I had a front row seat and a beer. It was my first time ever to attend a poetry slam. Small place, crowded, it was hot, the air thick with expectation and excitement. I was close enough to see their quivering lips as they stepped into the light, up to the mic and.. the words poured forth..
At slams, there are no stage props allowed, no music, pictures, effects – it’s just the poet and their text, just him or her – and the words they spun alone in their room, now ready to share with the world…
I feel this magic here as well when poets from around the world gather on a tuesday evening to bring their words and their hearts…thanks to each of you for doing this so bravely each week..and if you do it with quivering lips, I think that makes it all the more fascinating…
So – stage is set – mic open…looking forward to seeing you on the trail!
Here’s how it works…

Staying with my space sonnets, this is my first sonnet. It isn’t numbered, or you might call it #0. I do not number it because it is in rhyming couplet ie not Shakespearean. I wrote this back in 1972, when the picture was taken. If you are interested, read more in the annotation on the blog. Thanks.
Hi Claudia! I’m in on the ground floor and all that. Chocolate milk for me, please.
if chocolate milk is the secret for your fabulous poetry shay…i will get you a liter mug…smiles
loving the pub 🙂
and we love that you’re here david..
Nice to join you all again. I look forward to some reading…
Drinks in for another great poetry slam… virtual or not.. the company’s rocking…
so did you bring the baguette becky…? smiles
is there a better place to be on a tuesday evening…?
welcome everyone…looking forward to another great night of poetry
Ginger tea for me, not up to par. I think a little poetry from quivering lips is just what the Dr. ordered.
fennel tea for me please..smiles
Hi, I’m sort of combining two dVerse events this week in that I wrote a new sestina after Hedgewitch got me thinking about them with form for all. (I had posted an old one for that link.)
Don’t have any props, except for my little drawings, but I have to say I find the audio/visual material people post kind of interesting. (And I liked the City of New Orleans!) But I agree, Claudia, re the excitement.
Yet to attend a slam, though I’ve been to a couple of readings. They couldn’t compare to the poetry we see each week here, Claudia.
So glad to see you here this afternoon/evening. Earlier today I referred to you as my (much much younger) poetic fairy godmother. I feel there’s a lot of truth to that.
Cheers, my dear! See you around out there.
haha – just read grandmother instead of godmother….and started to feel really old…haha….need to get my glasses…
Goodness, you scared me! I had to go make sure I didn’t make that mistake. And that’s because I AM old! 😉
God, I haven’t been to a slam in 15 years … one of those under-a-rock poets who just comes out to soak up the dark energy of cyberpoetry at The Pub! If anything, cyber poetry is the absolute opposite of slams — not one verbal cue to drive the words home. The words have to do all the heavy lifting! So heave ho and trope-a-dope … … Brendan
smiles brendan…your words are so able to do that heavy lifting…
Quivering all the way Claudia! Life is only exciting in the throes of passion….. Of course you know that I love your passion and am wondering which of your delicious treats spewed from quivering lips at that slam! Would love to have been there…..
smiles…was only listening…not performing…this time…smiles
What a vivid feel of your poetry slam you gave us, Claudia. Not sure I’d *ever* have the courage to do that. Thanks for hosting tonight.
I’m all linked up, but we are out the door on some vital errands–that is to say, an exciting dog walk followed by a cholesterol-laden meal at the colorful Steak and Catfish Barn up the road apiece. If neither of us has a coronary, I’ll be back to read the open link slam this evening.
think we should turn the pub into a colorful Steak and Catfish Barn…hmmmm…i’m getting hungry….
Hi, all. I’m in. Nice to join the crowd again. Barkeep, I’ll have my usual.
patti – great to see you
So very freaking happy to be here…and I’m reading too! Thanks to all for last weeks comments…I owe you all big time! Claudia, thanks for setting the stage with such an awesome vibe…I’m diving in!
woohoo – i’m already soakin’ wet and it’s wonderful..
Thanks, Claudia. Haven’t been to a slam, but braved driving into Hartford, CT for a poetry festival where I enjoyed Terence Hayes reading last summer…ironically on the night a tornado touched down briefly and ripped some hugh old trees out of the ground on the Hillside Estate. It happened before we arrived and they didn’t cancel the event, just moved indoors! The power of poetry!
wow…there’s power in poetry indeed…
HI Claudia and everyone! Yuhoo!!!! Another amazing night to enjoy words.
Shame I have to go bed in short but i’ll try to visist as many as possible
thanks for another beautiful post and chance at d’verse

I have to run off to teach but I look forward to spending the evening will you all. Thanks to all the dVerse crew and especially Claudia for making this my favorite place to spend Tuesday nights. Thanks to all the wonderfully talented poets who provide so much sustenance for us all.
happy teaching anna (first i read you had to run off to the beach….and was already getting heavily envious….haha..)
If only, the nearest beach is about a thousand miles away – I live in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado :).
Been away for a while, but pleased to be back. Poem from me this week is very relevant to September. Now off to read the work of others. Kind regards to all at dVersePoets, James.
glad to see you james…running behind in my rounds but will be around soon to see you!
It’s that time again. Thank goodness there is only a virtual mic, I would for sure have trembling lips if I had to read aloud to a room full of people. LOL
Thanks gang!
you never know what happens next here…just saying…smiles
I missed last week, but I’m glad to be back this week. Hate to miss out on all the fun. Thanks Claudia for hosting!

Glad to be back at the Pub with all my poet friends. I missed you. I’m reposting a poem that has special meaning to me today, as my added notes will explain. Hugs to you all. Now, about a drink? Victoria
oh victoria…we missed you as well…so good to have you back – i bet your drink is well deserved after all the hard work during the last few weeks…cheers victoria!
yay! victoria is back (dramatic pause to do the happy dance) welcome home friend…
THANK YOU Claudia . I was happy to have had the time to do this.
Thanks for hosting Claudia! This is such a wonderful way of reading and sharing poetry.
I’ve never been to a “real” open mic night, so I’m extra thankful for the Poets’ Pub. 🙂 ❤
Here is a tribute I wrote for Shel Silverstein’s Birthday.

I posted a double acrostic about community. I hope you all enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it. In the process of writing it, I found a great site called Word Hippo that allows you to find words that begin or end with a specific letter, as well as synonyms, antonyms, etc. Peace, Linda
thanks for hosting, claudia! i’m glad for the opportunity you all give us to share in a virtual poetry slam…
Glad to be at dverse pub tonight. (It is night time in the UK)
Hope to be a regular customer:)
warm welcome in the pub Adura – and a beautiful poem you brought to the table…have a look around…meet the people and if you got questions….you’ll find me right behind the bar…smiles

ooooh! may i have a chocolate milk, too, please? and a bendable straw? {smile} thank you, Claudia! *hugs*
haha dani…i really think chocolate milk should be slurped with the lips right at the rim of the cup and the tip of the nose touching the surface of the milk froth…just saying…
ok poets..after midnite over here already and i need some beauty sleep…have fun tonight …see you in the morning..
Very late to the party today, work has a lot of nerve getting in the way of open link day!
BUt glad to be here just the same…
Blogspot seems to have lost its marbles and keeps giving me error messages (at multiple sites) if you’re on Blogspot apparently I can’t make comments tonight, sorry.
I’m linked in, but will be a bit before I can get around. See you all in a little while.
Hi, my first time here! I posted a work I wrote last week, but I hope to have a new poem up for next time. I’m glad I stumbled upon this place. I keep looking for poetry blogs that host events like this. Always so much fun. =)
welcome nick…good to see you at the pub

My lips always quiver when I submit poetry here, but here I am trying to be a brave poet.
Guinness draft fer me, barkeep. The head is the test of how well you pour, of course…
Then on to the poetry. So much to read, too little time! But a pleasure…
Keep ’em coming! ( ;0=}
I’m beat tonight everyone–back for more tomorrow though. Loved what I’ve read so far.
Lovely entry, Claudia… I think I shall meander the crowd with a glass of wine or two, cheers ~
Thanks, Claudia! Great description of the poetry slam. I always enjoy reciting mine (must remember to put audio on my submissions). The air gets thick with all the emotions.
I’m back on my own this week (Matt’s turn waits until the next one), with a little memory of an outdoor festival from some time ago. Looking forward to reading up on everyone’s submissions tomorrow (Wed)!
I highlighted my daughter’s poem this week. Thanks for hosting – I will be swinging around in the morning to read some links.

Mine was a spontaneous outburst.
Sorry to say I seem unable to post on Blogger 2-nite. I’ve seen some fine poems that would not permit me to share a word of praise. Another Guinness, barkeep! Enough to drive me to the brewery!
I tried a different way of writing (for me) so I am very much wondering how people will respond to it.
sneaked into the pub in the early morning…unwashed and uncombed…haha…had some poetry with my breakfast and off to work now…
Stopping in and out for readings today. Nothing new to offer really. Last poems still up from Sestina and Poetics on my blogs. Haven’t had a new or fresh thought. Might need some single malt straight to kick my brain in…Lavagulin perhaps — neat. I’ll sip it while perusing some poetry today along with some nice black coffee. I know there are some sparkling words on the bar tops and I’m eager to drink them in too.
OK – I’ll hook up my haiku sestina – for those who might want to peruse it. It’s not any fun having nothing up.
Good morning everyone…enjoying my journey through your verse with my morning cup of coffee…we are open all day until midnite tonight…enjoy your visits to each other
thank you for all you do to promote us here…I appreciate you though I’m always late for the parade…i try to post here weekly…fun to read others work too…thanks for the avenue…great poets here…..
typing w/ one hanf and a hradfull of med….i re-entered my Sestina. i’m going to be ok. jist numb hand. love this group.
Good to see that your writer’s spirit is alive and well. Not sure I could be that legible with one hand post op on meds–not sure I’m that legible some days straight. ;_) Hope you get both your wings back soon.
Very late to the party…..not too late to have a drink at the pub, I hope? I think I’ll sit for awhile and enjoy everyone’s great poetry.
I seem to have blown Mr. Linky’s deadline. Sso here’s my LInk: Batty Limerick. Thnaks!
