Good evening/afternoon/morning poets; please choose the time of day that is appropriate to where you are … smiles. My name is Tony Maude, and once again it is my pleasure to welcome you to the weekly poetry extravaganza that is Open Link Night here at dVerse.
Last Friday afternoon I came home from my volunteer spot at the Grassmarket Community Project in Edinburgh to find a brown envelope addressed to me lying behind the front door of our house. I had no clue who it could be from; the postmark was for the southwest of England and the only people I know there would have handwritten the address on the envelope. It was typed. Curious, I opened the letter and read:
Dear Tony
THE BOOK OF LOVE AND LOSS (The Anthology) edited by R V Bailey and June Hall
1. We would very much like to publish under the Belgrave Press imprint the following poems which you have submitted for this Anthology: …
You could have knocked me down with the proverbial feather.
Now, I’m not telling you this in order to receive your congratulations – although I am very happy to receive them. Nor am I telling you this in some kind of boastful way. My reason for letting you know about this small success in my writing career is because it would not have happened apart from my involvement at dVerse.
You see, the poem that has been accepted for inclusion in the above anthology is one that I wrote and then linked up to the 100th Open Link Night, which was six months ago now. One of the Pub regulars – step forward Viv Blake – read my poem then commented that she thought it would be ideal for inclusion in an anthology that she knew was being prepared and strongly encouraged me to submit it to the editors.
Now, if Viv had not alerted me to the opportunity that this forthcoming anthology presented, I would never have submitted my work because I would not have known where to send it. In the world of poetry, there are far more publication opportunities than any of us can possibly keep abreast of, but …
At dVerse we have poets from every corner of the globe and many of us know about some of the opportunities for publication of our work that exist. If, in the course of reading each other’s work we think, “That poem might be well received by …” then I think it would be brilliant to let the writer know. Viv did that for me and the rest, as they say, is history.
It is this kind of thing that builds community, and here at dVerse that’s what we want to be; a community of poets who encourage one another as we seek to enjoy and develop the art of using words to enable people to see the world with fresh eyes.
OK, OK – you didn’t come here to listen to me talking. What you want to do is link your poem and then get out on the trail to read and comment on other people’s work …
So without further ado, let’s get to the poetry. The regulars know how this works, but for any newcomers here’s what to do:
PS Get well soon Viv … smiles
Hi, hi, hi. Welcome friends old and new … smiles
good evening sir…
smiles
Good evening boss …
smiles back
Well back at last from all the Christmas/New Year brouhaha and celebrations. Actually still going on a bit, but finally a little time to spend with poets and poetry. Looking forward to it! Hi Tony sorry I missed MTB. I’ll be better if I possibly can! Happy New Year everyone.
It’s all gone quiet here. Enjoy it while it lasts, that’s what I say.
PS – Congratulations on the publication – I posted first and read later. Thanks for hosting today too! Loved loved loved your poem today! Kudos.
thanks, Gay … smiles
Congratulations, Tony! And happy OLN, mate!
Happy OLN to you too, Joe – and thanks … smiles
l always love listening to the host talking here at the Pub. Congratulations, Tony, and many many more similar occasions be yours!
Thank you Susan … I hope that will be true for you and many others here too, if that is your ambition as a poet.
in the middle of student exchange reports….but taking time to stop in
Gotta take time to relax, but those reports sure can take it out of you. Nice to see you here … smiles
student exchange is a wonderful thing…. hope the reports are fun to read…
Congrats Tony ~ This is what a community is for, supporting & encouraging others ~
Happy OLN to everyone ~
Thanks, Grace. Happy OLN … smiles
oh.. I still want to congratulate… wonderful news, and what an evidence that this is a community… I’m still in a late telephone conference…
Hi again Tony , A good story indeed and shows what the good the site can do, bringing people together for growth and to open up creative possibilities – so thanks for doing what you do… And, like I said the other day, feels good to be back at a re-invigorated D’verse and looking forward to a good old read up later tonight, back in the UK – where, as you know, its already gone 8 p.m. Am also posting here tonight my first new poem for 2014 – hope it touches some of you at the bar…
With Best Wishes Scott wwww.scotthastie.com
Thanks Scott. Something else we can do – and Brian brought it up last week – is connect people together in mentoring relationships.
Most of you won’t know that Scott has been a regular commenter on my blog, which I have found helpful, so I asked if he would be prepared to mentor me for a while. He agreed … smiles
That’s awfully late in Sweden. I hope it’s really important.
And thanks, Björn; I’m looking forward to seeing your work in book form … smiles
I have an idea… and I’m working on the book… hmmm I might need help later 🙂
We can talk about the book and any help you might need or want with it in the back room … smiles
Bjorn, good….. I do hope you do a book!! You have been quite prolific as a poet!
Soon it will be 1000 entries on my blog 😉
Wow, Bjorn!! Impressive.
Looking forward to another fun night at d’Verse!
If it’s fun you’re after, my place may not be a good stop. Just warning you … smiles
I do have to admit, some of these poems throw me for a loop or make me sad, but it’s always a fun night at d’Verse Open Link 🙂
Hi Tony – good to see you at the bar today… Looking forward to another exhaustive review of all the great contributions of all of the good folks here at the pub! Thanks for being here! Jay
Nice to see you Jay. Should you get thirsty out on the trail, there’s always a short-cut back to the bar. That’s how things work in poetry … smiles
Congratulations Tony! That’s a wonderful testament and tribute to this community!
It sure is, Madeleine. I’d like to hope that this story could be just one of many similar ones that dVerse poets have to tell in the months and years ahead.
Right on, Tony! Round of tap water on you. 🙂 And cool on Viv, too. Good place, this pub…
Tap water it is … smiles … although I may just pollute mine with a good measure of single malt … not too much water, mind … smiles
can i get a glass of lukewarm tap water….. ?
yeah i know sounds strange…my fam suspects i had japanese forefathers… smiles
One glass of lukewarm water coming right up. After all, the customer is always right, especially when she’s the boss … smiles
どうもありがとうございました
smiles…
and congrats on the publication tony… well deserved and i so agree with what you say about community and inspiring and encouraging each other…
Ah, dear Claudia, you and Brian have done so much to inspire so many poets … me included.
Congratulations! And that’s the stuff that dreams are made of- great to hear the whole story. It is so true- there are so many opportunities, yet we may not know, or I mean, not even share in these types of situations otherwise. I know for me, just sharing here is a big step in my writing journey. Just stepping out of the closet, into writing community. Again, congrats, Tony.
Thanks, Dawn. None of us could possibly know of all the opportunities there are, but maybe we can help each other to find the right ones.
woot…congrats tony…that is awesome…makes you feel good…
happy OLN everyone…let me get the kiddos out on the buses and i will be around to see you….
See you later, boss … smiles
First timer here, would love feedback! Never knew places like this existed. Congrats to Tony, story sounds amazing and unimaginable.
Welcome R.B. and thanks. Why not pull up a stool and fortify yourself for the trail? 😀
Thank you! I wish I had a stool instead of this IKEA chair… it’ll have to do
welcome at dVerse Raphael…. feel free to look around, meet some other poets and if we can be of any help, if you have questions…. just ask away
This has made my day so great! I have many questions but most of them seem to be a bit inconsequential. Is this based in the UK?
its all over….claudia and i founded it….i am in the states and she is in germany….the team is from all over the place…and we have had pub tenders prior from all over as well….we try to keep it dverse.
How exciting, Tony, congrats! Such a wonderful surprise to find on your doorstep 🙂 I will be along shortly to post and read – looking forward to another great night at the Pub – K
Nice to see you K; it’s been too long since I visited your place – although I do get your work in my in-box … smiles
happy new year, Tony – sounds like it is starting off with good news – smiles – K
Congratulations, Tony! I agree, this community is a wonderful place, and we can benefit in so many ways – I know I have. Thank you for hosting tonight – and I shall be along later/tomorrow/over the next few days to read and enjoy the excellent works….
Thanks, Freya. This community really could be the centre of a whole lot of stories like this one. Who knows whose writing career might be launched right ehre in the Pub? It could be you … smiles
Now that would be stunning, to celebrate the launch of a ‘new’ writer – fostered and nurtured here in the pub! 🙂
Tony, please accept my congratulations. I like your story though, how a blog friend at DVerse made all the difference.
Thanks for hosting tonight again.
Thank you, Myrna … it wouldn’t have happened without this community. Viv is in France, I am in Scotland, and the internet is vast. How else would we have found each other?
Congrads on your being published….and cheers!
Cheers, Jackie … nice to see you at the bar … smiles
Hi Tony, a good afternoon to you. Yes, it was nice to know about your publication. I can not tell you how much learning I have found from the pages of dversepoets. When I started exploring poetry a few years back, I just knew my thoughts and over the years – slowly and silently, I have found a path for myself.
I have a job that has nothing to do with creative writing, but if I ever get published – I’ll not be able to express how much of it was because of this wonderful community and some of the brilliant people here, who have given me a direction.
Hi Abhra,
You might find it hard to believe, but I’ve only been writing poetry for the past four years. I’ve learned a huge amount through this community; being one of the hosts is a fabulous chance for me to give something back – and I love seeing other poets stretch themselves as they rise to the various prompts and challenges we put out … smiles
Tony, poetry was there in you – it’s only a matter of time, when they a found a medium of expression – sometimes when I look at a very great piece of art – like a painting or even photography, I feel like it’s poetry.
🙂
Tony, that’s GREAT news!!! I bet you are feeling tops right now. Congrats again.
New poem,….”Darwin’s Worms” and a little announcement of my own.
Lady Nyo
Oooh, you tease … smiles. Guess I’ll have to visit to hear your news.
And thanks too … smiles
You could visit just to read the new poem……
This is very good news, Tony! It says a lot about dVerse and the kind of people who post and read there. Congratulations!
Thanks, Gabriella. This really is a great place for poets to hang out … even behind the bar … smiles
Congratulations, Tony! What a wonderful surprise to find in the mail. It sure would be a much better treat than my customary ads, flyers, and bills. LOL. Thanks for tending the bar today as well. Always nice to be in the company of such a fine host!
Aww, shucks. Excuse me a moment while I duck behind the bar and recompose myself …
That’s better. I get my share of bills, flyers and other unwanted and other such unsolicited trash through my letterbox, too, so it was wonderful to find this. Really great that dverse was such a significant part of the story too.
ok… bedtime for me over here in germany…..will be back in the AM to catch up… happy writing and reading everyone…
Sleep well, Claudia. Sweet dreams … heads off humming the Eurythmics to himself … smiles
Happy Open Link Night, everyone! And congratulations, Tony. 🙂
Happy OLN to you too Marilyn – and thanks … smiles
Congratulations Tony!!! What an awesome surprise for you 🙂 Thanks for tending bar today.
Thank you – and it’s a pleasure to tend the bar for such a great community … smiles
I just realized that I forgot to link back to you all with my post that I linked. I stink!! I have a bunch of excuses I could use, but actually I just plain forgot! I’m sooo sorry. I added the link to the post 🙂
Congratulations, Tony, on getting published!
Thanks, Bryan.
Congratulations! I may not know you, but it makes me happy to hear of any poet being published-if there’s hope for one, there’s hope for us all.
OK folks, it’s late over here and I need to get some sleep. Have fun on the trail, y’all … smiles
sleep well tony…i will hang our for a bit and see who comes through the gateway….still waiting on those interstellar travellers from the other night…smiles.
It did not sound like boasting at all, your success really brings a smile on my face, because it is exactly like you wrote it – it makes the warmth of a community shine and be shared and just gives sparkles all around. Congratulations! 🙂
Thanks for that; that was the tone I was hoping for … smiles
A little late to the party tonight.
Tony first congrats!
Also I could not agree more. What a fantastic group and community we have here. I feel honored to hang with such a wonderful group of people.
I just got a new microphone so I am reading one of my old poems. Let me know what you think about the recording and feel free to offer suggestions.
Cheers,
Delaina
oo look forward to hearing your voice…
Thanks for the congratulations; being part of this wonderful group of people has certainly made areal difference for me. I’d love it if we heard a lot more stories like mine.
I’ll be round to read/listen later – I’ve got some work that I need to get done …
Well, mow me down! Would ya lookit the crowd in here tonight! Ever body musta got all caught up with holidays and all. Hope y’all had a great holiday, and this ol’ word-murderer wishes each and ever one a ya a awesome 2014!
word murderer…ha…heading over ina few…
You don’t murder your words, Charles … smiles. Here’s hoping for a good 2014 for you and yours.
Congratulations, Tony…that was very generous of Viv to steer you to that anthology. And thanks for hosting tonight. I need to get busy visiting some of these fine poets…
Gayle ~
good to see you gayle…
Good to see you here, Brian…thanks.
Thanks Gayle, and yes it was very generous – but that’s the kind of people we attract here at dVerse, just like your good self. Long may that continue … smiles
You’re right about that, Tony…a great group of people…and thank you…smiles back.
Congrats to Tony on getting work published! Exciting for you! And cheers to Bjorn’s 1000th post (impressive to this newbie hoping to reach 100 posts this year). The d’Verse community inspires me! I probably won’t link but will def read around…
I remember my 100th post; my 1000th is way off. Inspiration is one of the things we hope to provide here at the Pub; encouragement is another. Don’t be afraid to link up; everyone here is really kind and generous.
Hi Tony & dVerse friends, Not sharing tonight, but still stopping by to read awhile. Congrats Tony, on having your pieces published, well deserved indeed. Happy OLN to all!
hiya ginny…how is your week going?
Hi Ginny,
Just the one piece in this Anthology, and thanks for the congrats … smiles.
I’m guessing your life is busy and/or difficult right now. Hope things improve in the near – very near – future.
wow…waking to 90 links…. i willl be busy…smiles….good morning…
97 now; I’m gonna be busy too … smiles
Hi, Tony. Thanks for hosting. I will be around to read tomorrow afternoon. I have to get some sleep. Happy open link to all.
Pamela
sleep well pamela..
I’ll maybe catch you on the trail, Pamela … smiles
Congratulations, Tony. 🙂
Thank you, Imelda. If this can happen for me, it can happen for any of our dVerse poets … smiles
ok – off to work – read as many as i could and will be back in the evening…
Hope today goes well, boss … smiles
Congrats Tony! good to see dverse poets published!
Thank you – and yes, it is great when people who are part of this community achieve some success. I’m looking forward to hearing about many, many more successes for our dVerse poets this year … smiles
That is indeed what community is all about – and I find poets are generous with their support, advice and praise (much more so than other writers, perhaps?). Congratulations, Tony, great news! I’ll post now and read throughout the day when I can.
Hi Marina,
It is people like Viv and the things that they do that remind us what community is and how it should work. I wonder if we poets are more generous with our support and advice because there is little to no money involved. We know we’re not going to become rich from our work, so we can be more generous and a little less competititve than others? Just a thought.
Hi Tony, and congrats! You’ll let us know when the Anthology comes out? I will be reading tomorrow, it’s late here and I’m zapped. Ahhh…it’s good to be back in the pub!
Thanks – and oh, yes, you’ll hear all about it when the anthology is released … smiles. A portion of the price of each copy will be going to support research into Parkinson’s disease, which is a much better reason to buy it than my poetry … smiles
smiles….good to see you ma’am….nice piece tonight as well….get some rest….
Happy New Year to you, Tony, and well done on your publication 🙂
Happy New Year to you too, Polly – and thank you. Not published yet, but I’ll be sure to let folks know when it is … smiles
Just came across your blog and found it to be wonderful. Thank you for this open link night. I have linked my contribution here.
Warm wishes from India.
warm welcome Ayushee…and nice to meet you…smiles
Welcome, Ayushee. Which part of India are you in?
Oh I was 99. Would rather have been 100. So much cooler. In an odd mood this morning. Why can I write for dVerse, but not keep up with haiku?
ha. long form is easier for me…haiku is def an art form to compose something thoughtful in so short a space…
You do know that Basho took 9 years to write one of his haiku, don’t you? Long forms – especially free verse – are much easier because you have so much space to work with.
good morning…
cup of coffee…just got out of a meeting…playing catch up.
happy wednesday!
Happy Wednesday Brian. By now you might be ready for something more potent than coffee.
Congratulations Tony: they accepted one of mine, too. I know one of the editors and knew it would be a publication to be proud of.
No poem from me this week – I’ve just got home from a three day stay in Purgatory (hospital!) following yet another cardiac episode, and am up to my eyes i dealing with 120 odd emails. I did write a poem in hospital, but had no Wi-Fi, so haven’t yet posted it on my blog. I’ll try and read a few of yesterday’s OLN, but not promising anything.
Love,
ViV
woot! congrats on the publication viv – and best wishes for your health as well..
Congratulations Viv; I’m so glad you have work in this anthology too.
Also glad to know that you are home form hospital; hopefully your health will settle down a bit.
Take it easy and let Jock look after you … smiles
sorry about the heart issues and i hope things settle for you a bit in that regard….
Congratulations, Tony and Viv… and everyone here who might have been accepted in that anthology.
What a wonderful story to underline what this amazing community is!
Thanks, Sam. This is truly an amazing group of people to be involved with … smiles
Eyes closing here; I’ll be back to tidy the bar up tomorrow – then I’ll finish my return visits, hopefully in time for Victoria’s MTB prompt.
Looks like tomorrow is going to better for my reading around. I just got back from the hospital and I am exhausted.
Pamela
hugs. get some rest pamela
Hope that was nothing serious either for you or someone you love, Pamela.
Yay Tony! Congratulations! dVerse really is awesome.
dVerse is an amazing group of people. VIv also has a poem in this anthology … smiles
Congratulations on your published poem Tony. Good to see everyone back, bright eyed and bushy tailed !
Thanks, Cressida. It’s good to be back – although many of us needed the break.
Wipe, wipe, wipe
Sweep, sweep, sweep,
Mop, mop, mop …
OK – that’s everything tidy. Time to send the keys over to the US so that Victoria can welcome us for Meeting the Bar later. See you all then … smiles
