shadow heart (de jackson)
Keep your face always in the sunshine,
and shadows will fall behind you.
– Walt Whitman
Helloooo, poetic peeps. De here (aka WhimsyGizmo). It’s time again for the Q44, our Quadrille – when we ponder one word, and poetically transform it into 44. Today, I want you to write a poem of exactly 44 words (not counting your title), including the word shadow.
I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me,
And what can be the use of him is more than I can see.
He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head;
And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my bed.
– Robert Louis Stevenson (Read the rest here.)
I thought the most beautiful thing in the world must be shadow.
― Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar
And My soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted -Nevermore
– Edgar Allan Poe
Peter Pan chased his. Sometimes we box our own. It can be a noun (a darkness, silhouette, outline). It can be a verb (to follow, to shade or darken). It can be an adjective (shadow boxing, shadowless, shadowlike). Borrow one of the quotes (please give credit where due) and let that be your kickoff. Borrow the photo (again, give credit), and let it take you where it may. Or shadow your own poem path. Just be sure your 44-word poem contains some form of the word shadow.
Here’s how to Quadrille:
– Write a poem of exactly 44 words, including the word shadow.
– Put your poem on your blog and link back to this post.
– Link it up to our Mr. Linky.
– Visit other blogs. Enjoy some amazing poets. Comment. Come back later this week and write another one, and visit some more. Comment some more. Cast as many poem shadows as you please. I’ll be reading all week.

The pub is open three hours early today. Is the sun over the yardarm yet?
whimsygizmo said:
Sorry, Brian. My bad. Must have botched the timezone math. Have checked in with Bjorn and Grace to see what I should do (let her ride, or get things started.) At any rate, welcome! 😉
Brian said:
No big deal. Just check the shadows on the sundial and when they reach a quarter clockwise then you subtract by how many time zones you are from the pub plus the amount of empty glasses on the bar counter and that should equal the correct time. Provided it’s not cloudy… or night… 🙂
Victoria C. Slotto said:
Oh, way too much math for this girl.
Brian said:
Math? In a pub? Who said that?
whimsygizmo said:
Do shot glasses count the same as wine glasses? 😉
Brian said:
I think – more math here – it’s a 3-to-1 ratio. Three zinfandel equals one shot of absinthe. By that time the shadows will have grown long and expounding on the philosophy of the sacred glass will have rendered all math superfluous… not to mention unintelligible to us teetotalers.
Victoria C. Slotto said:
Sounds good to me. Maybe it would help my math.
whimsygizmo said:
Math is always unintelligible, in my book. Forgive me, for I have zinned. 😉
lillian said:

Grace said:
Just a note to make it 15.00, smiles. I will check next time to be sure. But this is a nice surprise 🙂 Welcome everyone ~
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Actually it worked fine for me…
Grace said:
For the Europeans, this is okay of course 🙂 I am still in the office and will make my rounds shortly 🙂
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
🙂 Actually I was on my way home when it opened…
whimsygizmo said:
Worked better for me to be around longer on the front end (not that I planned it on purpose, lol). Bar normally opens at noon my time, and my older kid needs picked up at 1, this year.
kim881 said:
Hi De and Brian – I’m early today and so are you! Which is great for me! I love the prompt, De!
whimsygizmo said:
Yessss. I must have messed up the timezone math. Math and I are not friends. Hope I’m not in trouble. Glad you’re here early, too! 😉
kim881 said:
That’s one thing I’m totally useless at. I sympathise 🙂
Victoria C. Slotto said:
Math is my nemesis. I see I’m in good company. Just remember it goes up 1500 our time, De. It’s already set for east coast time.
whimsygizmo said:
I thought that was what I clicked. Ah, well. Between the math and the technology, I am often doomed.
Victoria C. Slotto said:
Moi aussi.
frankhubeny said:
Nice heart shadow.
whimsygizmo said:
Thanks, Frank! I like to look for valentines in nature. 😉
Loved your piece.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Early today and me to – no problem really 😉
whimsygizmo said:
**sheepish grin**
I can’t math, ever. Especially timezone math, apparently.
Bryan Ens said:
Hi De. Just need a point of clarification…you said to use one of the quotes. Is that something you *want* us to do…or is that an option that you are giving us (that we can do or not do as the mood fits)?
Thanks!
And by the way…”shadow” is a great prompt word! I’ll just need to ruminate on it for a bit before writing a piece 🙂
whimsygizmo said:
An option, always! Thanks for clarifying, Bryan. The only rules for the Q44 are exactly 44 words, and to use the word provided!
whimsygizmo said:
Now mixing these, for anybody interested:

(Absinthe and poetry just seem to go together, don’t they?) 😉
And of course, a nonalcoholic offering…I shall all it Shadow Poem-ade. Lots of citrus, and floating blueberries.

Absinthe – the green fairy for a shadowed soul
whimsygizmo said:
Holy cow. I just put “fairy-shimmer green” in a poem. How weird is that?
whimsygizmo said:
It’s in The One Where She Uses All the Words, my third for the word today. 😉 I’ll link ’em up later.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:

YES. LOL!
Victoria C. Slotto said:
Lovely choice of words, De…especially since, at this time of year, those lengthening shadows in the evening just stun.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I do love them.. and yes the right word to use..
Grace said:
Goodness, we are early, smiles. It is alright De 🙂
whimsygizmo said:
Sorry. 😉 I blame the math. Always.
Grace said:
Thanks for hosting and giving us another lovely challenge !!!
sarahsouthwest said:
Loved your quadrille, but can’t seem to comment on your site. The delicate end of summer.
sarahsouthwest said:
This looks like a shady dive, full of shadowy characters. I’ll have something long and dark, please. Lovely prompt, am really looking forward to reading the results!
whimsygizmo said:
Long, dark and on the rocks. Comin’ right up…
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Would an umbrella drink be appropriate?
whimsygizmo said:
A parasol drink would be, for sure. 😉
sarahsouthwest said:
Maybe one with a parasol?
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Ha… of course 🙂
Glenn Buttkus said:
Imagine my surprise, I arrive exactly at the appointed time, & boy howdy, I’m already three hours late; smile. No sweat, De–looks like lots of folks came early & were ready to rumble. Good choice for the prompt–shadows poems will pile up soon.
whimsygizmo said:
Glenn, when you come wielding Nietzsche, you can show up any time you please. 😉 Sorry you feel late. My bad. Pouring you and extra strong something.
lillian said:
Love the prompt De. I was doing lovely things (eye dr, dentist) so did not see the early post. Just put mine up. Shall take my ipad downstairs to laundry room and read me some quadrilles while the washing machine pulses and the dryer spins. Looking forward to seeing some shadows on my iPad screen! 🙂
PS: Provincetown muse was so tempting and home late Sunday — so till must get over to read me some OLN too. Maybe the quads for the washing machine and the OLN for the dryer spins? 🙂
whimsygizmo said:
OLN escaped me completely this past week. I just can’t seem to adjust to the later-in-the-week flow, now that school has started. Happy Reading, Lill. I shall pour you something fabulous. Spun, not shaken. 😉
Dr. Crystal Howe said:
Thanks for a prompt that turned out unexpectedly for me, De! Not my usual more positive outlook, but it works here.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Maybe thinking of shadows make us look darkly.
ladynyo said:
Uh oh. I’ve never written a quadrille before. I hope this passes in the shadows. LOL!
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Just a poem with 44 words exactly… including the word shadow… this is one of our most popular prompts..
ladynyo said:
Ok, Bjorn. But I am suspicious of things that seem too easy! LOL! I sorta missed the more mystical stuff with the prompt shadow, but there will be other times. Thanks!
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Had to keep traditions and do one using all the quadrille words we have used up till now… It’s starting to be hard.
whimsygizmo said:
It is. But hyphens help. 😉
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:

whimsygizmo said:
Yep. 🙂 I think I shall. 😉

Well hello…I guess I am EXTRA late to the party today, but so happy to join in.
I was excited about the word, “shadow” for the quadrille. Great choice, De!! 🙂
Hoping for a dark hot chocolate…a bit chillier out today.
whimsygizmo said:
Oooooo. Hot here (again) today, but that sounds delicious, Mish. I shall pour a round. With extra whipped cream, and dark chocolate shavings. Dark chocolate is still a super food, right? 😉
Mish said:
Oh probably too hot for me…your weather, not my hot chocolate….and I declare dark chocolate to be a super food forever! 😉
whimsygizmo said:
Hey, gang. I have just opened the floodgates and posted a third. Now pouring triple shots (of hot chocolate), and inviting all to write as many as you like. I’ll be reading all week!
Victoria C. Slotto said:
Your shadow-muse has been on overdrive, my dear. I just read a fun string of poems that came to my e-mail. I have a third one, too. I think this word prompts. Mine is for a special person we lost yesterday. Make my next drink an Arnold Palmer (50% ice tea, 50% lemonade). Raise one to the King (of golf).
whimsygizmo said:
YES, Victoria. With pleasure.
Bodhirose said:
Hit me up with a triple shot, De! Thanks for a great word to work with this week…I’m enjoying reading everyone’s poems. There’s some great ones out there. 🙂
whimsygizmo said:
You got it, Gayle. Bottoms up! 😉
Linda Kruschke said:
Great choice of words, De! I’ll be back tomorrow to read all the Quadrilles. For now I’m off to my Bible Study Fellowship class where we are studying the Gospel of John, which was the inspiration for my Quadrille today.
whimsygizmo said:
Loved your piece (and peace), Linda! 🙂

Good morning! (At least where I am, it’s morning.) Welcome! I’m so glad you’re here, and can’t wait to read your first Quadrille! 🙂
whimsygizmo said:
A word of warning: They’re addicting! 😉
whippetwisdom said:
Good morning De, it is mid-afternoon here and wild and windy outside :o)
whimsygizmo said:
We had some of that wind earlier this week. This morning it is a gorgeous 69 degrees, blue skies and full of hope. Thankful.
whimsygizmo said:
Good morning, gang! Bright and early here in Southern Nevada. Grace will be at the bar with a new post later for Poetics (and you KNOW she’s gonna be right on time, not early like me.) 😉 So that means we’ve got 5 1/2 hours to fill the world with more Quadrilles! Who’s up for a double (or triple) shot? Who hasn’t played yet and needs a nudge?
Come play shadow (poem) puppets with me! 😉
❤
Grace said:
🙂 And that’s why Quadrille is the most popular prompt that we have ~
Brian said:
Good morning/afternoon everyone. I posted a second poem for the prompt today.
whimsygizmo said:
Yay! Heading over now, Brian! 🙂
whimsygizmo said:
Sharon, I can’t get your Mr. Linky to work, and these days I don’t know where to find you. Can you please double check the link, or advise? I don’t want to miss your Quadrille! Thanks.
mother wintermoon said:
I’m in! I see there’s already a new prompt up, so I hope to get in on this De-lightful prompt before the deadline expires. 🙂

So glad you’re here, Truedessa! Welcome!
Rosemary Nissen-Wade said:
Fascinating prompt, and nice to be reminded of Stevenson, whose ‘A Child’s Garden’ I had when very young. Sorry I am late to the party. Very busy week here, but I will be spending some time on aeroplanes in the next few days, so will hope to use it to catch up with everyone else’s posts if I don’t manage that sooner!
whimsygizmo said:
Glad to see you here, Rosemary! 🙂
Imelda said:
I’m very late to the party but, happily, I managed to throw in some 44 words helter-skelter like to link up. 🙂
Thanks for the prompt, De.
