Nostalgic picnics on the weekend with the family. Mum packed the food; in a rattan hamper, lined with a satiny blue cloth, it had special compartments and loops for plates and cutlery. Dad drove the car; heading to the beach or waterfalls, a picnic was not complete without that hamper.
breeze-kissed youthful skin
touching the sky with memories
sighing on green grass
Our theme for this week’s haibun is picnic! Share with us a memory from a picnic – your haibun must not be fictional but a real experience!
A picnic does not have to be only outdoors, my kids and I have had indoor picnics on rainy days, when blankets became soft grass, when we ate sandwiches for dinner and drank sweet fizzy drinks to wash down crisps and cookies, picnic food eaten indoors, picnic style! We’d lie on the floor looking up at the ceiling and describe clouds and kites flying overhead. We’d imagine the scent of flowers and sounds of children playing.
A picnic could also be a meal taken outside when the weather is at its most glorious for you, like it may be now, as spring is in full bloom. Some like it on a sunny winter’s day, some like it on a warm summer lunch hour or maybe autumn is when you want to eat as you watch leaves take on a different colour.
Traditional or breaking all the rules, happy or sad, tell us about a memorable picnic.
For some a picnic may not have been associated with good memories, as Thomas Hardy wrote in his poem – “Where the Picnic Was” – yet it still made a statement.
Maybe you had a hilarious picnic experience; we’d love to hear about that too!
I share some picnic themed poems as inspiration.
We brought a rug for sitting on,
Our lunch was in a box.
The sand was warm. We didn’t wear
Hats or shoes or socks.
Waves came curling up the beach.
We waded. It was fun.
Our sandwiches were different kinds.
I dropped my jelly one.
A Lovely Picnic With Friends – Marilyn Lott
Oh what a lovely day it was
The weather warm and sweet
Packed with friends we cherish
No better folks could you meet
We barbequed dogs on the grill
Out in the bright sunshine
Enjoying the open sky to eat
A meal that was truly fine
Burgers too were grilled just right
Topped with onions and stuff
Just simple tasty scrumptious food
Without a lot of unnecessary fluff
Deviled eggs so perfectly made
With a sprinkle of paprika on top
A delicious blend of flavors
That really truly hit the spot
It was a day we will remember
Good food, good friends together
Can’t ask for a more relaxing time
With the gift of perfect fall weather!
Where the Picnic Was by Thomas Hardy
Where we made the fire,
In the summer time,
Of branch and briar
On the hill to the sea
I slowly climb
Through winter mire,
And scan and trace
The forsaken place
Quite readily.
Now a cold wind blows,
And the grass is gray,
But the spot still shows
As a burnt circle–aye,
And stick-ends, charred,
Still strew the sward
Whereon I stand,
Last relic of the band
Who came that day!
Yes, I am here
Just as last year,
And the sea breathes brine
From its strange straight line
Up hither, the same
As when we four came.
–But two have wandered far
From this grassy rise
Into urban roar
Where no picnics are,
And one–has shut her eyes
Write a haibun based on the prompt, with 1 to 2 tight paragraphs, ending with a seasonal haiku. Bring the season indoors or take yourselves outdoors; however you choose, the haiku should have a seasonal reference.
Then….:
- Post your haibun to your blog
- Add a link (direct URL address) of your poem via the ‘Mr Linky’ below
- Add the link for the dVerse posting so others can find their way here
- Read and comment on other people’s work to let them know it’s being read
- Most importantly, have fun!
See you at the poetry trail …. Gina

Hello… and soon it’s first of May, which for us is a day of picnics… maybe we will have one.
we have a national holiday on May first and a picnic in the park here sounds a great idea (fingers crossed for no rain!!), hope you get yours!!
Hi Gina and All. Thank you for the light-hearted prompt, Gina. It’s rainy, overcast, and cold today. It will be good to reach back to a warm sunny picnic day.
i wanted to have just that dear Jade, something light and airy, where everyone could share a meaningful day. glad the prompt could add a little sunshine your way.
🙂 and you succeeded, Gina!
Thank you Gina for the nostalgic theme of picnic. Nowadays, its only my hubby and I hiking with some sandwiches and juice for lunch. I recall those happy days when we were out in a picnic and grilling our lunch out in the beach or park when the kids were youngsters.
Thanks for hosting.
i miss those days, when a picnic was a whole day of fun and being together. its had to reenact, these days its always a hurry to get to somewhere and on to other things. your picnic days sound fun , cooking outdoors makes food taste better does it not?!!
What a lovely prompt. You’ve reminded me of a picnic I took with my son, when my daughter was having taster days at primary school. He missed her so much (though he’d never admit it now!). Happy days, eh?
it is those memories I love to read about! preserving with time, they enrich the soul. happy and wonderful days to call upon Sarah, thank you for adding to the joy of this haibun
I’m in a hotel in Wales on my old Kindle, so I won’t comment until I get home. I’m also waiting for news of my father-in-law, who is very clise to death. I will read later.
I am sorry to hear about this sad news Kim, my thoughts are with you, may peace and love surround all of you right now. please take the time you need to just be present with your family,
Thank you, Gina. I’m back home now and he is still hanging on. We’re going to visit him tomorrow.
Lovely lovely!
thank you! hope you will enjoy writing the haibun and haiku

Hi Gina! Thanks for the great prompt….and YESSSSSS……I’m back! What an amazing month we had journeying through China, South Korea and Japan! I did a few posts related to the travel while we were away but was unable to read others’ posts as internet connection was spotty and we were on the go. BUT, tomorrow AM I’ll be back to my reading and commenting and enjoying! Hurrah! Have missed you all. But, I’m certain some of my travel photos will make it into future posts….not today though. I got a little “antsy” to get back 🙂
what a fab journey you must have had, so much culture and new experiences, would be lovely to have them included in future prompts here Lillian! glad to have you back and eager to read! welcome home, safe and happy!
Welcome back, Lillian! Looking forward to hear how the trip inspired you through your poetry and photos.

Thanks for hosting, Gina. I added my memories of the only picnics I recall as a child.
lovely to read them Frank, those would be the best I recall too
Welcome poets! I am enjoying the lovely writing, the memories and sharing. will be popping in and out today as I juggle time at work and exploring the picnic scenes, thank you all for contributing.
Indoors picnic! This is great, but I never thought about it before. Now my kids are big, they will not enjoy, maybe I should try with hubby. Lovely poems as usual! 🙂
hi Elizabeth! you’d be surprised about how much they would enjoy indoor picnics, but a romantic one with hubby sounds grand too!
thanks for a great prompt Gina … trouble will be choosing which one to feature as picnics are my favourite social interaction after walks! Enjoyed a couple indoors but have many special memories to select from 🙂
picnics are fabulous, weather and time permitting i’d go for more with my kids. i cannot wait to read your offerings, they are always a delight and so informative
lol maybe a bit too revealing as picnics are a major past time with our weather 🙂
i loved the picnics and patio culture in New Zealand, not as humid as Malaysia so it was really lovely to spend a day dining and drinking outdoors.
yes that’s often what we do … why sit inside when the outdoors call 🙂
Thanks for hosting, Gina. I enjoyed this prompt. It reminded me of the first picnic my husband and I had together, just last year. 🙂
i appreciate your visit, that must have been quite a memorable picnic, the first of many i hope!

Thank you for hosting, Gina. I lovely prompt. I didn’t have time to get this up last night. I’ll be back to read in a bit.
*a lovely prompt. 🙂
lovely to see you here Merril. not to worry, will look forward to seeing you on the poetry trail. life has those moments that just need our attention, i have had more of that recently. so do understand, have a lovely day ahead
You, too, Gina.
Thanx Gina. Fun poems. I love reading Haibun because they are short and actually intended for the reader to understand. And better yet, nonfiction so that I can actually taste some of the lives of our various writers here on d’Verse Poets. Thank you for hosting.
i also appreciate the haibun for those reasons, the non fiction writing, its very heartfelt and connects humanity on so many different levels yet on closer scrutiny we are quite the same. glad you enjoy haibun, my most favourite form of writing.
Great and interesting and thanks for sharing
happy to have you here!
