Welcome to OpenLinkNight everyone! As you know OpenLinkNight is your opportunity to link 1 poem of your choice as this is no prompt-day. For those who missed the Mr Linky deadline this Tuesday’s poetics “Back to Life” or any poetry prompts that you have missed in the past, this is the opportunity to share your poem. Out of courtesy, please link back to dVerse Poets Pub if you are sharing your poem.
We are living in extraordinary pandemic and protest times aren’t we? Last weekend, there were protest marches in our major cities in Canada. While reading on the current issues, I came across 3 poems inspired by the famous line, I can’t breathe by George Floyd. For me words become more powerful when it is read with heartfelt emotions and passion.
I. This poem is by Laura Camilleri in her IG account and beautifully read by her friend, Pele Newell (Facebook video). Pele Newell IG account: https://www.instagram.com/pelenewell/.
II. This poem by Michael Tyler was given an emotional reading by our NBA team, Toronto Raptors here:
I can’t breathe
It’s a simple phrase
I can’t breathe
A little plea that prays
I can’t breathe
A call to recognize
I can’t breathe
The fear that’s in my eyes
I can’t breathe
One man’s life in a sidewalk check
I can’t breathe
Ended by a knee on the neck
I can’t breathe
Look around to those you see
I can’t breathe
See yourself as you see me
If I am the next to die
I can’t breathe
Ask yourself the reason why
Let’s all breathe
Let’s all rise above
Let’s all breathe
With newfound hope, and unbound love.

Good evening all and thank you to Grace for hosting. I hope your Internet connection is working again – I know how frustrating those problems can be.
Thank you Kim. Hope all is well.

Opening the pub tonight as Grace may be a bit late. Step right up…..refreshing drinks available.
Challenging times we are in…..sharing words across the globe to unite in compassion and caring.
Well….my internet connection appears to be doing double duty tonight! Hello Kim and all dVerse folks.
Hi Lill! I hope you are keeping well. I’ve been following your goosr stories. How are the goslings faring?
Thank you Lillian for the double double welcome. Yes, we are all united in compassion- that is my hope.
Ice tea for me, Lillian! Maybe a little splash of something extra…
Wow, Grace – powerful readings. Thank you for sharing these with us.
You are very welcome. The young people lead the way with their passion.
Loved the poem. Words are really like magic, symbols that give purpose, hope, make our narrative. Unites us. But also can enslave us, control our opportunity to live life as free communities of people, making us depressed computer parts with only one way to freedom. Money. Oh shi.. Sorry, went on a rant and ramble gear.. Open Night?
It cuts both ways but I am on the optimism and compassion side. Thanks for joining OLN!
I tend to the optimistic side as well, so society changes, as individual worlds intersect, creating and influencing others absorbing and emitting, learning and teaching.
To change into supportive instead of competition- mentality. I don’t believe humans basic nature to be nothing but mutable and ever flowing, not ruthless and selfish by nature. We are pack animals, we need others, that is how a sane species would do. Make the story about us and the wonder and awe of it all, and imagine what we could achieve if we would work together and let money go, focus on human basic well-being, then advancing, together. But our minds have a disease, ego leads instead of works for you. Shit.. rambling aagain.. Back in work, summer and going in gears! But to my defense I didn’t make anyone read this! ;-P
Hello all- I’ll have to post and read later as I have an appointment this afternoon. Have a great evening!
Linda, thank you and hope all is well.
I have my fingers crossed, Linda, although it plays havoc with my typing, which isn’t wonderful anyway!
Smiling!
Linda, isn’t it nice to have appointments again? I got a call from my hairdresser yesterday morning. I’m on the books for the 25th! Yay!
Good for you! Ours are not yet opened yet.

Yesterday’s poem
Hello Grace and All. A little late to the pub this afternoon. Just got back from a beautiful bike ride. Haven’t “mapped my ride” to see how far it was yet, but it was a fer piece. The two videos of poetry readings are powerful, especially the second one. To see faces saying the words of pain gives them that much more impact. Hoping all are free to breathe today, tomorrow, and every day afterwords, “With newfound hope, and unbound love.”
Enjoy our summer warmth outside. Yes, I love that group reading by my favorite NBA team & organization, Toronto Raptors. Yes, let’s all breathe together, today and tomorrow.
Thanks for sharing these poems. The one I’m sharing today is also addressing a hard topic. While I love lighthearted poetry, sometimes it is the best medium for challenging topics and perspectives that need to be shared.
Yes, we need to express ourselves sometimes with hard topics. My poem inspired by this post, is not even complete yet. Powerful and moving themes take a lot from me. Thanks for being here.
I look forward to reading what you are writing. I agree that writing about hard topics takes a lot. Sometimes I think too myself “Why am I so exhausted?” Then I remember what I’ve been writing about and it all makes sense.
Grace, thanks for hosting. So much going on. I have a friend begging me to write about the garden, and not about the pandemic or the protests or the deaths. But I write what I write, the words lead me; I just follow them.
My poem inspired by this post is not even complete yet. Write what moves and inspires you, I say. Thanks for joining us.
Very moving poems thanks Grace, decided to link one from an Aussie man speaking to the subtle prejudices they have to endure on a daily/weekly basis.
Adam Goodes referred to in the poem is an elite footballer who was booed out of the game. I always wondered why the officials never stopped the booing. They said the right things to Adam but never made a public denouncement. Now I realise that their gate takings leapt so money kept them silent …
I am looking forward to reading this. I am just glad that our sports organization which have a huge platform are making changes, taking inputs from not just the players but the staff too. Thanks for sharing.
ours are in panic fearing they will lose all their crowds/fans due to pandemic fears …
I will be editing my post to include your share. Powerful and moving!
thanks so much Grace, I’m am so glad that his work is getting a greater audience!
Thanks for hosting Grace. (K)
