Lillian here, happy to host OLN today.
Did you know that August 9th is officially:
National Hand Holding Day
National Rice Pudding Day
National Book Lovers Day
International Day of the World’s Indigenous People
National Polka Day
So let’s celebrate!
Pick ONE from the list above and let me know here on the pub chat page, which one you’ll rock with today. Let’s see which one gets the most votes!!
Hmmmm perhaps I should be serving celebratory drinks too?
And it’s OLN so that means everyone can post ONE poem of their choosing – any form and any topic.
I look forward to reading your poems!
New to dVerse? Glad to have you – and here’s what we hope everyone does:
- Share any ONE poem of your choosing and post to your own blog.
- Click on Mr. Linky below to add your name and enter the direct URL to your poem
- On your blog, please provide a link back to dVerse. This enables others to enjoy our prompts, multiples our readers and thus the responses to everyone’s poems.
- If you promote your poem on social media, use the tag #dverse poets
- And most importantly, please do read some of the other responses to the prompt and add a short comment or reaction. Everyone likes to be appreciated! The prompt is “live” for several days – as you’ll notice by the comments you’ll receive – so do stop by another day and read a few of the latecomers too!

That’s a lot of celebrations! I will come and have a look at all of these!
Polka Day, fo sho. 😉
Welcome to dVerse folks! It’s quite a celebratory day, August 9th! I’m celebrating National Book Lovers Day — so that’s 1 vote for that holiday 🙂
Remember — OLN means any 1 poem you’d like to share. Does not have to relate to one of these holidays mentioned above…just thought it would be fun to offer a celebratory flair to the pub today!
Bar is open 🙂
why- National Book Lovers Day, of course!
Smiling I am! 2 votes we have there. But, I do love the outright joy and energy of a good polka band 🙂
🙂
Since all the BLACKTHORNE episodes are based on my unpublished novel, I guess it has to be National Book Lovers Day fr me. Thanks for hosting, and offering so many options for OLN.
Hi there, Glenn. I do LOVE your Blackthorne series! I find myself right in the scenes you paint for us with the music, camera shifts, and incredible characters.
BUT — for everyone…remember, you don’t have to post a poem having to do with these holidays…just thought it would be fun to mention them and see who relates to what! 🙂
Will mosey over out west in a bit, Glenn! 🙂
By the way–August 9 is the anniversary of the bombing of Nagasaki too.
Oh yes — I should have remembered that after our prompt for Hiroshima Day. We had so many serious and thought provoking and amazing posts from that prompt. I thought I’d go with the cheefulness and mundane polka band and rice pudding 🙂
Good evening Lill! Good evening dVerse Poets! I’m celebrating national Book Lovers Day today and tomorrow I’m celebrating my birthday. I linked up a poem I wrote earlier this week from a Poets United Midweek Motif prompt. I’ll try to read as many poems as I can in the next hour as I am preoccupied this evening and hope to be out all day tomorrow!
Welcome, Kim! Another vote for Book Lovers Day! And…happy birthday! 🙂 Drinks all around for your special day.
Thank you, lovely Lill!
Happy Birthday Kim! hope you celebrate in fine, stylish fashion and may all your wishes, most certainly the poetic ones, come true, this special day, and in the next year 🎇
Thank you kindly, Pat! It’s 6.47 and I have some cards and a present from my daughter to open. We’re escaping to the cinema for the matinee of ‘The Escape’ later and then lunch in Norwich , hopefully at The Tipsy Vegan.
The Tipsy Vegan — now that sounds like a great restaurant!
We didn’t make it – we got caught in pouring rain with no umbrella, no jackets, and I was wearing flimsy shoes! 🌂
Have a wonderful and celebratory day! It sounds lovely 🙂
Thank you, Pat. It rained all day!
well, as long as their is a song and sunshine in your heart …
Thanks for hosting, Lillian! Today is a good day to celebrate.
Good to see you here, Frank! It’s a celebratory day:)
Good evening dear poets and thank you for hosting tonight Lillian! There is a lot to celebrate and I am rocking with the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People as this fits perfectly with the tanka I posted earlier today :o) xxx
Welcome! Nice to see you here and I’ve recorded your vote! It’s always tricky to keep on pace with OLN as so many post and stop by….it’s always quite an OLN celebration. Will be reading for quite a bit here 🙂
National book lovers day… that’s not in here… so we are not allowed (have to go to the international ones).
Well, inside the pub we’ll let you celebrate Book Lovers Day! 🙂
International Day of the World’s Indigenous People
Unfortunately, celebrating them doesn’t right the many wrongs they have suffered.
I do agree. We were quite impressed in New Zealand to see all that has done to acknowledge and promote the Maoris. Not enough….but certainly way way more that anything the US has done for its American Indian population.
Afternoon, Poets! Thanks, lillian, for pubtending the OLN today! I’ll go with Book Lover’s for $500, please! 🙂
Hah — Book Lovers seems to be the most popular today! 🙂 Nice to see you here, Frank.
Wouldn’t miss it! 😉
Sorry for not posting a celebratory poem, Lillian. Too many non-celebratory events for me, from the tiny to the monumental. I’ll have a glass of wine and I’ll feel better, no doubt 🙂
Glass of wine coming up! A pub is a good place to just sit….think….and the pub tender is always happy to commiserate a bit too. 🙂
That’s probably why it’s full 🙂
I’ll go with book lover’s day, but maybe I’ll try to polka a little bit, too. 🙂 Thanks for the fun facts, Lillian!
Glad to see you at the pub today! I do love a peppy polka band! 🙂
Thank you, Lillian! Today is a VERY SPECIAL DAY in South Africa!
Glad to see you here today! HAPPY NATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY IN SOUTH AFRICA! Happy to toast to that 🙂
Funny — I’ve been doing research on a trip to Africa (has been my dream since high school when I literally just missed being an exchange student to Africa) – looking into visiting an old friend in Cape Town and then doing a safari. Any recommendations for a tour company? 🙂
Off on a dinner date with my husband. Will return to read and chat either later tonight or first thing in the AM. Key is under the mat by the door; lights on; and libations at the ready. We have a few decorations in the pub tonight…in celebration of all the holidays mentioned above and National Women’s Day in South Africa! ENJOY!
I celebrate books every day! Always have books coming in the mail, or I’m shopping for books, or trading books at the library. Books everywhere. Seriously, I have a problem with books!
Well…..if one has to have an addiction of some sort, I think a book addiction would be a good one to have 🙂 Vote recorded! Glad to see you at the pub.
Hi Lilian! Thanks for hosting OLN – and hmmm…. books or people? I love books, naturally, but my vote has to rest with International Day of the World’s Indigenous People. Without people, there are no stories, no books – and it’s the oldest cultures that hold the wisdom, the keys to our world ….
Ah….very well said. Vote recorded! Catching up in the chat this morning…and then on to the reading 😉
Handholding day for me today!
First vote for this very special day…..I’ve always loved handholding…especially when taking a sauntering walk with my hubby! 🙂
Hmm – so much to celebrate…not sure where I’m leaning, although I do like a good rice pudding, and polka I can do without….we’ll see.
Okay – I decided to go with hand-holding. It’s quick and nasty, but at least I’m here.
ooooh….so close to getting another vote for rice pudding…..hand holding it is! Good to see you at the pub!
It was a close one for me, I admit.
Books for me, Lillian! (Though I’d like to hold hands and have some rice pudding, too.)
It’s past my bedtime, but I wanted to get this up on my dad’s actual birthday, even though I’ve had some wine, so who knows how it sounds? 🙂 I’ll be back tomorrow to read.
Well…….I don’t have strict rules on only 1 vote….and I can’t deny you your interest in hand holding and rice pudding so one vote for each, so recorded! Happy birthday to your dad!
Catching up on the chat this morning — a bit late for me as I slept in till 8 and it felt delicious. Then on to reading. 🙂
Rice pudding!
You got it! And by the way, the pub is serving up rice pudding as well as its usual libations in honor of this day! 🙂 Glad to see you at the pub, Mary. I’ll be on to reading in just a bit….sipping my coffee first this morning and engaging in some good pub chat first! 🙂
I guess I am feeling romantic because I am going with National Hand Holding Day but I want to carry a book in my other hand. I always enjoy reading the poems folks post. Thanks for hosting, Lillian.
Glad to see you at the pub — I’ve recorded 1 vote for hand holding and 1/2 vote for book lovers day….just trying to be accurate here 🙂 Glad to see you at the pub. I always enjoy hosting, chatting and then reading all the posts. So much variety and so many perspectives. We’re quite a global and diverse group which makes this a very special pub indeed. Wouldn’t it be marvelous if we could say “abbracadabbra” and turn this, just for one hour, into a real pub and we’d all be milling about???? 🙂
Happy book lovers day! Fun intro, Lillian.
Good morning, Victoria! Slept in a bit — till 8 this AM. I’m usually up and at ’em by 5:30. Must say, it felt delicious to roll over and grab some more shut-eye! So catching up on the chat now and then on to reading. Recorded your vote as a book lover 🙂
I must say, I’m happy to report that Polka Day does have 2 votes 🙂
PS: Always happy to have a little fun at dVerse! 🙂
I’ll go with rice pudding today!
And did you notice when you stepped up to the bar? We are serving rice pudding as well as all our normal libations today — of course, in honor of Rice Pudding Day! Ive recorded your vote……will do some preliinary tallying in a bit! And on to reading.
GOOD MORNING dVERSE! Slept in till 8 this AM — usually up about 5:30 but it was delicious to pull the shade down and roll over for a bit more shut-eye!
So — pub is definitely open all day today! And we’ll keep late hours as well. If I’m not here, key will be under the mat, rice pudding in the fridge behind the bar, and all of our libations available. ENJOY!
PS: As of this morning, the vote is
Book Lovers 11
World People 4 (counting the celebration of South Africa’s Women’s Day vote)
Hand Holders 5 (I thought we had a lot more romatic folks than that!)
Polka folks 2
Rice Pudding lovers 3
Still tallying — so if you’re just coming to the pub after reading this….do cast your vote!
And now, on to reading!
I celebrate the children of the world, and especially those in Syria, in war torn countries. I celebrate their hold on life and their hopes for life.
Now that is a beautiful and worthwhile celebration!
Closin’ up the pub! THANKS to all who celebrated with me. It was grand!
I’m late, but here’s my lowkey depressing interpretation on rice pudding!!!
