Lillian here . . . delighted to host today’s Quadrille.
Thursday we celebrate Thanksgiving in the US. It’s a wonderful holiday – sans the pressure and decadence of gifts. We always go to Chicago for the annual Hallberg gathering, complete with traditional turkey dinner.
So what does that have to do with a spoiler alert???? Well, around this time of year, I start to think about Christmas and putting up my tree. It’s really a memory tree. Many ornaments are from generations past. Some are handmade by my kids when they were young, some made by friends. Others were bought on vacations. Then I start thinking of Christmas times past, most especially when are children were little. And one story always comes to mind. It was Christmas Eve when my daughter was 4 (she’s now 44). By herself, she’d decided her father needed new slippers. So I took her shopping and we picked out a nice warm pair of slippers for him. She wrapped the shoe box herself and made the tag, scrawling daddy followed by lots of x’s and o’s. That night, he was delighted to watch her anticipation as he shook the box, looked at it from all angles, and finally said, Hmmmmm . . . I wonder what’s in here? And she yelled, Slippers! Best spoiled ending I’ve ever heard or seen!
You guessed it . . . word for today’s Quadrille is spoil or any form of the word. It cannot, however, be a synonym for the word.
Write a Quadrille – that is a poem with exactly 44 words, not counting the title. The word spoil or a form of the word (IE spoiled, spoils, spoiler) must be in the poem – not in the title.
And in case you’re wondering how the new movie, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindewald ends . . .
Nope. Not to worry. I won’t spoil it for you. But it is a complex plot and lots of fun, most especially seeing a young Dumbledore!
For those of you new to dVerse, here’s what we hope everyone does:
- Write a poem that adheres to the prompt and post to your blog.
- Click on Mr. Linky below to add your name and enter the direct URL to your poem
- On your blog, please provide a link back to dVerse. This enables others to enjoy our prompts, multiplies our readers and thus the responses to all of our poems.
- If you promote your poem on social media, use the tag #dverse poets
- And most importantly, please do read some of the other responses to the prompt and add a short comment or reaction. Everyone likes to be appreciated! The prompt is “live” for several days – as you’ll notice by the comments you’ll receive – so do stop by another day and read a few of the latecomers too!
Happy Quadrille Monday, everyone! Hope to be spoiled by lots of your words today 🙂
Boston is a little grey today — and definitely, with the bare trees, is looking like ole man winter has arrived!
Hello all… I join with a small rhyming ditty of romance… I needed that for a grey Monday.. do you have anything warm a cold day like this?
Ah…..hot steaming coffee with some Kailua perhaps? Or a hot chocolate?
I think I stay of caffeine this late… cocoa sounds good…
Coming right up! 🙂
Happy Quadrille Monday, Lill and dverse poets everywhere! Not only is Thursday your Thanksgiving Day, it is also my daughter’s birthday and I’ll be travelling down to visit her on Wednesday,. We’l;l be spending the day together and I;ll be babysitting little Lucas while Ellen’s husband takes her out for a meal in the evening. I will be off-line for a few days but back on Saturday to catch up. So I’ll wish all my American friends a happy Thanksgiving now in case I forget tomorrow. 😉
Many thanks for the Thanksgiving wishes, Kim. And do have a WONDERFUL visit with your daughter and grandchild. Watching our children as parents is a joyful thing to do 🙂 Enjoy your time offline.
Thank you, Lill!
I hope you are feeling better Kim!
My ribs have stopped aching from coughing but now every time I cough my head hurts! I think I’ll be feeling a lot better tomorrow and can’t wait for Wednesday, when I’ll see my daughter and grandson. 🙂
Oh my goodness…..I did not know you’ve been ill. Yes….get better quickly so you can truly enjoy that visit! 🙂
Thank you, Lill. 🙂
Thank you, Linda. 🙂
Great prompt! It’s nice to be here tonight, love quadrille night. Have a great Thanksgiving – how nice to have a celebration that’s not linked to buying gifts, or to a particular religion – a celebration everyone can share.
Thank you, Sarah. Yes, that’s exactly why Thanksgiving is my most favorite holiday! Plus…it is a true joy to reconnect with far away family once a year! 🙂
Hello Lillian- Fantastic prompt. It’s wonderful to be here. I hope everyone has a marvelous Thanksgiving!
GLad you like the prompt — and very nice to have you at the pub tonight! 🙂
Good Lord Lillian- I completely spaced it was a Quadrille- LOL. I got caught up in the words… Please, you can delete and I will work on something else, if you want. So sorry about that!
Laughing I am….just looked at your post and it’s super — but way beyond the quadrille. Sometimes when the muse strikes she doesn’t like to have the brakes applied! If you don’t mind…I will delete and hope you will post again! Sorry ’bout that….but feel I have to be consistent with everyone…if it was just a couple words off, that would be different. But as I say, that ole Muse she can run with you! Looking forward to another post from you….spoiling for more fun! 🙂
Thank you, I am so embarrassed. And yes, I’ll work on something. Hopefully, by tomorrow.
Oh my goodness….don’t be embarrassed! Happens to all of us. For me, when it happens, I just call it a senior moment! 🙂
Just enjoy having you here at the pub my dear….so look forward to another post! 🙂
Thank you for hosting and for the prompt Lillian.
LOVEd your post! I’m still smiling, not only from the words but from the wonderful photo! 🙂
thanks Lillian – they are always on my mind.
Thank you for hosting us, Lillian 😊 I’ll be around today and tomorrow to read and comment ❤
PS: And thank you for your loving words on my poem 😘
….a dash of sunny is always good! 🙂
Feeling like making a pie before the apples spoil.
Hah! Well….if my nose recalls, the scent of a baking apple pie, resonating throughout the house, is much preferred to the scent of rotting spoiling smushed apples ‘neath the apple tree at the end of the season! 🙂
Stepping away from the pub for a bit…as we have company stopping by for a glass of wine before a late dinner.
Left the light on and door is open….come on in and have some libations! Pitcher of sangria ready….hot cocoa simmering on the stove too.
Will be back in a bit! Spoil me with some more words, please! 🙂
What a great prompt! Looking forward to reading the contributions tonight…
BTW, sorry to anyone that went to my screwed up link earlier. I entered the URL where my name should have gone. I immefiately posted correctly , but I had to solicit Lillian’s kind help to get my initial blunder removed. Again, sorry!
No problem, Rob! Glad to have you here tonight!
This was a fun one!
Added my entry to the link-a-think-thing but copying here, just because …

Happy Days of Thanks,
Na’ama
Nice to have you join us this evening!
🙂 Always a pleasure!
Thanks so much for hosting this great prompt, Lill! Love your stories, too 🙂 Finally, finally, home for the evening – time to do some reading. Happy Thanksgiving!!
Nice to have you here at the pub, Jilly. Yes…..I do still smile when I think of our family
“slippers” story! 🙂
Hi, y’all! Sorry I did the post and run thing. Places to see and people to go, you know! Lillian, I loved the prompt… it threw me into crazy mode; always a good thing. Nothing to drink tonight — it’s national caffeinated carbonated beverage day. I entered a burp-for-distance event at the local Elks lodge. I never knew elks could belch….
Ohhhhh Charley…you always make me smile! Who knew Elks could burp????
No doubt other elks. 🙂
Do they burp when coming into season?
Only if they drink Dr. Pepper.
Back at the pub for a bit….till we have our late supper and retire for the evening. Will be back on board then again in the morning. But, as always, light will be left on and key under the mat! Come on in to the pub and spoil us with your words! 🙂
An interesting word Lillian. I enjoyed your story (coincidentally about your 44-year old daughter). I was stumped until I remembered California…Happy Thanksgiving to you (I celebrated the Canadian version in October).
Thank you, Janice. Nice to see you at the pub tonight!
Thank you Lillian, great prompt word! Especially for a week where there’s lots of leftovers in the fridge. I tried to channel someone for a bit of fun. I won’t be able to read the trail much until Thursday, but I will come back to do it, honest Johnny, cross my heart, wouldn’t fib ya, would not be smart. Will be back, I think everything will still be fresh. 🙋🏻♀️
ah yes…..we always travel for Thanksgiving and eat our big dinner at a cousin’s in Chicago, so no left-overs for us when we get back to Boston. How I wish I could have a yummy turkey sandwich the week after! 🙂
Howdy from Texas! This is my first time visiting Quadrille Monday. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you, in the US or not. Every day is a day to give thanks, or should be. 🙂
Have a blessed day.
Hello Suzanne! Welcome to dVerse and Happy Thanksgiving to you & your family.
Thank you, Grace. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, too. 🙂
Thank you for hosting, Lillian. Thanksgiving is a favorite of mine, too.
I didn’t want to read anyone’s until I wrote mine, so now I will have quite a bit of catching up to do! 🙂
Glad to see you here at the pub. I do enjoy hosting and seeing all the diverse ideas that come from one itty-bitty prompt! 🙂 Will mosey over to read again now.
🙂
Good Tuesday Lillian- Let’s try this again- LOL. I went macabre with the prompt.
love your story of the daughter who was so happy to reveal her gift! warms my heart so much, such love for her father, a little late to the quadrille but so happy to be reading some lovely poems. Spoiling myself now with a frothy latte while reading.
Happy Thanksgiving!
