Lillian here, delighted to host today’s Poetics at dVerse, the virtual pub for poets around the globe.
A PREQUEL is a story or movie containing events that precede those of an existing work. On the movie scene, all the prequels made after the original Star Wars movie come to mind. In our immediate world right here, some time back, Sanaa, who is a frequent pub tender and long time dVerser, read aloud a poem of hers about Medusa during an OLN LIVE session. In it, she described what Medusa was like before her infamous run-in with Athena when her hair was turned into snakes. In essence, she created a prequel to the mythological character, Medusa. You can read it here https://www.adashofsunny.com/treading-along-the-grasses-of-reverie-part-3/
Today, I’d like you to consider famous characters from nursery rhymes, Aesops’ Fables, books you’ve read, or perhaps mythology. And then I’d like you to imagine a previous life for that character, in terms of what they were like before they became famous. For example, just to throw out some ideas: What was King Cole like before he was a King? What about Alice as a toddler, encouraged her to fall down a rabbit hole and ultimately meet the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat and the Queen of Hearts? Or alternatively, how did the Mad Hatter become mad? What is it about Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater’s background that made him become someone who couldn’t keep a wife? Who was the boy who always called wolf and how did he become a kid who did things like that? What was Mrs. Danvers from Rebecca like as a young child? What was Paddington Bear like as a young cub and why did he become an endearing bear to so many, including the late Queen Elizabeth? How did Hercules develop his muscles, and/or why? How did Peter Pan learn to fly? Or what in his past drove him to never want to grow up? You’ve got the idea now. It should be clear to us within your poem, who you are writing this prequel about. Have some fun with this prompt! There is no particular form required for your poem; no particular length or rhyme pattern. You’re simply being asked to think about the possible background of a famous character or mythological figure and write a poem showing a different side to them. It must be a prequel however. It cannot be about what happens to them after they’re famous. What is it about their upbringing, an event, a situation, that made them who they are when we get to know them in their famous setting (nursery rhyme, fable, mythology, book, etc). New to dVerse? Need to be refreshed on the rules? Here’s what to do:
- Write a poem that is a prequel to a particular character from a nursery rhyme, aesop’s fable, book, or mythology. See explanation in prompt above. Be sure it’s clear in the poem, who you’re writing about.
- Post the poem to your blog AND add the exact URL for your poem to Mr. Linky below.
- REMEMBER to either TAG dVerse in your post, or include a link at the end of your poem that leads readers back to dVerse (https://dversepoets.com).
- If you do not TAG or include a link to dVerse at the end of your post, I will gently remind you to do so. After all, this will increase your readership and comments, and others will find dVerse and hopefully join in the fun. If you do not add the TAG or link after my reminder, I will remove your post from Mr. Linky. I do not want to do that! So please do include the TAG or link!

Happy Tuesday, dVersers! Looking forward to reading some prequel poems today! Serving lemon meringue pie, cherry pie, and apple pie today. Check your bartenders’ guide for any drink to accompany your choice and I’ll mix it up for you!

a piece of pie maybe… but it is late so maybe I will keep it for my morning coffee.

I shall cover it for you and it will be delicious with your morning coffee! LOVE your prequel, Bjorn!

Happy Tuesday, Lill, and all you dVerse poets out there. I struggled to pick a character for a prequel and settled on mythology in the end. I had dinner three hours ago and am still full, so just a mocktail of your choice, please Lill.
lillian said:
How about a Cosmopolitan mocktail? Seems like a good choice. I enjoyed your Pandora tale…..I too settled with mythology although I had a pretty good Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater one going to begin with! 🙂

Did you finish it? Maybe you could link up a second poem.

Enjoyed this prompt, which really tested my ability to work with a story already complete. I would love a slice of lemon meringue pie and a cup of black tea (no milk please). Thanks, Lill.

Lemon meringue pie and black tea coming right up! Glad you enjoyed the prompt! Just from the first 5 posted, I think we’re going to get some good variety!

I have no doubt about that. Looking forward to reading everyone’s flights of prequel fancy!

Lemon merengue pie, please! An espresso sounds lovely .. do we have a machine? Now I have to put nose to the grindstone, choose a character and work on a poem. Thanks for a clever challenge, Lillian.

Lemon meringue pie for me please! 🥰 Late to the party .. but hopefully my poem will make up for it. I was trying to decide which mythological character to write about!
A fantastic prompt, Lillian and thank you so much for the kind mention of my Medusa poem 🩷🩷

A very cute idea for a prompt, Lillian. Thanks for hosting. Hope you are enjoying sunny California! I think will be Tom Thumb’s little brother and have a cherry instead of plumb pie along with a big scoop of ice cream!

Glad you like the prompt, Dwight. Looking forward to reading your post!

Thank you. I wll see what I can come up with.

Closing the door for this evening….but fear not dVersers! As I always do, leaving the key under the potted Ficus to the right of the pub door. Let yourself in….pies in the fridge. Help yourself to a slice and leave a prequel poem on the bar. Just be sure to lock the door and replace the key as you exit. I’ll be back in the AM with a coffee mug in my hand, to read all the new posts. Looking forward to it! The diversity her thus far has been amazing…..and some that made me laugh out loud! THANK YOU and see you tomorrow!

OMG, I just saw this and probs can’t get a poem squeezed out before sleepy time (corp job requires an early wake-up call), but I just had to recognize this question in the prompt, “What was Mrs. Danvers from Rebecca like as a young child?” Wow! I might dream of this, or maybe it would be a nightmare. Great prompt! Whether or not I can conjure a prequel poetic piece, I will definitely read the magic from the other pub-goers, so for this, I’d like to order a Bailey’s and Coffee.
lillian said:
Hi Kim! Good to see you here and glad you like the prompt! Do know, the prompt will be open to post to until Thursday at 3 PM EST. Alternatively, you can write a poem for this prompt and then post it at any dVerse OLN (open link night) Thursday! You can check the calendar above (in the header of every dVerse prompt page) in d’Schedule to find out the next Thursday OLN session. Many folks use the OLN days to post a poem for a prompt they liked but didn’t have time to get their poem in before the prompt closed.

Thank you for hosting Lillian. This turned out to be a fun one to write. I went way down the rabbit hole to write it. 🐰😏👍🏼✌🏼🫶🏼

Sorry Lil — that first link I posted here that reads “rob kistner – the”…please erase that one. Although both links lead to the correct same poem, I’d rather have the second one be the one that’s visible. Thank you. I’m sorry my friend. My head these days?🫠

I’ll check it out Rob and make sure the right one is up. Not to worry. GOOD to see you here. We missed you at OLN LIVE on Saturday. FYI: I’m in San Diego till March 7 so I joined OLN LIVE at 7 AM here — ugh! BUT, with the new platform, we had 20 people and it lasted about 90 minutes….so you could probably log in next time (February 17) any time between 10 and 11:20 AM EST. I’ll be hosting on Feb 17 so hope to see you there!

Oh Lil — that is so early in the morning for me. I just have a hard time. I don’t sleep well and sometimes I’m not asleep though 3 — 4 o’clock in the morning, so to try to get up and be alert at 7 AM my time… I don’t know? I’ll try to be there on 17th. It’s the day before my 77th birthday on the 18th — so maybe I’ll make it a special visit. Thank you for reaching out my friend. 🙂✌🏼🫶🏼

Hi Rob! I’m having trouble posting a comment on your link, the wheel of dome just goes round and round, so I’m adding it here. Jefferson Airplane told us to ask Alice, and I’m glad you did in this prequel (or is it a sequel?). I think I had some of her Wonderland Risotto in the distant past!
lillian said:
Hah….Wonderland Risotto….I just like the sound of that!
Rob Kistner said:
Sorry that you had trouble at first but I’m glad to see that you did get in. Thanks for visiting.🙂✌🏼🫶🏼

Good to see you here, Paul! Glad you like the prompt. I’m on to read all those that have come in since I shut the door for the evening.
lillian said:
Hello dVersers! Door is wide open and I’m awake with a cup of coffee in hand. San Diego time – it’s just 9 AM here.
PROMPT WILL BE OPEN ON MR. LINKY until 3 PM Thursday! And remember, if you don’t get your poem in on time, you can always save it and post it to a future Thursday OLN (Open Link Night)!

Loved this prompt idea! After running through a few possibilities in my head I thought then to the Raven from “The Raven”. So I took a shot at that.
lillian said:
Nice to see you here Stephen!!!! Have been out and about the city of San Diego today…so back to read mores posts now. I think you’re new to dVerse? Welcome! We’re a fun group with prompts on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and once a month, a LIVE session on Saturdays at 10 AM EST. It’s a great time to see and hear folks read their poem. Will mention this in my reply to your poem post as well!
Stephen J Frankenberry said:
Yes, I am new here and already really enjoying my time. Looking forward to the new prompts. I will be moving into a new place not too far from where I am at now in Poughkeepsie NY at the end of next month so I’ve be living a bit stressy lately. But once I get myself settled in there I will also look forward to the LIVE sessions. Thanks so much for the welcome. Nothing better than a “Welcome!”.

Thanks for the extra encouragement, Lillian, it helped me get past the finish line. I’ll take a couple of tasty dog biscuits, to share with the characters in my poem, and a sparkling rosé for me. 😎
