Hello my poetic friends, this is Björn and today I want you to write a haibun about sport.
Sport can be so many things, the things you hate to watch, or what you love. The excitement of winning or the depression of losing.
It can be a game of football at the pub or watching figure skating lating at night.
Or why not sumo wrestling.
But sport is not just about competing.
How you might love to move your body, running, swimming cycling.
It could be a game with golf with friends or running a marathon.
Or how you might miss your ability to sport.
For me sport is more the later, and I could feel how much I missed it when I have to be careful after my recent eye-surgery. How much I love to be able to run again.
Sport is a word that can be so much more than what fills the sport pages.
Please give me a story about sport in a short piece of prose and add a haiku to add a dimension. Make it personal, make it you.
When you have written you haibun, link it up using Mr: Linky below.
Please visit and read, comment and learn by reading. The prompt is open for a week so remember to come back and read.
And give me a smile.
Hello… I’m not quite finished with my haibun yet, it has been a bit busy.
Good evening, everyone. I’m afraid it’s a quick post and then off to bed this evening as I haven’t been too well today and I must do as much exam marking as possible tomorrow. I will try to do some reading early in the morning before I start. I’m looking forward to reading everyone’s poems about sport. 🙂
Ha.. I will be early to bed as well… it was a late evening yesterday.
Ah, but you had something to celebrate!
Hope you are feeling better today, my friend.
Thank you, Victoria. I’m a little better but it’s one of those ongoing things.
I’m still working on mine about walking. I just found out that “speed” or “race” walking is an Olympic sport. That’s not the kind of walking I do which is more like slow walking. Hopefully my haibun should be ready this evening.
I’m a slow walker, too, Frank. I like to look at what’s around me rather than let it whizz past!
I do like a bit of running… or cycling… much preferred to watching sports for me.
Hello everyone! I must admit, I have never participated in sports at all. Well, I was a high school cheerleader – I think the only one who learned the rules of the games of football and basketball so I could be a “knowledgeable” cheerleader 😊 I do enjoy walking and hiking. I’m more of a “read at the poolside” kind of gal and just learned how to swim two years ago – the back stroke only so I can watch the clouds through my water spotted goggles! Will read some now and mainly return in the AM. Summer has arrived in BOSTON with a vengeance!
Ha… I wanted this to be a challenge… sport is something that is hard to catch my interest… but I’ve found that I think a lot while running.
I make no apologies for my entry. I hate sport, and the only one I was ever been able to get worked up about as a child was horse racing. I’d just like to point out that Pat Taft didn’t use his whip on Arkle. He never needed to, but it would have been like whipping his kid brother.
Ha.. I think sport is something that most of us hate…. until we give it a thought and find that little corner of ourselves where we really love it a bit.
I have yet to find that little corner then 🙂
Well, I was never sporty at school, because I considered myself to be an intellectual. However, I have discovered a love of running (by myself), and of cardio-tennis (with other people). My kids seem to do an awful lot of sport, so I spend a lot of time driving them, watching them, and listening to them dissecting their performance. I don’t know how I’d manage if they were REALLY sporty! I recently read a book called “Eat, Sweat, Play” ( https://www.panmacmillan.com/authors/anna-kessel/eat-sweat-play ) about women and sport, and how empowering (and enjoyable) physical activity is. I recommend it to all you non-sports out there…
It’s truly a great joy to move. But it might be something you have to make a habit of.
I’ll be a good sport and participate! Interesting turn of phrase “good sport.” I’ve never heard of a bad sport. …although there are some sports I think less of than others. Barkeep, I’ll have a Highball — which, interestingly enough, has nothing to do with sports, but railroads. No wonder we love the English language!
Ha, some highball scores well with me.
Glad to hear it!
Love this prompt! Decided to go with my non-competative fav. We are headed out to Epcot for our power-walk, but I’ll be reading with coffee in hand tomorrow morning. With that in mind, barkeep, I’ll go for a kale smoothie and have the Pinot Noir upon my return. Happy Monday, y’all!
Powerwalking sounds great.. but maybe a bit warm tool
In Florida in June… a bit warm is an understatement! Maybe more like a Power Sweat! HAHA!
LOL! Jane D. I’m with her. However, I love the ‘idea’ of Sumo Wrestling and have tried to learn something of this ‘sport’….it’s taken much more seriously in Japan, though. Thank you, Bjorn for hosting this Haibun Monday. I love Haibuns but I am really new to them. So…..mine is a very quick shot at it all. But this theme is a GREAT topper for a really trying day.
I think just the process of learning about sumo wrestling is worth writing about.
thank you for posting that video. And I am thankful that some sumo men were sitting in the audience. When 300-400 lbs of muscle and fat land on you, in the audience, the medics must be around. These sumo wrestlers are amazing….and as barriers for the safety of the public. LOL!
Good evening/morning/afternoon! I just got home from work and posted mine. I’ll take a vodka-cranberry on the rocks!
It’s coming up.
Well I have never thought about writing about sports. Thanks for the amazing prompt, Bjorn.
There is a first time for everything
This was interesting. My first attempt at haibun. Hope I did it right!
Look forward to check it out
Slow and intermittent internet in Penang ( and ahem!! the bar has a Jacuzzi) I caan post but commenting may have to wait a day or two. Miss you all.
I’ve been enjoying your photos! Enjoy — and not to worry about reading. Just glad to see you here, Paul.
I’m a limited sports-person and never got into spectator sports until I met my husband, the controller of the remote. Now I do enjoy watching football, NBA when it’s the warriors. I’m a bit late this week and expect to be interrupted soon, but I will read by-‘n-by! Thanks for hosting Bjorn.
