Good afternoon/evening/morning poets and welcome to Open Link Night 101.
One-oh-one. What does that make you think of? For many of us, particularly those of a North American persuasion, 101 might make you think of beginning something new. Foundation courses at schools and colleges are often numbered 101, so you might take Moral Philosophy 101, or Nuclear Physics 101, or … well, you get the picture … smiles.
However, I am not North American and the education system I grew up in was organised slightly differently. For me, the phrase “One-oh-one” takes me to literature, specifically to George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel, 1984, were Room 101 was housed in the Ministry of Love. What is kept in Room 101 is a closely guarded secret; when Winston Smith is arrested by the Thought Police, Agent O’Brien tells him:
You asked me once, what was in Room 101. I told you that you knew the answer already. Everyone knows it. The thing that is in Room 101 is the worst thing in the world.
The truth is that Room 101 is a torture chamber where prisoners are forced to face their worst nightmares by agents of the omniscient Party. For Winston Smith, that means rats.
Room 101 is such a powerful idea that it was subverted to become a comedy/chat show here in the UK, both on radio and later on TV. The show’s guests were invited to bring suggestions of music, books and a whole host of other things – whatever they chose – to be consigned to oblivion in Room 101, but only if the host and audience agreed. Stephen Fry famously consigned Room 101 to Room 101! Given the chance, I would instantly consign almost all reality TV shows to Room 101 … smiles.
So what would you find in Room 101, or what would you like send there? While you’re thinking about that, let’s get on with the poetry.
Here’s what to do:
- Write a poem and post it to your webpage.
- Click on the Mr. Linky button below and enter your name and direct url/web address to your poem; one poem per person please.
- There you will also find the list of those participating this week. You might want to refresh this occasionally or check back in as there are people joining over the next 33 hours.
- If it’s your first time here, please leave a comment to say so. That makes it much easier for us to find you and encourage you by visiting your site.
- Read other poets who have linked. Let them know what you thought, how their poem moved you, what caught your attention etc. The not-so-secret formula to receiving more visits and comments on your blog is to read and comment on other people’s poems. Please don’t forget to return the favour of those who have visited and commented on your work.
- Encourage others to participate through social media, promote both your own work and others.
- Have fun meeting and engaging with your fellow poets.
PS – I’m going to be late this evening because I’m attending the first of three performance poetry workshops put on by Inky Fingers. Thanks to Brian and Claudia for minding the bar in my absence … smiles
First time I’m first one to leave comment! Cheers!
confetti!!!!!! ha…smiles
Hi Jacqui. I missed being comment #1 by not being here. It’s OK – I had a late note from the bosses … smiles
excused…smiles.
101 – new start – ha – i like that – cheers to the next 100 – cheers to all the fine poetry and cheers to our scot pub tender – happy oln everyone
Thanks for covering for me, Claudia.
Happy Open Link Night! Room 101 … yikes.
Welcome, Marilyn; it’s good to see you here … smiles
Hi and happy Tuesday! Thanks as always!
Happy Tuesday to you too, Madeleine.
1984 is one of my favorite novels. I haven’t thought about room 101 for a while, though. Thank you for the reminder… I have to start writing some poetry now! Happy OLN!
have read it back in school…think i need to re-read and break with my habit to never read a book twice… ha..
I am like you with few exceptions –1984 is one of them. I first read its spanish translation for a class in high school. The second time was in English. I enjoyed both.
reading the same book in different languages sounds like a good idea..
pretty cool reading in multiple languages…i wonder if the same feel comes in each….
That’s difficult to describe. The first time I was blown away by the ideas, the power of semantics, vocabulary, etc. I enjoyed and quoted the book so many times that years later I decided I had to read it in the language it was written. The second time was also amazing, it felt like a déjà vu. I could tell some very minor details that had to be changed to accommodate differences between Spanish and English languages. Other than that, I felt I knew Orwell’s voice from before.
interesting…i would imagine there would be things in the two languages that would play differently…hmm…might have to try this at some point now…smiles.
I had to study 1984 for HIgher English. So many of Orwell’s predictions – made in 1948 – have come to pass in one form or another.
Tony, a haunting reminder, especially given some of the Orwellian goings-on. But I did Orwell last week. Today I stuck to, shall we say, Flying 101?
aint that the truth on the orwellian going ons….
scary…
The truth is out there somewhere – probably being shredded as I type …
ha
We’re house hunting today, and just arriving at the first of four we are going to look at this afternoon. I’ll be back later to read some awesome poetry!
nice…happy house hunting…hope you find what you’re looking for…exciting…
best wishes on house hunting…not always an easy thing…
Hey Charles, looking for a new home is exciting – as long as it is by choice. Hope you find something you all like and can afford … smiles.
Oh yes, Tony, it is by choice. We’re looking for a retirement home on the lake. I think we found it, too!
1984 is becoming more of a reality in many ways. Thanks for hosting, Tony and enjoy yourself. Happy Open Link to all.
Pamela
oh its been going on for some time….the most recent whistleblowing…it does not surprise me at all…or that they are shifting all the attention on to the whistleblower to distract what they have been doing…
It’s disturbing how much Orwell got right. Between 1984 and Animal Farm, he didn’t miss and hit the wall too often.
Couldn’t agree with you more about the present state of british television. Mindnumbingly 101 indeed.
You know Orwell walked at night around his ignominious grave stone, don’t you? Maybe looking for room 101 again. I know, as we lived next door to that churchyard and could see him float by on many a dark night.
for real? or are you just pulling my leg?
i used to live by a graveyard and could tell you some stories…
Apparently Room 101 was in Broadcasting House and was the site of numerous miind-crushingly boring meetings that Orwell had to attend. Nice way to get your own back … smiles
Enjoy the poetry readings Tony. I know they’re not in room 101. Thanks for hosting tonight.
It was interesting tonight; not much performance and less poetry, more of an introduction and consideration of why we might want to read our work live and in public.
Thanks for the opener Tony–enjoy the workshops! Happy OLN to all 🙂
Happy OLN to you too 🙂
Thanks Tony! I’m leaving a more personal poem/reflection by another prompt from Victoria … father’s day dead or alive. I guess my worst fear is death by fire so in essence my poem and ending is by fire on a mountain. Send it to room 101 NOW! You know I have not read 1984 but my hubby keeps talking about it.
We had to read 1984 and Animal Farm at school. I’m glad now; they really help to make sense of the world as it is today.
ha. room 101…let me give some thought to that…
these decisions are not to be rushed into…smiles
nice opening sir…
be out on the trail soon…passing off my ward for the summer and then i am to you…
Now, wouldn’t you like to put in everyone who tries to use education for their political ends ..? Just a thought … smiles
George Orwelll and dystopia, I come to think about RSA of course… but I guess I’m now stuck in some registry somewhere for saying so… wonder if there is some room 101 somewhere, where I’m forced to listen to “Living next door to Alice” on repeat. Summer is probably the best time to read dystopia novels. I thought I would get hold of Kallocain about a farmaceutical dystopy..
haha…they even translated the song into german…it didn’t make it better..ha
That sounds really even worse
There are worse songs, Bjorn. Be thankful that you don’t know them … smiles
‘allo, ‘allo!
bonjour monsieur…tu va bien..?
Orale, mi chica!
um…
yeah.
howdy.
smiles.
Bonjour, Monsieur Mosk. Sadly, I don’t parlez Francais.
I like sending room 101 to itself, and would send all forms of torture there too! Today I’ve finally got my Beauty Poem for you.
smiles…really enjoyed your hands poem susan…
Good call there Susan, torture is gone … smiles
If only it were really that simple….
…101 sounds scary in one ear…but def not here… loved the share Tony…
…& poor me…just figured out this bird called twitter… haha… smiles…
Beware of my tweets. I retweet quite a lot … hope you find the fun of it Kelvin…
…yup.. i am… ah, how i’ve been so ignorant of it… haha… i thought it was boring… but not until today… haha…
smiles…followed you back this morning…
Have to watch out for that bird; it can be very noisy….
where’s the beer?
what about a german weizenbier…?
good to see you in the pub mark and congrats on the exhibition
I’d love one! Thanks Claudia.
when i have it, german is def a top choice….
really nice wood cuts sir….
Thanks Brian.
I’ve been past the Belhaven brewery twice today; would a pint of 80 Shilling answer your need?
Had to step out to do yard work – sure am ready for it now!
101 is a highway in California, too, with all the implicit conundrum of individuality hogtied to car culture, resource extraction, and bedroom “communities” far removed from either work or play.
If it were me, I’d have made Highway 101 a circular road so that you never actually got anywhere. We have one of those in England; it’s called the M25 … smiles
Hello and Happy Tuesday to all!
hello, back.
smiles.
Happy Tuesday – or what’s left of it here, anyway.
working on my first poem in awhile, hope to have later today or tomorrow – but you already knew that, in room 101, didn’t you 😉
looking forward to read…
yay! great to see you sir…i look forward to it as well…
Nice to see you again – and so glad you are writing.
ok… hubs just flew in from berlin.. he was visiting his mom who is in a hospital there…had two surgeries…long story but she’s doing good…logging off for the night and back in the AM to catch up…
glad to hear mom is doing good…have fun catching up with hubs….
good eve c….
Glad that your mother in law is doing well. Catch you on the trail fomorrow, I expect.
Wow. 101 meetings at the pub already? That means it must be about time for my three year blogging anniversary. 🙂
woot…congrats on 3 years….most do not make it that long for sure…
101 – time flies when poets are having fun.
Room 101 – I’d send all political talk there when families & friends get together! Thanks – I’ll be back this evening.
have a daughter’s birthday/slumber party to prepare for tomorrow night- 5th grade girls the theme: spa – fingernails, toes, massages… and hopefully a movie to quiet them down. No sleep tomorrow night!
oo the spa birthday sounds fun….and um, good luck on the quieting them down..haha….
I’m lucky because the older sisters are going to be the one doing the “spa” for the younger girls. I’m not the best with manicures and pedicures.
Calling it a slumber party is a bit more realistic than we are here; we call them sleepovers, although there is precious little sleep involved.
Yes, my daughter is already bouncing off the walls with excitement. And my 5 year old son is insisting he can color his toes too! ha
HI Folks and welcome to OLN 101 😀
Thanks to Brian and Claudia for minding the bar in my absence. Today’s workshop was mainly about why we might want to perform our poetry and/or short stories than about writing; I think there’ll be more about that in the next 2 weeks. However, they do want us to consider putting on our own performance … Yikes!
oh have fun with it tony…performing will def make you look at how you write…as writing performance pieces can be much different than writing for the page…what works in one place does not necessarily in another…
might be performing at a wine festival this weekend…if i can work the schedule….free food and refreshments for the work…not a bad deal…smiles.
Do they have any idea how much you can eat, Brian?
hey what you trying to say?
smiles.
A welcome opportunity for a late entry to Saturdays prompt – thanks Tony.
Room 101? Reality TV shows for me too and dentists – at least the need for dentists!
Anna :o]
I’m not a great fan of dentists – but toothache is worse, so into Room 101 it goes.
Goodnight friends midnight here.
sleep well sir…fun chasing you around the trail tonight…
Goodnight Bjorn
OK folks, I know I’ve not been here long, but it’s been a long day for me and I’m struggling to stay awake. I’ll hit the trail fresh tomorrow. Have fun … smiles
sleep well sir…
taking a break for dinner and family time…
be back in a bit to return comments….
Tony, great opening. Hope you get some good sleep. Coming in late today. I go to the movies about once a year and it was today…The Great Gatsby. Liked the book better but it was okay. Good casting.
nice…have not seen gatsby yet….waiting on redbox…have heard pretty good things though
Peace and love to all xx
back at you poppy!
Hi Tony – I have to say that I find the encounter in 1984 (Room 101) one of the most terrifying scenes in literature. It sort of corresponds to one of my fears and it is so very powerful as it is not “advanced” at all, just kind of primal.
I have been working very hard lately and not been very good with posting, but maybe I can come up with something. Thanks for unusual post! k.
hiya k…
Hey Brian – my brain only works in elephant and dog territory today! Could be worse, I suppose (thinking of Room 101!) k.
Thanks for hosting tonight’s OLN Tony. I am a little embarrassed to admit, but I hate the blood pressure cuff at the doctor office. I have been known to throw them across the room on occasion when I could feel the blip/heart beat in my arm. I know, I’m a tad neurotic. I’ll be by later to post a poem if I get inspired.
he he 101 replies when I post.
101 is also the room Thomas Anderson lives in from the Matrix.
interesting…did not make that connection…
alright…3 boys wore me out today playing full house hide n seek…and trying to snow sled in the rain…i will be in first thing to catch up…time to sleep before i go cross eyed…smiles.
back and catching up… good morning….
Well my poem wasn’t about Room 101, but it was written in a hotel room on Hwy 101… good to be back at the Pub – it’s been a while. -Kelly E.
I will be back to read and post in the morning. Too much computer time today!…
i’m in! finally 😉 just a short paris poem, but fun, thanks you guys 🙂
yay!
Late as ever but hey, I’m here! 🙂
Cheers people!
Always good to see you … smiles
Happy 101th post! … I’ll return soon and read all the 101 specials….
Time to wipe down the bar, put the chairs up, mop the floor and send the keys to Canada, so our next host can prepare.
