I’ll Say It Again (and Again and Again)
Today, my husband and I celebrate our wedding anniversary…26 years. Not bad for a couple who married in their 40’s (for the first time.) I think of how, in life, repetition plays a pivotal and useful role. In this case, the yearly event marking our marriage helps to keep love and commitment alive.
Cycles of the moon, seasons, birthdays, holidays—so many ways to add a little flavor to the unfolding of our lives, that are played out, for the most part, in ordinary times. And since poetry is such a reflection of life, repetition has a significant role to play there, too.
Here’s a definition that I found on a most helpful page on the Poetry Foundation’s website:
Repetition: The purposeful re-use of words and phrases for an effect. Sometimes, especially with longer phrases that contain a different key word each time, this is called parallelism. It has been a central part of poetry in many cultures. Many of the Psalms use this device as one of their unifying elements.
How about s a prime example from the first 9 verses of Psalm 136:
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever.
2 Give thanks to the God of gods,
for his steadfast love endures forever.
3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
4 to him who alone does great wonders,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
5 to him who by understanding made the heavens,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
6 to him who spread out the earth above the waters,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
7 to him who made the great lights,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
8 the sun to rule over the day,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
9 the moon and stars to rule over the night,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
The psalmist certainly leaves no doubt as to the subject matter of his poem.
Repetition can occur in a number of ways: a single word, a phrase, a sound, a line beginning or ending, or use of a refrain for example. The use of repetition creates intensity, unifies the poem, reinforces or takes the place of meter, adds emphasis and emotional response–just a few of the reasons to employ this useful technique.
So for today’s prompt I invite you to delve into the technique of repetition and bring it with you to the bar. I look forward to seeing what you come up with and if I’m a bit late—well, hey—it’s our anniversary.
If you are unsure how to join in:
Write your poem and post it on your blog or website
Copy the URL and copy/paste it in Mr. Linky at the bottom of this post
Return to the pub, read your fellow poets work and comment
Have fun. I say it again, HAVE FUN!
For dVerse Poets’ I’m Victoria–so happy to be your hostess this evening.
Good noon (here) fellow poets. So happy to welcome you to the bar where we sip words well crafted and enjoy the company of our fellow poets. Sit back and I’m ready to mix up your request. Hope you will read and comment liberally.
Love to do repetitions… I often do, but it was hard to use it like this. I used to do it more in the past so this was a great revisit
And a nicely drafted revisit it was.
Happy Happy Anniversary, Victoria! Enjoy your day! ❤
Welcome to the Pub, gang. Happy {Happy Happy} Poeming! 😉
Smiling, I know you will do great with this
Thank you, De. So far, busy but good.
I came home very late today and had to write something real quickly… might be a bit to close to my heart
I suspected that. Ugh.
I hope to sleep ok today, but needs to head to bed soon.
Dormez bien.
Hi Victoria, Bjorn and De! I’m afraid I’ve hit a bit of a low and have also written something quickly. I might go to bed early tonight as I haven’t been sleeping very well. I’ll be back in the morning to read.
Happy anniversary, Victoria! and congratulations on 26 years! David and I are not far behind you – ours in on 30th January and it will be 24 years. I hope you are celebrating in style. Love Kim xx
Thank you, Kim, and happy anniversary in advance. I hope you have a good night sleep. I also had problems with sleep after my mom died and, I hate to tell you this, but still do.
Thank for the advance anniversary wishes, Victoria. I had been having problems with sleeping for a long time and then just before Christmas I started to sleep through until about six o’clock. Now I’m back to where I was before. I’ll just have to give myself some slack.
I kind of think insomnia is a poet’s curse. 4AM and my brain kicks in!
I think you’re right, Victoria.
Take care kim and I hope you have good healing rest and much comfort
Thank you! I’ve been up over an hour reading poems from last night. It’s always best to have a fresh pair of eyes!
Happy anniversary Victoria~ Wishing you and hubby more cheers and love!
Thanks so much, Grace.
Happy Anniversary, Victoria and Kim (in advance) We celebrated our 32 December 29th. Seems lots of us got married in the Winter! I’m down with bronchitis and feeling blah. My offering is very slight… but so it goes.
As to sleep, this is something that plagues me, also. I don’t like sleeping pills because it takes me all day to shake off the fog. Warm milk helps…a colder room, too. Best here. It is something that wears on you.
Ah, your anniversary is my b-day, Jane. Happy you are here. Sounds like insomnia is the order of the day, today!
Hi Victoria! Happy Birthday, dear heart. Insomnia….it is a plague. As I aged, it got worse. My 96 year old mother doesn’t sleep for more than 4 hours…and hasn’t for years. I think perhaps it has something to do with the chaos of our society and world. I do know I am thinking of things I would never have been exposed to before….it’s a constant stream of concerns…yikes! I want to crawl under a rock.
Find a rock where there’s room for 2 of us!
Will Do.
Happy anniversary to you! And a very lovely prompt, thank you. 💜
Thank you, Kay. Glad you enjoyed it.
You’re welcome!
Grrrrr…I am out of the house and can’t get my link in correctly for today. Can you correct it? Title is My Choice and you’ll find it at http://lillianthehomepoet.com
I can’t remember how to order the date etc in mr Linky 😳
Many thanks in advance if you can fix it and/or delete the “bad” one I put the in!
Okay. I got it right — but can’t delete the first mr Linky Lillian, which is the wrong one. Can someone delete that one? So sorry to be a pest!
So now I’ll say happy Thursday everyone! Love this prompt! And yes, so many beautiful psalms. Will get to reading when I get home later today😊
I am home and no longer crazed. Fixed everything. What a doofus!
SO: Happy Anniversary to Victoria and, in advance, to Kim! I am now sipping my chardonnay and shall read tonight.
I must report to jury duty tomorrow — hopefully to sit quietly and read a book and then be told I may return home. Civic duty — am glad to serve as long as they can guarantee I can leave for Bermuda on January 29th! 🙂
Good luck with jury duty. I have NEVER been called. Hmmm. Wonder why.
They call you every 3 years in Massachusetts. I’ve been called and only got close once to serving — I was the next one to be questioned in voir dire but they filled the jury with the person in front of me. When you are 70, you can simply say you do not care to serve — no excuses needed. I am 4 months shy of 70 so I’ll be in the courthouse at 8 AM tomorrow. Hope they let me bring in a LARGE Starbucks! 🙂
Guess I’m home free, then. One benefit of being “older.”
Happy Anniversary, Victoria!
Thanks, Walt. Nice to “see” you.
Some fun was found within the sound of words written down.
The rote of dawns that marching on
Wrote of yawns that night brings on
Yep. I think you always have fun with your poems! I do.
i’m glad Victoria. We should always have fun with what we do. though honestly some of them hurt. a lot. but that’s the stuff that needs to get moved through, in order to move beyond it. Otherwise it gets stuck, (a form of repetition that is not such fun.) heh, thanks De for the parenthese.
HUGE CONGRATULATIONS Victoria on your wedding anniversary!
Thank you!
You deserve it♡♡
Good afternoon! (or evening or morning)
I’ve been married 26 years also! And I love the psalms. They have calmed many restless nights. Looking forward to coming up with something new here with the repetition theme
Maybe something patriotic, very excited about the inauguration tomorrow, with high hopes for our new president.
I am too. Glad to know someone else is hopeful.
Loved this prompt, Victoria. Happy Happy Anniversary to wonderful you, and your lucky husband. Hubby and I just passed the 18-year mark, and going strong. ❤
Thank you so much, De. And you have a lovely family to show for it!
Happy Anniversary Victoria. I have been with Nessa since 1982 now and married since 85. I have had a busy and long tiring day so may write in the morn when I’m refreshed by sleep or I may drink a wee dram and come to life enough to pen something this eve. 😉
Ah, Paul, it’ll be a double on the house for you to celebrate you and your lovely wife. Nice track record.
Oops. Originally call you Joseph. Two strong names, though.
Congratulations Victoria, great effort hope you have many more years together..
Thank you so much, Michael.
I was on a jury twice, once for grand jury. It was a great experience
Couldn’t get on. My poem is at nanmykel.com, “Repeating lines” for d’Verse.
Got it, Nan. Not sure how to delete the old ones, though.
Aargh. This is one of my favorite poetic devices, and I DO have an idea, but it just won’t come together. Might have to wait for OLN…maybe I’ll manage it tomorrow.
Know that feeling, Bryan.
Wish you a very happy Anniversary and many more repetitions to come in the years ahead! Absolutely loved the repetition and the kind of effect it creates. Surprisingly, I had never really noticed it before though it has been right before my eyes every time I heard a piece of music, read a book or had my son cajole me for allowing him to do something that he’s not supposed to! The power of repetition for sure! I had fun doing this, hope you have fun reading it!!
oh yes, GD, like the ripples in a pond, or the ripples of our life upon the world. its what makes music, music.
Ripples… Mesmerising in their symmetry. Patterns, rhythms, cycles- isn’t that the repetition if evolution? Considering the crime rate, we are definitely headed towards neanderthal phase again.
Looking forward to reading it. And what a great point you make about how find repetition in so many interactions.
Happy anniversary, Victoria, wishing you comfort and joy in the small daily repetitions and rituals! It is a poetic device I occasionally over-use, so I may have a stab at it, but I look forward to reading at least a few others.
Good point. Like any device, it can be overdone–and sometimes if someone is learning to work with it, that’s okay.
Phew!! Late to the bar 🙂 Happy Anniversary my sweet Victoria! 💜 I wouldn’t have missed this prompt for the world! After all… repetition is my absolute favorite 😉
Sharing my poem “Le soleil”.. hope you all like it..!💜
Lots of love,
Sanaa
Thank you, Sanaa. Your wish on Facebook opened up a flurry of well wishing and we appreciate it so much.
That was the plan ❤️
You’re welcome 🙂
Thank you for hosting Victoria and happy 26th anniversary to you both! Paul and I will be celebrating our 26th wedding anniversary in June, so there is already a repetition here :o) I have added a tanka for this prompt, I have never used repetition in a tanka before and thought I would give it a go. I will swing by later with a cup of tea to read xxx
How fun. Look how many of us have had enduring marriages–an exception in this day and age. Can’t wait to see what you did with the Tanka.
After a long week it’s finally time to hit the trail again…
Glad you survived, Bjorn.
Happy Anniversary, Victoria!
Thanks so much, Jennifer.
It took me so long to think of one that the widget expired for links. Ha.
Here is mine. Going to go read some from the link-up. =)
