It’s Tuesday, the dVerse Poets Pub bar is open (with a choice of popular drinks and snacks), and I’m Kim from writinginnorthnorfolk. I’d like to welcome you to Poetics and introduce you to a rather long poem by Australian poet Les Murray, entitled ‘The Quality of Sprawl’.
It’s also the title of his book of essays, opinions, thoughts and musings about Australia.
Les Murray’s poem is based on a kind of list of his personal definitions of ‘sprawl’. It has a great title and is a neat combination of apparent opposites: in the poem, he values ‘sprawl’ for its unpredictability, individuality and freedom from the restraints of convention.
The challenge is to write a poem on the quality of a something (noun, verb, adjective but not ‘sprawl’) using the same format of title: ‘The Quality of…’; I’ve included a short list of suggestions below, but it’s fun to come up with one of your own.
- lazy
- cool
- silence
- dust
- feet
- dog/cat
- smile
- soup
I would like you to emulate the format of the poem, starting each stanza with ‘[Word] is/does’; however, your poem doesn’t have to be quite so long.
If you are new to dVerse and/or Poetics, here’s how to join in:

Good evening and welcome to Poetics. As our example poem is by an serving up Australian poet, I’m serving up ice cold tinnies and quality food from the barbie. I’m excited about the poems we’ll be sharing today.
Hi Kim. Thanks for the challenge for Poetics today. I hope I did it right as it was an out of the box kind of writing for me. Ice cold tinnies would be great.
Your poem was perfect, An ice cold tinny coming up, Grace!
Loved the prompt, Kim 😀 I am looking forward to reading everyone’s entries! Hot chocolate for me please ❤️❤️
Hot chocolate on its way – would you like whipped cream and sprinkles with that?
Yes please! ❤️❤️
Thanks for this, Kim!
I’m so glad you’ve joined us, Melissa, and look forward to your poem.
Hello Kim and All. Excellent prompt that I know will generate a lot of good poetry. Not sure what tinnies are but maybe drinks of some kind? I’ll take an ice cold tinnie but no beer unless it is ginger beer please.
Tinnies are cans of lager, usually Four X. Ginger beer is also available, Lisa, and one is coming your way!
Oh ok on Tinnies. Cheers!

A brilliant prompt Kim and cat got me going… but too cold here tonight for anything but a hot choc please
Same here, Laura. I can’t believe the temperature here. Apparently it’s the same all up the east coast. I’ll add some Tia Maria to your hot chocolate – would you like some whipped cream (that ‘s a reference to Sanaa’s masterpiece!).
Aww! Thank you, Kim 😍😍
Wow… that is a lot of sprawl! A challenging prompt, Kim. Thanks for hosting.
It looks a lot but your don’t have to write quite so much, Dwight.
I am sure it will be shorter!
Fantastical prompt, Kim! Thank you for hosting. I think I’ll try an ice cold tinnie, perhaps there is a fruity blend.
Thanks Mish! Tinnies are cans of lager and I know that there are fruity versions, so I’ll dig deep into the fridge and see what I can find. 🙂
Sounds wonderful. Thank you!

Hello Kim. A wonderful prompt. Mine is more of a stream of consciousness write as I have been very busy this entire weekend. My husband sprained his knee and hospital visits kept me occupied.
That’s OK, Punam, I look forward to reading it. I hope your husband isn’t in too much pain.

Sorry, I didn’t realise we had to use the exact words ‘The quality of…’ in the title. I’ll change it if you’d rather.
That’s fine with me, Jane. I do like poems to be unique.

Hello… I missed this as it was a holiday yesterday and I spent the evening doing other things. I think I want to use the prompt for OLN… or combining with something else. Spring is a busy time in Sweden.
Good morning, Björn. Not a problem. I look forward to reading your quality poem.

Thank you for Les Murray Kim, that poem is packed with so many references, I think that RR was sold at auction in 2011, so many cultural references. And a great prompt.
I thought you might like it, Paul!
