Greetings, poetic peoples! De Jackson, aka WhimsyGizmo here. It’s time again for that pithiest of prompts, the Quadrille – when we pen poems of just 44 words, including one word we here a dVerse provide. And today, since the original meaning of the word “quadrille” was a dance, I’ve got a hootenanny of a prompt for you…
This week, I want you to preen your poetic feathers, build yourself a comfortable writing nest, and explore the word HOOT.

Now, obviously, you can write some onomatopoeia about an owl. But you could also hoot your own horn, give us a hoot and a holler, dance your way to a real hootenanny, speak of the history of Hooterville, regale us with a dining experience at Hooters, or invent some fabulous wordsmash that no one’s come up with yet. Who’s up for designing a hoot-suit? Making a 21-hoot salute? Hey, we’re all in cahoots here – and our delight is abso-hoot, when you have some fun with words.
…which was a specialty of Shel Silverstein.

And an art form, for Shakespeare…

Midsummer Night’s Dream, William Shakespeare
This is a great book! And the movie’s good, too.

Here’s hoping this prompt is a real hoot!
New to the Q? Here’s what to do:
Give a hoot about the rules and write us a poem of exactly 44 words (not counting the title), including some semblance of the word hoot. Post your poem on your blog, and link up using Mr. Linky below. Then have yourself a real hootenanny ’round the internet, as you read and comment on others’ poems. And remember: the Quadrille is up all week! So come back to read and write some more!

Some musical sensations for your poetic inspiration:
Hoot Mon (Bing Crosby):
The Night We Called it a Day (Bob Dylan):
Or perhaps you prefer Frank Sinatra:
Take the Money and Run, Steve Miller Band
And of course, there’s Hootie & The Blowfish
And just for fun…
Woodsy Owl:
Who all’s old enough to remember this guy? **raises hand**
Greetings, amazing poets! “Owl” be here off and on all day with treats, cocktails, and cocktails. Happy poeming!
PS: Who’s got the Woodsy song stuck in their head now? You’re welcome. 😉
Good evening all, and thank you for hosting, De – what a hoot! I almost forgot that daylight saving is earlier in the US than in the UK – I had to check on Google! Still poorly and waiting for the hospital to get back to me, so won’t be around for long. But I will be back in the morning to read and comment.
I’m so sorry you’re still not feeling well, Kim. Praying you up with a hoot and a holler. Take care of yourself.
Thank you very much, De.
Oh Kim….so sorry to hear you’re still feeling poorly. Hoping the hospital can figure out the problem and you’ll be feeling much better soon!
Thank you kindly, Lill. I’ve just been through some tests and am waiting for an endoscopy.
so sorry to hear. hoping you feel better soon. hugs.
It is such a difference when the prompt go up already at 8PM…. I will probably stay a little longer before bedtime today.
Hi, Bjorn. We had our daylight savings here in America on Saturday night. I set the prompt like I normally do. Hope I did it right. 😉
It was perfectly correct… we are not on DST yet
What a fun prompt, De, though my poem took a serious turn somehow! Thank you for hosting.
Loved it, Dora. Cheers!
Hoots to De and All. Thanks for a fun prompt. I’ll take a hot rooibos and peppermint tea with a splash of Carolan’s (Bailey’s cheaper cousin) please!
Loves me some Carolan’s. 😉 Comin’ right up, Lisa.
De thanks much. It really hits the spot. Cheers!
p.s. Hoot sounds like a good book. From wiki:
Hoot is a 2002 children’s mystery/suspense novel by Carl Hiaasen. The story takes place in Florida, where new arrival Roy makes two oddball friends and a bad enemy. Roy joins an effort to stop construction of a pancake house which would destroy a colony of burrowing owls who live on the site. The book won a Newbery Honor award in 2003
This was a MUCH beloved book in my kids’ childhoods. We read it many, many times. The movie is fun, too. Actually, all of his books for kids/YA are wonderful.
❤
A great prompt 🦉
Thanks so much. 🙂 Happy poeming!
What a fun prompt, and we definitely need to keep creating fun. Yes, I remember, “Give a hoot don’t pollute.” I could sing the whole song. It is crazy what my brain remembers.
Ali, I am convinced that this is why I cannot remember names. My brain is full. Of allllll the late 70’s and 80’s jingles, PSAs and songs.
Hi De and others! Great word!
Gonna post and scoot.
Will be back tomorrow to catch up.
Drive-by poeming is always welcome! 🙂 Cheers!
What’s a good hootch for a crapshooter? I’ll take two – one for my conscience, and the other for my stomach.
😉 Comin’ right up, on the “double.”
Thanks for hosting, De. What with the clocks jumping ahead an hour AND the 3 hour time difference between San Diego and Boston, I still let the clock get by me and so am an hour late to the pub opening. However, I was so pleased to see “hoot” as the word given we’d recently been to the marvelous Coast Discovery Center in Chula Vista, CA — about a 45 minute train ride and a bit of walking from San Diego. We saw the most amazing bald eagle, several other kinds of eagles, and this small burrowing owl….plus many sea creatures. So was very glad to write for the prompt!
I need to get some other tasks done here…..as our two grandkids (now 16 and 18) will be joining us tomorrow for a few days! Sadly, the ever steady San Diego sun will be behind clouds the entire time they’re here! A rare occurrence and unfortunately, timing for their visit is crummy! Ah well…..we shall have a fabulous time anyway!
Thanks again for hosting!
Hi, Lill! In my experience, San Diego is gorgeous in all kinds of weather. Enjoy your grand kids. Loved your owl poem! Hubby and I have an owl experience planned in Scotland in April, and I’m hoping these cuties are in the mix.

I wrote a poem for it, but missed the deadline. 😕
The Quadrille is open all week. And I just checked Mr. Linky, still working! 🙂
Oh, okay. I thought it was for the latest prompt, Dora hosted.
Dora’s prompt is open for another 23 hours or so. The Quadrille is open through Friday, I believe. Just be sure you link up to the correct Mr. Linky. 😉
I didn’t know it worked that way. 😊 Thanks!
A fun prompt. I want to be in cahoots with hooting poeteers. Thanks, Da. I’ll try to give the hoot a try. Blessings.
