even the person you asked to give them to you.
And now for another kind of interaction, I will turn it over to Gretchen.
~~~~~
Sometimes I truly believe music makes the world go ’round. It affects our lives in so many ways and it is woven into so many of our memories. Sometimes just hearing that song again can spark so many emotions and set our muse to overdrive. Sometimes it’s the just the beat itself.
My name is Gretchen Leary, and I feel humbled to to be able to offer the prompt here. I’m not your typical pub tender. I’m not exactly sure how to make the glasses glow when polished or how to juggle the bottles, but I am here just the same.
My idea for a prompt is part of how I do most of my writing. What I ask is that you think really hard of a song that has inspired you in some way, think of the moment it locked inside of you forever, and write about that moment. Or, listen to that same song with a new mindset and see if it inspires something else inside of you.
Please be sure to give the artist themselves credit and link their website or video into your blog post to give them the respect we all want as artists.
So whether you bring classical, jazz, pop, funk, or… (You get the idea) to the pub tonight- I’m sure we’ll have a great poetic karaoke of sorts here at DVerse tonight.
~~~~~
Whichever prompt you choose, or even if you choose to do both, have fun interacting with others or with the music, then come on back and interact with us. If you are new, here is what you do:
- Write a poem to one of the two prompts and post it on your webpage
- Include a link to dverse so that people can follow you back here
- Click the Mr. Linky button below and enter your name and direct URL
- Here is where you will also see others that have linked in their work. Visit others, interact with them, let them know what worked, what you liked.
- Enjoy
On behalf of Gretchen and myself, we look forward to seeing you out on the trail.

Welcome, Gretchen. I’d gotten a head start on Brian’s fun prompt and saw after that you have one, too. Will try to use that one for Tuesday’s OLN. Brian, thanks so much. I love what happens with random words!

Hi Brian and Gretchen ~ Thanks for the poetic prompts ~ I used random words to concoct a dish as I sometimes write in the kitchen nook ~ As to music, sometimes I listen to artists, sometimes I don’t. I find though when I do listen to music, it changes my voice and rhythm ~
Wishing everyone a Happy Saturday ~
Grace
brian miller said:
hey grace…happy saturday to you….i find music helps me find rhythm and wax a bit lyrical…i was telling gretchen the other night it was not too long back we had a conversation in here about using music and not using music…
Gretchen Leary said:
Loved it Grace. 🙂
Kelvin S.M. said:
…good morning Grace… me, not too picky with songs & artists as long as it pleases my ear plus good lyrics then i surely would care to listen… smiles…

I cheated. A bit.
But nevertheless I worked hard on what came out of the cheat, so maybe I get forgiven.
brian miller said:
you are forgiven…and liquified gas is going to be worked into one of my poems very soon….smiles….

Wow, our amazement never ends hanging out at the Pub! For Brian I took 2 nouns-ferry, pepper; 3 verbs–stomp, infect, thrive; 3 adjectives-bare, pale, dynamic & 2 random words–gang, blues from my wife. For Gretchen I tackled Jazz with both hands. Thanks for this delicious prompt!
brian miller said:
jazz is so cool….as i said at your place…we just covered it in US History class…
Gretchen Leary said:
You did some serious magic with music & mad libs tonight!

Anyone want to give me 2 nouns, 3 verbs, 3 adjectives and 2 random words.. I can excange by giving to whoever want to have it:
noun: moat, bear
verb: invest, groan, publish
adjective: verdant, brittle, spherical
random: furbish, spider
Anyone for a trade?
brian miller said:
cheeseburger, crow
gasps, slides, tenderizes
slick, opaque, smelly (from my son)
knee, power
haha…ok did a quick ask around the house.
have at it.
smiles.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I got word custom from one of my tweeps so I might use that too.
brian miller said:
oh brittle bear
dance the verdant hills,
no longer groan within
your cave time is done
leave the spiders
to their corners, un-moat
your heart & publish
the next chapter
on this spherical spinning rock,
furbish it in bristled daisy heads,
a carpet of white
plucked petals
loves me, loves me not,
loves me…
each an invest-
ment in tomorrows
felicity.
brian miller said:
eighteen minutes…word list to poem…ha….woot!
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:

…wonderful collaboration of two wonderful poets i know for sure… first i honestly didn’t know ’bout the mad lib game so got confused a bit when you, Brian, provided it… is that an original from you Brian? i mean did you invent it?
..Gretchen, as always, nice to have your pressence here…and now hosting… many thanks for bringing up your music love to us… i find it hard to look for a particular song to use as inspiration so instead i tried to sound lyrical with my poem… actually, when i wrote mine i kind of thinking a bit the song ‘i wanna grow old with you’… haha… but my poem today ended up in separate ways… hihi…
..good morning… smiles…
brian miller said:
mad libs was a game we played as a kid…it comes in books you use to make stories….
Kelvin S.M. said:
..cool… nah, why me not aware of it? too bad i play wordgames if not on scrabbles i think too often on pc like in bookworm deluxe…ha…
Gretchen Leary said:
Loved it Kelvin! Mad libs are fun. I’m not great at them but when odd words are thrown together you’re in for a good laugh 🙂
Kelvin S.M. said:
.. yep… didn’t quite follow Brian’s instruction on Mad libs which is to ask someone give you words to use… instead went on the easy way by picling on some random poems & articles i read last night… your poem about the blankets really relates to me in some way or another… i actually to post a poem about some old toys left in the garret dusting & fading… but didn’t quite like the result so instead saved it for future editing… smiles…
Anders Woje Ellingsen said:
I love it! This prompt was lovely! As for the random words I asked God to help me, and by the hand of Google I found Creativity Tools where you can get a random word. The poem was written in minutes. And Schubert anointed it all with beautiful music in the background. Thank You Lord! And thank you to Brian and Gretchen, particularly Brian, for this lovely prompt!
brian miller said:

Gretchen Leary said:
What an incredible source of inspiration. I gotta check out that tool too! Thank-you!

thanks Gretchen, very much

Greetings to all in the pub. I passed on the Mad Lib component, Brian, as that kind of stymied me; and I went with the music component, Gretchen, as music is something that resonates with me too…. I was out for a while, am just getting in now to take a look at what other people have written. Hope you all have a good weekend!
