Seurat’s Sunday Afternoon On The Island Of La Grande Jatte
European Summertime began yesterday, and the weather is already looking brighter. It’s such a shame that we can’t get out and about, meet up with friends for a coffee and a chat. But we do have our virtual pub!
I’m Kim from Writing in North Norfolk, your host for this Haibun Monday. For my challenge, I ask you to go back into your archives to search for an autobiographical poem, one of which you are particularly fond or one that lends itself to the task in hand.
Write a prose background to your chosen poem, giving us more details of when and where it happened, who else was involved, the how and the why, including a link to the original poem if you wish, and then sum up the poem in a haiku. Aim to write no more than three tight paragraphs, followed by a traditional haiku that includes reference to the season.
If you are new, here’s how to join in:
- Write a haibun in response to the challenge.
- Remember to include a link back to the dVerse Poets Pub from your blog.
- Enter your name and a link directly to your haibun by clicking Mr Linky below, and check the little box to accept the use/privacy policy.
- You will find links to other poets and more will join so check back later to read their haibun.
- Read and comment on other poets’ work – we all come here to have our poems read.
- Comment and participate in our discussion below, if you like. We are a friendly bunch of poets.
Good evening everyone. The bar is open and I’m looking forward to reading your haibun over a liqueur coffee – I’m having mine with Baileys!

I am having some tea tonight… days are long again. with daylight I will cope a while more.
It’s weird suddenly turning the clock forward and calling it summertime in the bleakness of the pandemic. What kind of tea would you like, Bjorn?
Hi Kim- Thanks so much for hosting during such a strange time for us all. Great prompt, I will have to go back through my poems, and find something! I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy.
I’m staying indoors still and my husband is going to work, getting the shopping in and making me delicious oat cookies! Take your time on this one – it’s up for the week.
Perfect!
Hello Kim and All. It make take a bit or may not to carry out the instructions. In the meantime, Baileys in hot rooibos would be perfect please!
Take you time, Lisa, you have all week. Baileys in hot rooibos coming up!
Cheers, KIm!
That should say ‘take your time’!

I love the long evenings…I think this will be a very interesting prompt, Kim. Looking forward to doing some reading!
I love the long evenings too. I think people are going through their archives carefully. I’m waiting patiently for the next haibun. 🙂
This sounds like a fun prompt! I will see what happens. 🙂
You have plenty of time – the prompt stays open until Sunday. I’m looking forward to reading more over the coming days.

Kim, I have to say this was so therapeutic. To remember a happy time and escape all the news of today. Thank you so much.
I’m so pleased you’ve got something positive and liberating from the prompt, Linda!
I smiled when I saw the painting, and then went off down a dead end wondering where i’d find a suitable poem, doubting that there even was one. I’ve written probably thousands of poems and they are in files somewhere but in no order, just long strings of words, and mainly untitled. So I wrote two new ones.
No problem, Jane. I enjoyed both!
Good, I’m glad 🙂
I’m not sleeping well at the moment and our clocks went forward this weekend, so my head is all over the place. I might have to step away from the computer screen in a while to give my eyes a rest. I will be back in the morning to read more of your autobiographical haibun.
Interesting prompt thanks Kim, and I totally love Joni 🙂
Hope you had a good sleep, know you will get around to us all as time permits, take care!
Thank you, Kate, and I love sharing Joni – I’ve loved her for fifty years! Surprisingly, I managed to sleep until just before six this morning and didn’t get up once during the night, which is unusual for me. I’ve had a cup of cranberyy and blood orange tea and am ready to read and comment now. 🙂
glad you slept well, I think most are having interrupted sleep at this time … just when we need our rest most 🙂
Thanks for hosting, Kim. I really enjoyed looking back through my poetry over the years. Finally had to do a “search” using the words “self portrait.” It seems my poetry blog just celebrated a 5-year anniversary and several weeks ago I received notification of my 1000th poem! Eeeegads I’m getting old!
Fun prompt….I’m going to read some now and more in the morning. Stay safe. Keep writing and carry on 🙂
Don’t look at the years and numbers of poems as getting old, Lill, look at them as recognition of your prolific writing! I’m glad you enjoyed going back through your archives. It’s morning here now, and I’m about to read and comment. Sleep tight and stay safe!

This is a great prompt, Kim. Specific, yet open-ended. It was interesting to see what and how often I’ve written about myself! (K)
Thank you, Kerfe. I’ll be back to read later.
