Welcome to our first OpenLinkNight for 2020! I am happy to serve you our Canadian ice wine, fresh fruits and gingerbread cookies. Do you have any writing goal this year? Let us know in the comments below. Here’s to another year of happy poeming, sharing and reading the magic of words in our community.
OpenLinkNight is your opportunity to link 1 poem of your choice as this is no prompt-day. For those who missed the Mr Linky deadline this Tuesday’s poetics about “Let’s get elemental”, or any poetry prompts that you have missed in the past, this is the opportunity to share your poem. Out of courtesy, please link back to dVerse Poets Pub if you are sharing your poem.
White-Eyes
BY MARY OLIVER
In winter
all the singing is in
the tops of the trees
where the wind-bird
with its white eyes
shoves and pushes
among the branches.
Like any of us
he wants to go to sleep,
but he’s restless—
he has an idea,
and slowly it unfolds
from under his beating wings
as long as he stays awake.
But his big, round music, after all,
is too breathy to last.
So, it’s over.
In the pine-crown
he makes his nest,
he’s done all he can.
I don’t know the name of this bird,
I only imagine his glittering beak
tucked in a white wing
while the clouds—
which he has summoned
from the north—
which he has taught
to be mild, and silent—
thicken, and begin to fall
into the world below
like stars, or the feathers
of some unimaginable bird
that loves us,
that is asleep now, and silent—
that has turned itself
into snow.
See you at the poetry trail. ~Grace~

Grace and Bjorn, I’ve been meaning to ask you two what the status is of an book/anthology of the poems we worked on last year? Is there still a plan to do it? Will we be covering more forms for it this year if so? Just wondering.
Grace said:
We will communicate once we have finalize our plans. For the MTB Forms, we will continue with hosting poetry forms as it is our regular activity.
msjadeli said:
Sounds like a plan thank you for the update.

I have no specific writing goal except maybe trying to make my first collection of poems on my aged librarian…
Grace said:
Please, that is a worthy collection of poems Bjorn. I look forward to your compilation of those poems.

Oooo! Wonderful, Björn!

Oh those are so wonderful! I always get a little frisson of delight when I realize that’s what you’re writing about in any given poem.

Hello Grace and All. I love the magical bird in Mary’s poem. Writing goals for 2020: an old yahoo group on Taoism that I formed 20 years ago is no more. Yahoo discontinued it, but thankfully sent me data files with all 5000+ pages. So much of it is filler and duplication (threaded “unsnipped” messages) which is why it’s going to take a while to work through the chaff to get to the grains. Hoping to get it in publishable form at some point but no self-imposed deadlines. I also hope to get better at writing poems and stories and have a plan to start a book this year. sorry for going on and on but you asked! lol. Canadian wine sounds mighty find, I’ll take a glass please.
Grace said:
The review may take forever but it will keep you busy I am sure. Mary’s poems are always magical for me. Sure, a fine glass of canadian ice wine for you!
msjadeli said:
Yes, Grace, I’ve been doing a 20 or so pages a night that breaks down to a few pages left. Cheers on the wine!

Good evening, Grace and fellow poets! After a fairly bright January day, it’s a wet chilly night here in East Anglia. January is a dreary month, especially today, as it is the third anniversary of my mother’s death. However, at the end of the month, my husband and I will be celebrating 27 years of marriage, which balances it out, I suppose. The mild weather has brought hope, but we often have cold snaps. We had the beast from the East just before my grandson was born, when I thought I wouldn’t make it on time. He’ll be two in March! For a small island, Britain has amazingly varied weather. Sometimes we have different weather in our village to the one where my husband works, just 15 minutes away! But I love the variations in weather – a hot topic for us Brits!

Oh yes, I forgot my writing goal – to publish an anthology of poems and increase the sales of my little anthology of short stories and flash fiction.

Oh yes, I hope to publish and anthology of poetry.
Grace said:

Hello Grace and thank you so much for hosting tonight and sharing the beautiful Mary Oliver poem! I have started work on my third collection of poems and images which will hopefully be published before the end of this year. My other goal for 2020 is to write more poems in other languages. I began to write haibun in Dutch near the end of last year and am linking the first one of those here tonight (with an English interpretation). I am looking forward to what everyone else is aiming for and wish you all a very happy OLN xxx
Grace said:
How exciting – writing in another language and publishing it. I wish you good luck on those worthy goals. Happy OLN back to you!

Thank you Grace! xxx

I love writing in other languages, and translating from French or German while trying to keep to the idiom in the original. One of my favorite time-wasters is reading translations from German and then whining to the universe how I’d have done it better lol.
Ali Grimshaw said:
That is truly impressive. I am still working on writing well in my own language. I love that you have goals you are excited about. Good for you.
L. Stevens said:
What an amazing goal, kudos!

no writing goal has formed yet as am off on my travels to new Zealand and once I return it will be Spring here and perhaps some inspiration will start to grow then!
I really love the Mary Oliver poem – thank you for featuring it and for hosting.
Grace said:
She is one of my favorite poets. How nice to have that travel adventure and yes, hopefully some inspiration will grow from that. Good luck and see you soon.

Hi Grace! Thank you for hosting. I just got home from packing at my mom’s apartment in preparation for her move to assisted living next week, and life it a bit hectic. I’ll just have a cup of tea with some of your cookies. Right now I have page proofs for my book on sexual harassment to review, but this year I hope to have more poetry published in journals and also a collection.
Grace said:
Hope all goes well with your mom’s moving to assisted living. I wish you luck on the poetry collection and publication.

Happy New Year everyone! I wrote up a storm over the holidays, and some of the output even made it onto the blog. Chose one for the linky. My only goal right now is to find someone to help me with a limited edition hard book of the wedding poems from my son’s wedding, to gift them with.
Grace said:
That would be a lovely gift for your son’s wedding. All the best.

Hello, Grace, and thanks for the gingerbread cookies…they go well with my tea 🙂 My goals? Continue blogging poetry, submit poems to Lyrical Iowa (annual pub), and attend a writers’ festival/conference this spring. Considering options for self-publishing a collection of poems/haiku/photos…any advice/suggestions from fellow poets?
Grace said:
Self publishing is another way to do it like Amazon or Lulu. You need patience and some technical know how though on putting your document in the format as required. Perhaps other poets who have self published can help you out. Good luck.
lynn__ said:
Thanks, Grace! Yes, any ideas/advice welcome 🙂
L. Stevens said:
My writing goal this year is to be braver and submit more poetry for publication, including compiling a chapbook to enter in writing contests.
Grace said:
Good for you as I see a lot of contests coming up (am on twitter). Another option for you is to check the self publication route. Good luck!
L. Stevens said:
Thank you, I will definitely keep that in mind!

Hi all, thank you all for all the work you put in at dVerse! My goal is to try and put together a poetry collection, which is the same goal as last year!!
But I would also like to do a guest post at dVerse at some point, I have an idea…it just isn’t fully baked yet!..happy new year…JIM
Grace said:
Go for a poetry collection and come up with a deadline. I know – easier said than done. Hope it works out for you this year Jim.
As for being our guest host here, we welcome guest hosting who can meet our requirements. Having a good idea is one and you can check our archives if we have done this in the past. Another important pre-requisite is being active in commenting in both blogger and WP platforms. For us engagement with other poets is important so extra effort must be made to reach out to other poets, even if this means creating another profile.

Grace,
Thanks for hosting. Also, thanks to all of the hosts who do a great job of reading and responding to folks that participate. It really feels like a community when there is feedback and questions going back and forth. I don’t always write about all the prompts but I always read the posts and appreciate the learning and wonderful poems like the Mary Oliver poem you shared tonight. I am so excited to be taking a poetry class with the current Oregon Poet Laureate, Kim Stafford in February. I would also like to publish a chapbook and am interested in learning from others.
Grace said:
Thanks for joining us.
How exciting to join the poetry class! Best of luck in writing poems fo the chapbook.
