For some of us the summer holidays have started already – others are still sweating in the office and on building grounds, in shops or hospitals and schools until the knock on the door can be heard and they can start into their well deserved vacation.
I will have a holiday week in the beginning and a week in the end of july and can’t wait to board that plane to England where I will attend an urban sketching workshop.
What are your plans for the holidays?
What do you love most about them?
What is your funniest or most adventurous holiday you ever had?
Were there times when it wasn’t possible to have a holiday at all?
fyi – the pub will be closed for a summerbreak from June 30 to July 13 and when the pub doors swing open again on July 14 we will celebrate our 3 year pub anniversary… how awesome is that…? And oh…. we have prepared a nice surprise for you as well… so stay tuned.. smiles
And don’t miss the pre-holiday OLN on Saturday, June 28!!
But for now – let’s talk about your holiday plans, hopes or memories.. care to share?
–Claudia
smiles… good evening… just watched the last episode of blacklist…and think i need a holiday now…smiles
hope your monday is going well… will be around and curious to hear about your holiday plans…
Hi, Claudia and friends! I don’t think I’m getting a true Summer holiday/vacation this year. Though, as of today, I am 64 days from a long four-season holiday called retirement. At least I hope it is, just as I hope you all have a lovely break, too. See you soon!
smiles… you know i know a few pensioners that are busier than ever… haha… all the best for the last 64 working days joe
I hope to be a happier, different kind of busy, too. Thanks, Claudia.
Best wishes for the new times in your life!
That sounds like fun – although I am sure you will find many ways to keep yourself busy even in retirement!
Thanks, Claudia – I hope you have a good time.
I shall have to delve into the dim and distant past for your prompt – we don’t seem to do holidays any more: retirement is one long holiday, but we don’t often go anywhere or do anything different. Aren’t we boring!
not boring at all… smiles
i think it’s wonderful when you enjoy life in the familiar environment as well..
We recently went to North California for a weeks holiday, got to experience the redwoods and spent time by the sea. They never seem to last long enough though. So where about in the UK are you going? I head home to the UK in October, just trying to decide on dates. It will be good to see family, I miss them.
Have fun at your workshop.
oh nice… north california sounds great… maybe a bit calmer than the south as well?
i’m going to oxford for the sketching workshop… from what i’ve seen on pictures so far it seems to be a beautiful town
hey – and just seeing that you’re featured over at poets united… will head over to read in a bit…
just back and read that you lived so close to oxford…that is way cool…so i guess you know it well…
You’ll love Oxford, it’s a great place with lots of history. I love the old buildings there and always visit when I go home. I have to make sure I visit Marks and Spencer and Debenhams to stock up on underwear as I have a hard time finding any braas in my size here in the US! Make sure you visit some of the local pubs and head on down to the river too, its beautiful along there in the summer and you can watch rowers and barges going along there. If you like museums the Ashmolean is a great place to visit and if you’re into dinosaurs and odd artifacts from around the world Pitt Rivers is a neat place too. I’m sure you’re going to busy with your sketching, can’t wait to see what you do. If you have the time (and transport) Blenheim Palace is a 17th Century Country House that’s nearby with lovely grounds.
wow thanks.. that sounds awesome….
AH.. yes vacations.. this year I plan on 5 weeks of vacations.. starting next week.. I hope to be able to use it for getting into the mountains and also out to sea in kayak.. I hope to spend more than half of those 5 weeks sleeping in a tent…. I hope to read a lot… bringing my e-reader with me… yes if just weather would improve..
oh i hope the weather does improve björn… that sounds like a wonderful holiday… i will be on a kajak tour as well on july 2 – just one day though and unfortunately not sleeping in a tent…
You will be spending the summer as a true scandinavian!
Scandinavians know how to respect summer holidays – 5 weeks sounds wonderful! Hope the weather stays good for you and that you get plenty of reading and relaxing done.
I have a summer holiday memory I want to share. 🙂
COOL
Sitting by the pool
is not very cool.
Cool it is to be
by the pool, you see.
ha – it’s cool to be inside the pool…. i didn’t make it to the pool so far this year but hopefully will on the weekend
A POOL
A pool
is cool
if not
damned hot.
But what do I know. I am living in the arctics …
🙂
ha, in the arctic
you might break a neck
diving into a pool.
How cool that you’re going on to a painting workshop. Sounds like a nice way to get away. I’ve had many wonderful holidays. My husband and I never had a “real” honeymoon, so every chance we have we make up for that. But since I’ve been retired, my mother passed and mother-in-law is in a nursing home, hubby and I find it less necessary to go away. Often, we remark on how most days actually feel like holidays to us. Not that we do wild and exciting things, but we merely love the daily simple joys. What I like most is just watching the sunset, going to a bookstore, hanging out with folks at the dog park, walking and of course writing.
Have a delicious summer Claudia.
oh i love bookstores and sunsets as well myrna… i think it’s important to have eyes for the simple joys cause they’re so precious and often more precious than the “big” holiday things we do… good to see you myrna…
Sometimes those are the best holidays of all!
alright – bedtime for me – will catch up tomorrow morning….
Sleep well.
sleep well c…i am a few weeks away from true vacation…we are going to a resort in the Pocono Mountains…and taking the bus in to NYC a couple days during the week we are there…first time in NYC with the boys…they will be blown away…ha…
looking forward to our break as well…glad we built that in so we can all recharge and refresh for the long haul…
That sounds like fun! Beautiful and relaxing landscapes in the Pocono Mountains combined with NY-city life. Enjoy!
oh nice… mountains and city life… that sounds like a perfect combo… and your boys will love nyc!!
You guys deserve a nice vacation and a great blend of mountains of city. Have a fantastic time. 🙂
This is one of those years where we will be satisfied with our winter migration to the desert because we are having to do some remodeling there and that will blow the budget. I guess at this stage of life, everyday is a holiday! Looking forward to that surprise!
That is a nice attitude! Everyday could be a holiday, somehow!
nice… you have the comfort of a familiar place there.. that makes it additionally relaxing..
I will go to Utah for work and will take 5 extra days in connection with that trip. Other that that, no real summer vacations for me. I have a PhD student coming to work with me for a couple of months (arriving this week), so I decided to postpone my holidays.
Living in Norway means that July at the office is rather empty –which is good! I do not have as many meetings as in other times of the year and I manage to do more real work! <– some math / physics / coding… smiles … I might combine science with poetry during my free time.
nice… combining science and poetry sounds wonderful… and oy… math/physics coding sounds like hard work to me… emjoy the utah trip!!
I hope you take some days off in Utah – so much to see there… To do science and poetry together.. That sounds fun
Look forward to reading the results!
Three years! How wonderful! You have all worked so hard and have done so much for the poetic community. Kudos to you all for a job well done. I am happy the Pub will be closed for a well-deserved break, and happy that you will get to attend an urban sketching workshop, Claudia. You will go home inspired from it! Yay!
three years indeed – wow – it only works cause we’re having such a dedicated and awesome team…
I think the new arrangement for posts is working well for a lot of people..so the anniversary will partly celebrate the changes that were made, making it an even stronger website. And, the breaks are very important!
It sounds like you will have so much to sketch in Oxford, Claudia! Have a wonderful time!
thanks kathy – i’m so looking forward to it… already Very excited…smiles
Hi, Claudia! Yo that urban sketch workshop sounds awesome! take me with ya? hahah… only plans I know at the moment are my friend’s graduation party… boy does time fly; I met him when he was 4 and now he’s going to college soon… makin me feel old. I’m sure I’ll be gettin into some trouble too… Super excited about the 3yr celebration, tho… seems like yesterday when you guys started this and I missed the 1st night. lol
ha – i can smuggle you in my suitcase… smiles
have fun at the graduation party!!!
I always get absurdly excited over the summer holidays – and the reality is invariably a little different from what I expected. Still, a holiday in Crete to see my older son’s godparents is on the cards, as are swimming lessons and pool-hopping again (exhausting but fun Mum/sons bonding experience we did last summer), and – fingers crossed – Montreux Jazz Festival. Don’t have tickets, but will just show up on the day and get steeped in the atmosphere…
Winter in Oz ….
Winter wake-up
dewdrops on clover
and cobwebs bejeweled
translucent bubbles
and mist-shrouded pools
fog that clings to
the valleys and dells
and musical drippings
that mizzle the fells
crystalline echoes
of the Bellbirds bright call
soft winter sunshine
that glistens on all
verdant grass needing a cut
tranquility dawning
as winter wakes up;
sharonlee
hello all..it’s nice to read so many holiday plans..i wish you all happy holidays.Enjoy your vacation where ever you are planning to go. Here in India our vacation got over and we all are back to our regular routine.
One holiday I can never forget is when we had gone to a jungle resort and we went for an early morning forest ride and our jeep got stuck in a small stream and we had to take a long route in the forest by foot!! My younger daughter was just 2 years old and the elder one was 5..I thought we all will be eaten by a tiger ..we walked for three hours and finally came to civilization. I always thank almighty for bringing us back safely.
My congratulations to dVerse team for the 3rd year anniversary..you all have done a super job. Keep it up..smiles..now you all have fun:)
Exciting we’re nearing the three year mark – what dedication from everyone but especially Brian and Claudia who have sacrificed so much..so very much..for this community. We all owe you an enormous thank you. Without this community so many of us would have lapsed into the laziness that one is prone to, and written not nearly so much.
As to vacation this year – it is upon us, isn’t it. If I get one it will be mid-autumn. I hope to go to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and perhaps Prague. It hasn’t been planned or booked yet so we shall see. I don’t want to wait much longer for the trip my heart wants to take, but I will have to see what I can do.
Have fun in London..as always
