Welcome to OpenLinkNight everyone! As you know OpenLinkNight is your opportunity to link 1 poem of your choice as this is no prompt-day. For those who missed the Mr Linky deadline this Tuesday’s poetics or any poetry prompts that you have missed in the past, this is the opportunity to share your poem. Out of courtesy, please link back to dVerse Poets Pub if you are sharing your poem.
In my part of the world, we are in the late stage of summer and earliest of autumn season. My summer flowers are still blooming though some are starting to fade. It is still warm during the day but the cool morning and nights are settling in fast. Summer is just a short season in Canada so we treasure each sun-soaked day, including rainy and cloudy days too.
Late Summer
BY JENNIFER GROTZ
Before the moths have even appeared
to orbit around them, the streetlamps come on,
a long row of them glowing uselessly
along the ring of garden that circles the city center,
where your steps count down the dulling of daylight.
At your feet, a bee crawls in small circles like a toy unwinding.
Summer specializes in time, slows it down almost to dream.
And the noisy day goes so quiet you can hear
the bedraggled man who visits each trash receptacle
mutter in disbelief: Everything in the world is being thrown away!
Summer lingers, but it’s about ending. It’s about how things
redden and ripen and burst and come down. It’s when
city workers cut down trees, demolishing
one limb at a time, spilling the crumbs
of twigs and leaves all over the tablecloth of street.
Sunglasses! the man softly exclaims
while beside him blooms a large gray rose of pigeons
huddled around a dropped piece of bread.

Wild aster, bee balm, hyssop, crisp chrysanthemum
Proclaim bold purple in the pallid dawn,
Asserting there’s more blossoming to come,
More purple in the prickling thistle thorn,
More purple in the valley’s swirling haze;
Even the robin’s shadow on the lawn,
Even your welcome of the dew, your praise,
Proclaim bold purple in the pallid dawn.
Yes, purple is the color of your need
To have your mood made manifest, your final flair
Before October’s culminating leaves exceed
In parting opulence the purple air
Of royalty that radiates about your head,
Your mastery of mourning everywhere
You move to make a purple hymn to hum:
Wild aster, bee balm, hyssop, crisp chrysanthemum.

Good evening poets and thanks to Grace for hosting. I’m having problems posting my poem on WordPress and it may take a while. I look forward to reading all your poems, but it may not be until tomorrow morning. Have fun!

Thank you for hosting, Grace.
Today it seems like the end of summer with the weather a little cooler and breezy, but we’re going to be back to hot in a few days.
Grace said:
Hi Merril. Yes, day time is also getting shorter, with sunset at 8pm, rather than 9pm. Looking forward to enjoying the last warm days of the summer.

Good evening.
Thanks for hosting Grace. I had to get some current frustration out of my head, and I’m pleased I managed to turn it into poetry and share it with you all. 😀

Thank you Grace for hosting – as usual I am late to the pub but better late than never! I have linked to a poem I posted for the Insecure Writers Support Group because I realised that like the Poets Pub, they are also twelve years old this year and the post contains a link back to the poem I wrote for the pub’s celebration back in July which not many people saw – Baker’s Dozen https://how-would-you-know.com/2023/07/a-bakers-dozen.html
Grace said:
Hi Frewin, Thanks for sharing your poem here. There is no need to put your link in the comment section as we have Mr. Linky for all the poetry links to visit and read. Yes, I know about that support group too. Have a good weekend.

Thanks for joining in Yvonne. I think we were all inspired by the blue moon.

Hi Grace – I used Mr Linky but the link in the comment was for a different poem – the one I posted for the Poet’s Pub 12th anniversary which a lot of people missed due to my late posting…
