Hello dear poets! Michelle Beauchamp, here, aka Mish bringing you back to the pub for Poetics.
Surrealism. It defies logic, rationality and what we perceive as natural. Strange beauty transpires from the most unusual artistic assemblages, combinations and distortions. It has been described as an unleashing of creativity and the subconscious mind. Beyond the works of Picasso, the process emerged from art and literature to other mediums including sculptures, lithography, theater, film and photography. We have explored the movement of surrealism in previous dVerse prompts. Today I’d like to focus specifically on the surreal photography of Erik Johansson.
Erik Johansson is a Swedish photographer and visual artist, now living in Prague, Czech Republic. In his bio, he says that he “seeks to capture ideas rather than moments” and “strives to create a single, realistic image that tells a story, even if it includes elements that seem impossible.” He describes the process of his work on his About page here. Scrolling through his gallery, I found the results to be captivating, each one feeding my muse with possibilities. Perhaps you will be moved as well. Choose an image below that sends you a message, an idea, or a story. There are more photos available on his website using this link.
Note: All gallery images on Erik Johansson’s site are available for personal and non-commercial use only. If you are including an image with your poem, you are required to credit his work with his name and website.
Here’s how to join in:
- Write a poem of any style, inspired by one of the images above or from Erik Johansson’s gallery. Post it to your blog.
- Remember to credit the artist.
- Click on Mr. Linky below to add your name and direct url to your poem.
- Add a link for dVerse on your page so others can find us as well.
- Visit other poets on the list to read their poems and comment.
- Join us at the pub to say hello!

Hi everyone! Thank you so much Mish for hosting with an ekphrastic prompt, especially a surrealistic one! It was a hard choice until I saw two that went well together, I can’t wait to see what everyone makes of these fantastic images.

Hi Kim! 🙂 It is a difficult choice! Combining two of them sounds fantastical. Thanks for joining in.

Welcome wonderful poets! I have warm chocolate chip cookies and your favourite beverage waiting for you on your return from the “surreal”. I’m excited to read where the images took you.

Hello Grace….some cookies and a mug of Earl Grey coming your way.

Thank you. I was tempted to do the office one but maybe I will reserve that for OLN this Thursday.
Mish said:
That would be great. Although I’ve never really worked in an office, I almost chose that one too. So many directions one can take with these images.

I absolutely adore these images – it was really hard to choose one! Fantastic (in every sense of the word!) prompt.
Mish said:
Thank you, Sarah. I know what you mean. It was hard to choose which ones to feature within the prompt! I’m sure there are many more from his site that will grow into poetry. 🙂

Wow. Incredible imagery! Really couldn’t pick just one, so I went with the overall impression that the collection left me. Thank you for spotlighting this excellent artist
Mish said:
My pleasure! Your response will be interesting, I’m sure. 🙂

It sure is a challenge. I was tempted to begin describing what I saw in a given image, but then that felt kind of hollow. Clearly he’s trying to capture an Idea with his image. I didn’t want to try and capture his image with words, but rather an idea. Not sure I was able to do that, but it’s really intriguing.
