Welcome to Poetics. Melissa here from Mom With a Blog. I hope you’ll enjoy today’s ekphrastic prompt from the virtual poetry pub.

Georgia O’Keeffe was an American modernist painter, known for her paintings of flowers and landscapes. She used bold colors in her paintings, which often depicted their subjects in a closeup style.

Georgia O’Keeffe, A Piece of Wood I (1942), oil on canvas, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, gift of The Burnett Foundation

Her work revolved heavily around nature, showcasing it in its simplicity and with all its idiosyncrasies.

Georgia O’Keeffe, The Black Iris (1926), oil on canvas, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, gift of The Burnett Foundation

In 1946, O’Keeffe was the first woman to be featured with a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Georgia O’Keeffe, Three Women (1918), watercolor and graphite on paper, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, gift of Gerald & Kathleen Peters

Today I’d like us to dive into a world fascinated with color and detail. Choose one of the paintings featured in this post and compose an ekphrastic poem. (An ekphrastic poem is a descriptive poem about / inspired by an artwork.)

Georgia O’Keeffe, Long Lake, Colorado; Adrienne Brugger Sketchbook (1917), watercolor and graphite on paper, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, gift of The Georgia O’Keeffe Foundation

After you’ve written your poem, you are more than welcome to come back and write another. There’s one more thing: I’d like you to incorporate a handful of the terms in the grid (found at end of post) into your poem somewhere.

If you’re new, here is how to join us:
