Welcome to Poetics! Melissa here from Mom With a Blog. While there are a myriad shows to watch today, I find a familiar comfort in programs of yore. I watched some kids’ shows, but I mostly gravitated towards shows for more mature audiences. I Dream of Jeannie, The Honeymooners, Three’s Company, Laverne & Shirley, Bewitched, to name a few. My all-time favorite is The Golden Girls. Fun fact: I even have a tattoo of Estelle Getty on my right foot, and one of Lucille Ball on my left.

In retrospect, there are many things no longer considered acceptable in society today. Oppositely, some long for the modesty of earlier times. Each show had its cast of characters, with their familiar attire, their catchphrases, and so on. There was predictability of plots. For instance, Chef George Geary speculates that close to 100 of his cheesecakes were featured on The Golden Girls through its seven seasons.

You’ve probably guessed that today we are writing about our favorite TV shows. Political commentaries, roleplaying character dialogues, recounting of a favorite episode in poetic form, you have free reign within the realm of the tube. Want to rant about the idiot box, talk to us in green screen, include some slang words for television (baby-sitter, boob tube, telly)? The world is your oyster, 🦪 just include a TV show, or two. Any show will do, it does not have to be one mentioned in this post. I hope to see some shows from around the world and that I’ve never heard of!🤞🏻

Fun trivia:

  • Bea Arthur hated wearing shoes, and she had it written into her contract on The Golden Girls that she could walk around barefoot on the set, so long as she promised not to sue producers if she was injured because of it.
  • Lucille Ball was the first woman to appear on one of the three major television networks while pregnant.
  • William Frawley, who played Fred Mertz on I Love Lucy, had it written into his contract that he would not work when the Yankees were in the World Series; his character was written out of two episodes because of it.
  • The popular theme song for I Dream of Jeannie did not come into play until the second season.
  • In an episode during I Dream of Jeannie’s first season, the show featured a live lion.
  • Before starring on The Brady Bunch, Maureen McCormick, who played Marcia Brady, made two cameos on the Bewitched show.
  • The Honeymooners aired on WABD channel 5 in New York City from 1951 to 1952, prior to being picked up by CBS in 1955, where it ran for 39 episodes.
  • Laverne and Shirley made their TV debut on an episode of Happy Days.
