Wow, it seems like only a few days ago I was sitting at my computer composing a new intro for Open Link Night #14. But that’s how time can get away from you if you don’t pay attention. Or you don’t have someone interested in to remind you.
Which brings me to our discussion for today, the loneliness of the writing life. Now don’t get me wrong, I love the time I spend alone with my notebook or the keyboard. It is the glorious nexus of isolation, imagination and spiritual fulfillment that makes life special for me, the mope behind the poet guy you see here and on my blog.
The times between the transcendent hazes of creativity can be a different kind of alone, though. Many of us don’t have similarly afflicted persons close to them, family or friends, teachers or poetaster parole officers (Ooh, TMI, Joe), with whom we can relate, commiserate or congregate. That’s where social media and web entities such as dVerse Poets Pub come to the rescue. They came to mine.
It’s through the clouds and buzz of zeroes and ones that I have been informed I really am a poet, that I have met other poets, learned more of craft, and made some relationships that have enriched my life beyond measure. I didn’t have to reach out, nor did the poets and writers with whom I have connected have to reach out to me. It was all quite organic.
And that’s the wonder of all this. You can be as active or quiet as you wish to be. It’s all cool here at the pub. So welcome in, throw your poem up here on the wall, check out the offerings of all or some of the rest of our constituent creative word weavers. Or, just leave your poem folded under your coaster for your server to pick up. That’s cool, too.
Oh, by the way, my name’s Joe. (Extends hand and – believe it or not – smiles) Glad to see you here tonight. What’ll YOU have?
Here’s the menu:
- Post a poem to your blog,
- Link your poem to dVerse (1 per blog, please) by clicking on the Mr.Linky button below.
- This opens a new screen where you’ll enter your information, and where you also choose links to read. Once you have pasted your poem’s blog url and entered your name, click Submit. Don’t worry if you don’t see your name right away of if you’re not the first name there. That honor inevitably belongs to Anthony Desmond.
- Don’t forget to let your readers know where you’re linking up and encourage them to participate by including a link to dVerse in your blog post. (Something I STILL often forget to do, even after writing this.)
- Visit as many other poems as you like or can, commenting as you like or can, as well.
- Spread the word on the poems you enjoy if you’d like. Feel free to tweet and share on the social media of your choice. As I said, it’s all cool as Claudia here.
Hi Joseph and friends
Hice so nice to be back at posting and reading great poetic stuff
Enjoy!!! 🙂
I can’t believe it. I thought I was first, but am at least in the top 10. Yeah!
LOL. As I noted in the “menu,” Laurie, unless your name is Anthony Desmond, it’s well nigh impossible to be first. The young man is a legend around here for his quick posting trigger as much as his awesome verse.
So glad to see you tonight, Laurie.
Happy open link night!!!
Hi everybody! Now that I’ve posted I’m off to the grocery store with 30,000 others to do my Thanksgiving shopping. I’ll check back later if I survive.
oy, hope you survive that…
Hello all! Nice to be here and reading all your fantastic offerings. Enjoy!.
http://adura-ojo.blogspot.com/2010/04/famine.html
Thanks for hosting Joe. Cool intro. I’m sharing an oldie this week, a personal favorite that hasn’t been shared around much. Thanks!
That’s great, Steve! Oldies are fine with me. I love nothing more than a 16 year old single malt, myself. 😉
Hi Joe, Thanks for serving tonight. Wishing you and all our guests a wonderful holiday, a brilliant new week, and thanking them for writing, linking and sharing. It is gratifying having such a wealth of riches to read each week. Everyone’s work is getting better and when I can’t get to everyone I want to read I feel the poorer for it. Hope you have a wonderful time here at the pub. The entire staff is happy to have you. Welcome!
smiles. have a lovely thanksgiving gay!
Thank you, lovely lady, for lending your intelligence, knowledge, and grace to this and every evening here at dVerse.
I’m in the first 10, this has to be a record for me!
Evening all, already read some fantastic poems, looking like a great night 🙂
Fantastic, Abi! Once again, even hosting, I’m a wee bit behind the curve. I’m on my way over to your poem in a minute. Did you bring any cake? 😉
Joe, thoughtful invite to the pub, today. I find that, even in the midst of a crowd (maybe especially) we are alone. And yet, we are together, supporting one another in this divine work of creating poetry. Thank you for allowing me into your space. And thanks to all of you who come to the pub. Amazing grace!
As I said, Victoria, without you all, I’d still be a miserable old cuss who scribbled into the darkness. You’re so right. We lift each other to heights we couldn’t imagine we’d reach alone.
Feelin a beatnik vibe going down here at the pub. Way cool, Poet Joe…quite groovy actually…Peace and Poetic Love to all…(you’ve saved my soul more than once!)
My dear, dear friend Natasha, I’ve said it many times and I’ll repeat it here. Without you and your tireless support and friendship, there’d be no gray-haired dude in an apron spouting glib goofiness tonight. You’re my North Star and you’ve always set me upon the right course.
Looking forward to finding some more great talent this week! I love visiting the Pub! Thanks! Happy Sharing!!!
Kellie
I love this line, Joseph: “It is the glorious nexus of isolation, imagination and spiritual fulfillment”
And for the record, even when you are surrounded by people most of the time, there is still a loneliness in having a writer’s soul. It’s a little different than the rest, especially if you’re one who tends to gravitate toward the bizarre and offbeat musical notes of life.
oh, Shawna, I couldn’t agree with you more as I am one of those who gravitate toward the bizare and offbeat 🙂
You’re so right, Shawna. What was it Emily Dickinson said? Tell all the Truth but tell it slant. Sometimes we even look at it pretty slant, too. And music? I go around half the time whistling guitar fills from songs, not their melodies.
smiles..thanks joe for hosting tonight and yes you DO look sexy with that apron…haha
happy OLN…out on the trail in a minute to read your entries..hope you’re having fun meeting all the great poets out there..
{{{blush}}}
You do it to me every time! Thank you, Claudia.
Thanks, Joe! Happy Open Link Night, everyone!
My pleasure, Kelly.
Hey Joe, thanks for hosting. I washed the apron and hung it on a nail back there somewhere for ya. I couldn’t agree with you more about the people in one’s meatspace world having no big desire to tune into the whole poetry thing. My husband has yet to read a single thing I’ve written, but that’s cool–I don’t get into watching him drilling and pounding and fixing strange mechanical things either. As you say fortunately for us there’s the pub, and the rest of cyberspace to lurk in, finding those who want to read, and who want to be read.
Hello and best of holidays to everyone stateside, and forgive me if I’m more absent than present this time–I linked in, but may not be able to do much reading due to company and chores, but I’ll try to get back later for a breeze through.
For a guy who writes so often about loneliness, I know when I’m here there are lots of other folks more than a little like me to harmonize with. Joy, you always inspire me. AND you leave the place shiny. Heck, you even pressed the apron!
Have a great holiday, dear.
This week’s OLN poem is a humble tribute to Shelagh Delaney.
wow – ten minutes into the start and already 40 poems linked up – awesome! Loved the welcome post, Joe – thank you. With it you have taken the phrase “Joe Cool” to a whole new level for me 😉
Wow, thank you, Sheila. I feel more chilly than cool, but your kind words have moved me to feeling like “Joe Warm.” And, for me, that’s a very good thing.
Have a great week. See you later.
Hi, Joe,
Your article is right up my alley. With my job, my day begins at 3 am and I get home around 7 pm. For two hours of the day, I have three employees in the office. For the rest of the time, I rattle around with only the two minute interactions with customers to break the silence. If it weren’t for the opportunity to interact online (if I choose), I think I might be more bonkers than I already am. I’m so glad to have these links to the world.
Nice apron, by the way. You’re kind of cute in it. I’ll just have some tomato juice tonight. Thanks *smiling*
Beth
Thanks for stopping by, Beth. I know you have that long drive home, so tomato juice it is. Always a pleasure to sit and talk with you. Also, to read your terrific work.
First timer – time to bend a few taps.
thanks Joe…another fine day for words and wonder
Peace
Posted fragment of a fable poem still unfinished tonight to see if it’s worth finishing
cheers Joe can definitely relate to what you wrote and like to say thank you and all the poets who have extended their hands of friendship here too x x x
Same to you, Kerry. Hope you’re feeling great. I’ll be around to talk soon.
Wait a sec! I accidentally put my new poem for this week and the old one from last week into Mr Linky … oops … LOL What was funny is that there are so many submissions so fast that although I refreshed the screen accidentally right after my new poem for this week is # 48 and is my old one # 49? Nope, it’s #50 … someone got in the middle of my postings … I love this group!
Looking forward to your words this week everyone! My thanks to our host! ~ Rose
Always a pleasure to see you, Rose.
The Internet did come to my rescue too…like-minded friends r definitely much easier to mix with. Otherwise all I’m left to is dealing with the engineering fraternity, and their terribly bland, discussions that nvr touch me neway. They think me to b sme kinda literature freak… 😥
Its past 2am here…I thought I would post real quick, but I’m on the 18th! Wonder hw u get here so impossibly fast!
Anyways, its a gud nite fr me. Have an awesme tym at d bar 😀
Hi everyone….my second week. I love this place…maybe I will even start writing poetry more often…who knows??? Enjoy your day/evening!!!
Jenyfer
welcome to open link night everyone…looking forward to stopping in your place and seeing what you have served up…and since it is thanksgiving. thank you for what you give each week to make this a success…
great opening joe…felt…writing can be a very lonely place…
Thanks, Brian. Not as lonely as it once was, when the only voices I EVER heard were those in my head and the nasty editorial ones on my shoulders.
Have a fabulous holiday.
Hi Joe, *shakes hand* So good to see you hosting here again tonight!
Loved your intro– so true–many of us do not have similarly afflicted people nearby, but the wonder of internet has introduced me to many wonderful new friends, and connected me to some absolutely amazing writing!
Am sharing a poem, a Quatern, that was written earlier this month. Some may have already read, but thought I’d bring it along to share anyway. Pour me a little of what everyone else is drinking. I’ll be at that table in the corner with my friends catching up on the latest word!
Cheers!
Coming right up, Ginny! I’ve got to see what a Quatern is all about.
Hi Joe ~ loved your intro. It resonated for me in that I’ve also found wonderful friends through our online poetry community. Oh, and I’m rather fond of poet guy too 😉
Without this community I would never have met you, read your words, and that would have diminished my life greatly.
Hi Joe–so much going on for me right now, I’m not sure how much time I’ll have in the next few days as a lot of urgent situations beckoning. That said, those are good times to read poems.
K>
Hi, Karin! Just glad to see you here. Hope everything goes well for you this week.
hi all…wanted to pop by this evening and wish you all well & a great intro Joe…there is some exciting news afoot that should be announced soon that involves Gay, Claudia & Bri, along with old friends Dustus, Shan & myself…on this note i also have been kinda pleased that I have actually started writing again….having written 4 poems in the last 10 days….yes 4….stunned me too!!! take care…pete
hey pete..great seeing you in the pub…and wondering what kind of news you’re talking about…hihi
So great to see you here, my friend. And a Welsh songbird told me the grand news.
Pete, I think I might put some promotional bookmarks together with your mug on them…smiles.
Yo, Joe! Happy TGD wishes to you and yours…I know you’re tired…but you’re still the family turkey champ…Dare I say…. just wing it…*couldn’t resist bad pun* Cheers!
Thank you, Jackie. It’s sometimes hard to be the turkey champ in my family. So many already have a leg up. Ouch!! Channeling my inner Craig. 😉
I writing about and drinking tea at the pub this week. Ready to see who else is here and what they are posting.
Thanks to Joe and to all at dVerse for making this a fun place to be and to share.
Aha! OK. I’m in again.
Joining in a little earlier than usual. I can’t wait to read some great poetry and have a couple shots at the pub.
just read on FB that charles elliot had a car accident ..this is what joanne wrote:
“We won’t be able to make it today. Charles Elliott had a car accident yesterday. He’s ok except for a few broken ribs, but will be doing some recovering when he comes home from the hospital today. Maybe we’ll still get a chance to read over the next couple of days. Have fun!”
so if you got time, you may want to jump over to her place and give them a hug and a word of encouragement..
before signing off for today i also wanted to say a huge thank you for your sensitive comments on my OLN today… was not an easy poem to write as it is about my battle with anorexia during teenage years…but you’re awesome.. so many felt encouraged to share a bit of their own story and yes..feel blessed by being part of such a great community… see you tomorrow..
((claudia)) it was a brave and well penned write…sleep well…
Happy to be here tonight. Thanks for hosting, Joe.
P.S. Happy Thanksgiving to all my US friends.
Joe, thanks for hosting tonight, really look forward to another fantastic OLN
Hi Joe & all… thanks for being here. Happy Thanksgiving too, to all who will be celebrating later this week…
Thanks for the intro Joe – indeed a very organic, friendly community both here at the pub and on tab 1 (my twitter tab) – mine’s a beer (as always) – thanks Joe, “my round, what’s your tipple?” 🙂
Oh, I have very simple tastes, Steve. A nice India Pale Ale would go down nicely, though. Thanks.
I’ve made it to the 50-link marker. Yay! So I’m curious, who all reads every single poem (or almost all of them)? Do you pick and choose based on your favorite poets and/or how much time you have to read? Or do you mainly read those who read you? What is your open-link-night process? 🙂
i usually read them all…i read them on break between clients and then in the evening after the fam is in bed…
you know, i think that in choosing what to read…i would focus on those that speak to you and those that comment on you…blogging itself is relational, there are not too many that will just read you because you write good or stick around if you dont comment back…
that being said, if you are looking for readers/commenters you have to comment…it is one truth i have learned in blogging over the last 3 years.
Oh I definitely read and comment! I just rarely find it possible to read all the poems linked. 🙂
i know that you do so dont think it was directed at you just in general…and trust me, Natasha jokes about it, but i do get poetry hangovers on wednesdays…haha…
you know shawna…bri fell into the magic potion when he was a child..that’s why he can do such a heluva commenting…smiles
i try to catch at least two third of the people, visit the new ones to get to know them and return all comments…would love to comment on all but as my name isn’t obelix…no chance to make it unless someone brews me that magic drink…haha
Shawna – I once was able to read all of them, but then I came to a time when I had restrictions and limitations. I try to read as many as I can and at least comment on everyone who has come to visit me. These days I come short more days than not for which I am truly sorry and apologetic, but I love reading as many as possible. Every poem opens new worlds and horizons for me. Each of us has days/weeks/months when our lives take over and take us away from the poetry world. It should be fun, and it should make you happy.
Thanks as always for hosting this! Here’s my latest limerick and Limerick-Off challenge: Edible Limerick.
Thank you for Open Link Night! I feel like everything I’m writing is crap lately, so haven’t been posting much. I was going to chicken out yet again today, but decided to put it out there anyway, because you all are so darn encouraging. Thanks!
I don’t believe there are too many of us who are 100% sure we like what we’re linking every week. I’m never sure. Ever. But all these fine folks you see around here will let you know that you’re a brave and singular artist because there really is just one voice like yours. I’m glad you made it, Lizzi.
Oh, and your poem packs a wallop. A parting shot to my emotional breadbasket. 🙂
i am glad you did post…facing it is the only way to get beyond it…and i would never want to see anyone lose their voice….
Despite packing to move and holiday pressures I am here :). No place I’d rather be on Tuesday night. Thank you Joe!
So very glad to see you, Anna. Wow, holiday times AND a move! Hopefully you get a little Anna-time over the coming days.
I’ll be getting in touch with you soon. Thanks for stopping by!
smiles…great to see you anna…
First chance to post in a couple weeks… oof. Good for a rainy Tuesday, though.
Good evening all,
Been going through a family crisis the last few days, so I have to go with another old poem again due to time constraints, but I needed to at least stop in for a drink or 12 just so I could ground myself even for just a brief moment. I’ll try my best to get reading some others this week, but can’t promise anything right now. Peace!
One of my all times places to drop in, link up, and walk around and sample! Your welcome was so beautiful. Loved how you gave us all the freedom to do whatever we like…even leaving our poem quietly under the coaster.
Really is the warmest link up I’ve participated in…need to make sure I stop in more regularly than I have!
I’m in!
I have two poems this week but only linked one.
Someone will tell me if it’s okay to link both of them, right?
enjoyed you poem becky…usually we say on Open Link Nights it’s limited to one poem, otherwise mr. linky is going to explode..smiles
Back again my friends, with another little offering ♥
Thanks for hosting Joe. Love your intro and your words ~ You and everyone here in the community inspire me ~
Happy Thanksgiving ~
Oh shoot! I fell asleep just as I was linking in last night, I think it was 40 then, and now when I finally do, its 114th 🙂 Happy OLN everyone!
Your words are so relatable, thank you.
Posted my long verse ‘Sighs’ and some of the haiku about suffering… have been in that mood where everything looks bleak and you start enjoying pain… selfishly.

nice…enjoyed your verse and always great to see you shashi!
Posted my “school of love” poem! … And I hope you like it! … It’s wonderful to be part of such supportive community of poets and writers! Humbling, and educational for beginners like me! So thank you! And Happy Thanksgiving to y’all! 😀
arent we all beginners in poetry..and in love…if we think we have it figured out we obviously still have much to learn…
119 poets sneaked in already while i was asleep…whew…what a crowd… good morning and see you on the trail…

Stranger in a strange and unfamiliar land, wanders…..a light brought me here, I have no idea if my message was received, tho here we are, auspiciously for me , for I am a beginner and have never worked anything i am offering…I am humbled by the community of incredible poets I am reading here…maybe the universe kept my post so i wouldn’t make a fool of myself…hahahha so Joe hi! dani! great to see you!
Well several of my poetic cyber pals from over on MAGPIE TALES also stop by here, so I thought I would drop in and test the waters. This is a very complex and well organized site; kind of overwhelming. But on the upside, it will get my words out there even further, touching and being touched.
welcome glenn…look around..enjoy and in case you got a question..feel free to ask..
we try not to be too complex glenn…its great to see you here…have fun with it….and as claudia said, anything you need let us know…
Glad to be participating again!
and with a fine piece of writing…let’s climb a tree together…smiles
Glad to be part of things here. Happy Thanksgiving to folks in the USA. Poetry is one of the gifts in my life that I’m grateful for.
