Hello to All who are gathered here today in the dVerse Universe, a site of pubtalk and poetry. This Monday is where You and Your Muse are prompted to write a Quadrille. The name for the quadrille form is taken from an 18th Century dance, but as you may know, it is also dVerse’ poetic form of just 44 words (not counting the title) and includes one word the host provides to you. Today your host is me, Lisa, at the ready to serve drinks and snacks from the magic cupboard.
Over 2024, I’ve been reading Bono’s (2022) book, _Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story_. It’s not a book to be read quickly. For fans of U2, it’s essential reading. To learn the insider information on the lyrics and the context they were written within has been a deeply enriching experience. Hoping to have it finished by the end of the year.
The title of the book highlights a state of mind I’ve been trying to cultivate over the last couple of weeks. It speaks of not only surrendering to the now but to acknowledging we are all in this one story together. We are with each other. To exist within a feeling of community is a beautiful thing, from a cosmic level to here, at the poets pub.
The acknowledgment leads me to today’s prompt word: with.
With is such an inclusive word that it is probably in a zillion poems. I needed a starting point to narrow the field and found it in a list of influential women poets over time and over the globe. It was educational, enlightening, and enjoyable to read these poets, looking for ones that included the word.

Most have hopefully heard of TED talks. Their website describes its organization as, “TED is a nonprofit that shares educational and inspiring ideas with billions of people worldwide to catalyze change across individuals, communities and ultimately, humanity.” Born in 1983, Jenny Zhang offers a youthful perspective that is brash and powerful in, “ted talk.” I imagine that Jenny imagined herself up on the stage and what she would say if she were there:
from ted talk by Jenny Zhang
would it be so wrong to wish
everyone with global entry be grounded
until extinction is off the table
I don’t think I can date another
digital nomad or a normie with a dog
who doesn’t know what it’s like
to be too poor to buy their way
out of disaster
Next is an excerpt from an achingly beautiful love poem.
from A Love Song from the North by Sarojini Naidu
When swift to my side came the feet of my lover
With stars of the dusk and the dawn?
I see the soft wings of the clouds on the river,
And jewelled with raindrops the mango-leaves quiver,
And tender boughs flower on the plain…..
Another excerpt from another achingly beautiful poem.
from Leda by H.D. (Hilda Doolittle)
Through the deep purple
of the dying heat
of sun and mist,
the level ray of sun-beam
has caressed
the lily with dark breast,
and flecked with richer gold
its golden crest.
The final excerpt describes watching flowers bloom; the poem ends with a wish.
from The Metier of Blossoming by Denise Levertov
Fully occupied with growing—that's
the amaryllis. Growing especially
at night: it would take
only a bit more patience than I've got
to sit keeping watch with it till daylight;

Greetings All! The pub is open!
I will be with you soon 🙂
Welcome, Dear Bjorn. I’m glad 🙂
Good evening poets, and thank you for hosting Lisa. I like the idea of having a preposition as a prompt word, and I hope you like my quadrille.
Welcome, Kim. Glad you like the preposition, leaving it wide open. I’m sure I will like your quadrille.
thanks Lisa I had fun with this one!!
Welcome, Laura. Glad you had fun with it. Headed over to the trail right now…
An interesting prompt, Lisa. I think I would like a strawberry milkshake with whipped cream and a cherry on top!
Welcome, Dwight. Happy you find the prompt interesting. A strawberry milkshake with whipped cream and a cherry on top coming right up. Cheers!
I am intrigued and feel I might actually deliver ON the prompt day!
It’s Monday so I’ll be good. Nah. A nice glass of Chardonnay, please.
Welcome, Dale. Happy you are intrigued and will be looking for what you may come up with maybe on prompt day 😉 A nice glass of Chardonnay coming right up. Cheers!
Yes… With has so many possibilities! Thank you kindly. I’ll bring the bread 😉
Dale, that raisin bread looked so delicious! You may inspire me to make bread. My taste buds demand it.
It really is not bad at all! Not too sweet and next time I will rehydrate the raisins!
You inspired me to write a gruesome little quadrille. Arsenic, please!
Noooooo.☠️
Welcome, Melissa! Don’t worry, the arsenic isn’t for her.
Oh thank goodness.🙏🏻😅
😁
I like to share….
Welcome, Nolcha. LOL on the arsenic.
🤣
hi all
turn of your big lights and see what the twinkling fairy lights take you.
its dark in here tonight.
love rog
Welcome, Rog. I don’t have any twinkling lights up, so it will be straight dark.
Excited to be back after a hiatus due to work… I’ll take a fruity beachy drink, because I’m on vacation by the shores of Mississippi. Thanks for hosting and for a wonderful prompt.
Welcome, Kim, and welcome back. My pleasure on hosting. On the shores of the Mississippi? Been on a riverboat yet? How about a Pina Colada with a cherry on top? Yummy, I’m making 2, one for me and one for you. Cheers!
Great thoughts, great song. (K)
Welcome, Kerfe. Thanks much.
Hi Li. Wonderful selection of poems you have shared. Thanks for hosting.
Welcome, Punam. Thank you much, they are gems aren’t they. My pleasure on hosting 🙂
So they are. My pleasure. 😊
Hi Lisa, thanks for the prompt
Welcome, Robbie. You are very welcome 🙂
💜
Thank you for hosting, Li. A great choice of word which we use regularly but when prompted to use it, it eludes. 🙂
Welcome, Kitty 🙂 My pleasure on hosting, and glad you like the word choice. Understand what you mean about “with.”

Hello lovely Lisa and I’ll have a lime-blossom tea (tilleul) please, “for my nerves, dear” as my Nanna Beattie might have said. With nothing on the side but a smile.
Thank you, what a winsome and withsome prompt. I’m glad I had the wherewithal to meet it.
Sort of, although not without a bit of snarling at WordPress, with which I get increasingly frustrated…
Back to feast on others’ withy willowy words later – why didn’t I run with basketry as a theme?
Welcome, Kathy! Such a wonderful comment that makes me smile 🙂 One cup of tilleul coming right up. Cheers!
SLURP… Cheers!

Many thanks Li – it is wonderful to be with you, with all 🙂 Loving the choice of word especially in these times. A double whiskey please 🙂
Welcome, Paul. Good to see you, and appreciate the kind words. Setting up two double whiskeys, one for you one for me. Cheers!
❤️
Hi Lisa,
A wonderful poem…thanks for the prompt! Book by Bono sounds like an interesting read. A couple years ago, I chose “surrender” as my word for the year 🙂
Welcome, Lynn. Thanks on the poem and happy you like the prompt. Bono is a brilliant artist and deep thinker. Did your word for the year help you?
Yes, when I reminded myself to surrender my emotions and circumstances to God 🙂
Hello, Lisa. Thank you for hosting and prompting me to pen 44 words. I noticed there’s some double whiskeys going around… I would have one WITH you, please and thank you.
Welcome, D. My pleasure on hosting and glad I inspired you to pen your wonderful poem. Setting up 2 more double whiskeys, one for you and one for me. With Cheers!
Sorry, Gaia, I was not able to comment on your poem, but I enjoyed it very much. Sensuous and sensual not to mention merging with the weather’s offerings.

Love the word, you have picked. ‘With’, is an inclusive word, indeed!
