BY THOM GUNN
It mounts at sea, a concave wall
Down-ribbed with shine,
And pushes forward, building tall
Its steep incline.
Then from their hiding rise to sight
Black shapes on boards
Bearing before the fringe of white
It mottles towards.
Their pale feet curl, they poise their weight
With a learn’d skill.
It is the wave they imitate
Keeps them so still.
The marbling bodies have become
Half wave, half men,
Grafted it seems by feet of foam
Some seconds, then,
Late as they can, they slice the face
In timed procession:
Balance is triumph in this place,
Triumph possession.
The mindless heave of which they rode
A fluid shelf
Breaks as they leave it, falls and, slowed,
Loses itself.
Clear, the sheathed bodies slick as seals
Loosen and tingle;
And by the board the bare foot feels
The suck of shingle.
They paddle in the shallows still;
Two splash each other;
Then all swim out to wait until
The right waves gather.

Happy Thursday back… I needed to be reminded of waves at a time like this.
Warm waves here, false spring is teasing us ~
I decided to write another installment about my aged librarian series.
Cool! Be right there 😀
You must used my word vellichor..ha..ha.. Your series is excellent Bjorn ~
I have to keep that in mind… 🙂
Happy OLN everyone 🍷

Happy OLN Sanaa ~

Hi Grace and everyone imbibing at the bar! I enjoyed the Thom Gunn poem very much, Grace. Mine is very short today as I’ve been rather busy but I look forward to reading a wide range of poetry once I have posted.
We’ve had a day of 80 mph winds, which scared the cats and had me jumping with every clunk and thud! Luckily, so far, only a down pipe has been blown off and I’m sure we can clip that back on again. However, there have been some serious accidents and widespread travel problems over here. It’s dying down now and I’m looking forward to a quieter weekend. I hope you are all well. Kim x
Here we have some sunny and cold weather… 🙂 hope to do some skating over the weekend.
I haven’t been skating for many years – lucky you! Enjoy.
Getting warm here Kim but its not lasting long ~ Winter here lasts until April, ha ~ Hope you have a quiet and relaxing weekend ~
Thank you, Grace. I’m going to a Norfolk reading project meeting and then on to a friend’s – she’s going to help me find a frame for a large photograph of Ellen’s wedding.
Hard choice to choose between 2 different poems today…
Great to have two to choose from… 🙂 I wrote mine in a hurry
Wrote mine during lunch break.ha..ha…. 🙂
Hello everyone on this thirsty Thursday. Thank you for hosting this, Grace. I would like a big tall frosty glass of ginger ale please. In contrast to Kim’s weather, the sky is blue and cloudless, the temp is 79 F, and it is so calm, you can hear the cardinals from across the way with their “pretty pretty pretty” calls.
Hello Toni ~ Here you go *clicks glasses* and cheers to you ~ Weather here is playing tricks and I am envious of those cardinals chirping about ~ Here its been ducks and doves only so I am waiting for spring season to bring more colorful birds around our place ~
They are always around down here. What I am looking forward to are the butterflies!
Happy OLN everyone and thank you for hosting tonight Grace. We had a calm day here today after storm Doris swept by yesterday. Hang in there Kim, she will pass quickly! I have linked a tanka I posted earlier today and will swing by to read in a minute :o)
No storm here yet… but it might come across the North sea.
Is the tanka one of yours or one of Eivor’s?
We wrote this one together ☺🐾🐾
❤
Nice poem by Thom Gunn. I realized while reading it that surfing is one of the last things I will ever try to do. I’ll need to learn to swim first. Surfing is right up there with skydiving. Learning how to fly will have to come first.
The closest to surfing for me is kayaking… 🙂
No. You don’t have to learn to fly, just how to jump! 🙂 I can’t swim and I used to surf when a youngster. I also did sailing as well. I just wore a life belt when surfing. What a wonderful feeling of flying!
Cheers for hosting Grace and happy Thursday to you too!
My entry is a late offering re Suburban poetry, really enjoyed being inspired again. And long may it continue… :o]
Kind regards
Anna :o]
Good to see you Anna, and great to understand that you were inspired.
Cheers Bjorn!
Hello Anna. always good to see you at the Pub!
Thanks so much Toni. Good to be back!
Hey all! Thanks for the gunn, grace. Always good to keep one under the bar, in any good western. Home from work, done some woodworking, now some wordsmithing, then off to bed. Ridiculously warm here today…
wood and words great combo…
I’m with Frank. LOL! Skydiving and surfing…LOL! Short poem today, reworked, but that’s all I got in the brainpan. Thank you Grace and all else. I love OLN….it’s 70 today, perfectly beautiful ‘spring’ day, with Gainsborough clouds and soft blue sky. The contrast of the sky and the light grey trees, not blossoms yet, except the cherry blossom like Maples! The softness of the light makes you sleepy.
Ah… we are still caught in winter… no sign of bloom.. but I love the ice.
I love the ice as well. It’s a shame that it melts. I expect we’ll have another big snow in March and then back to spring.
Oo, me three on the ice. My river puts on lovely frozen skirts in wintertime. Hasn’t been cold enow to stop the flow, once the ice got all the way across ( in one spot about five feet long)
Hello everyone, am totally enjoying the February thaw that has seen temperatures reach double digits here (Celsius), with what has been a very mild winter, after predictions of a bitterly cold one, for most of Canada. Am sharing a poem, I have written early this month, about my struggle with body image and food, as part of my healing process.
Sounds lovely to have a touch of spring… 🙂
Storm Doris came to play in the early hours. Cold and snowy on the ground. Today was an inside day for once. I am nearing the end of a long musical project across 30 schools, the top of this particular mountain if you like, and I am weary ( but fulfilled) My poetry is short tonight. Happy OLN all.
Cheers to your project Paul ~ Looking forward to reading your poem ~
Thanks Grace. It has been epic..one week to go.
I have dropped a poem, the first for OLN in a long time. Whew! It’s good to be partially back in the saddle again.
Good to see you too Toni ~
Grace I’m so happy I made it for Open Link Night! I have something special to me this time, a personal poem and some artwork for you that I did. A change from my rhyming ways.
I hope everyone has a good weekend! Hugs all around!
Looking forward to it Bekkie ~ Thanks for joining us at OLN ~
A pleasure!
Hi! It is a very windy, dusty day here. Hope it’s better where you are. 🙂
Warmer than the usual winter here ~ Thanks for joining us ~
Night folks. I have a rare day off tomorrow so am going to pour myself a dram now and watch a movie and to hell with waking up early 😉
Good night Paul and enjoy your time off 🙂
I forgot it was going to be Open Link Night and had posted a poem earlier in the day, but have linked it up now and will visit the other sites. It was a stormy day in the UK and although I joke about the modest size of our hurricanes, it did get my internet connection down a few times over the course of the day…
Thanks for joining us Marina ~ I will be making my rounds of reading now ~
Hello! What a great pub! I enjoy reading the posts here, and the beautiful poems through Mister Linky. 🙂 Greetings from Hungary! 🙂
Hello! Nice to meet you ! I hope you entered your poem thru our Mr. Linky. We have OpenLinkNight every 2 weeks and prompts 3 x a week. Hope to read your poems soon.
Oh, how I love Thom Gunn’s poetry! And this splendid piece was one I didn’t know. Alas, I don’t have time to participate; just wanted to say thank you for the choice of poem.
Thank you for visiting and commenting Rosemary ~ Always a pleasure to share great poetry ~
I have been out skating more than 30 km today… wonderful ice, and some winter sun… Now I will go and check out the latecomers-
