Egon Schiele was an Austrian Expressionist painter known for painting with expressive lines and twisted figures, depicting psychologically intense self-portraits and other images, and exploring sexuality through his art.

Schiele had somewhat of a trouble childhood, and died at the young age of 28 after contracting Spanish flu. During his short lifetime, Schiele was greatly influenced by and mentored by Gustav Klimt.

Though well-known for his depictions of the human form and self-portraiture, Schiele was a gifted landscape painter as well. Even in childhood, he was drawn to observing nature and recording the things he saw. Sunflowers were among his favorite to paint. Perhaps he was inspired by Van Gogh.

His painting, Houses with Laundry (Suburb II) sold at Sotheby’s in 2011 for £24.7 million ($40.1 million USD). This was the artist’s most expensive piece sold to date. The Leopold Museum in Vienna houses the largest collection of Schiele’s artwork in the world.

For today’s prompt, I’d like us to explore some of the landscapes Schiele brought to life in his paintings. Choose one of the artworks in this post, and compose a poem in any form of your choosing. Incorporate details of the place or scene, even if you don’t write your poem specifically about the work.
