Hello dVerse Poets!
Sanaa here (aka adashofsunny) to rekindle your muse this evening, the month of August has always been symbolic for me, be it in terms of introspection or the fact that it is monsoon in the Southern region of Asia.
As Poets, we are forever in search of new ways of writing poetry, which is why today we will be discussing Amber Rose Tamblyn and the art of creating visuals.
Born on May 14, 1983, she is an American actress, author, poet, and film director. The first ever role which she played in a film was 2005’s “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” as Tibby Rollins, co-starring Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera, and Blake Lively.
The film features four best friends who make plans to stay connected with each other as their lives start off in different directions.
Amber Rose Tamblyn also appeared in the Japan-set The Grudge 2 which released on October 13, 2006, and debuted in the #1 spot at the North American box office.

Her poetry is incredibly unique and descriptive. When asked where the power lies when it comes to writing, Amber Rose answered, “when it makes you feel every human emotion all at once.”
Here are two excerpts from her poems:
We grieve for every building of our boroughs,
from section eight to the unfinished skyscraper’s crane.
Buildings busting with bodies or abandoned by them:
bodies that dance, bodies that sleep,
bodies that virtual meet, eat and drink.
Bodies that cease.
We grieve the gravity
of having to die alone
in a city built on never having to be.
And though our bridges are orphaned arches
left to hold up the sky’s condolences,
they still do connect us.
~ from “To A New Dawning.”
To say nothing of the owl who’s been here for years. I hear him
when I’m trying to write about the deaths I’ve admired.
I hear him when the clothed me no longer recognizes
the naked. I hear him while writing and shitting and sleeping
where my mother’s seven guitars sleep.
I hear him in my parent’s house,
their walls covered in my many faces,
traces of decades of complacence.
~from “Epilogue.”

Observe how she creates visuals by employing unexpected descriptions in her poems. She is the co-founder of ‘Write Now Poetry Society’ and author of several poetry collections. Her third collection is a hybrid of poetry and art called “Dark Sparkler” which explores the lives and death of child star actresses.
For Today’s Poetics, I want you all to write in the style of Amber Rose Tamblyn and create visuals of your own. Pour out the first thought, the first thing that comes to mind and let the words take you forward.
Feel free to write about darker (more under-rated) subjects. The aim here is to explore the “human condition,” and to write spontaneously. Shall we?

Thank you for a most intriguing challenge! Cannot wait to dive in. PS, I had a HUGE crush on her actor father Russ, back in the day. A talented actor as well.

Great prompt idea Sanaa and thank you for hosting. Fascinating that you’ve touched on a poet who combines poetry and art in writing her book, “Dark Sparkler”. I will definitely have to secure that book. Thank you for exposing me to it. To me, poetry and art is a natural symbiotic combination. Wonderful bedfellows. Anyone has been to my Image and Verse site in the past two decades, knows that for me, art and poetry do not exist separately very effectively. One is constantly calling to the other to join. So thank you for hosting again and great prompt! 🙂👍🏼✌🏼🫶🏼

Fascinating prompt Sanaa fascinating poet. In the spirit of her work, regarding the tragedies of the young, I wrote this poem from what I knew. Not sure if it was what you were looking for or if it really reflects Amber Rose the poet — it’s simply what evolved as I wrote, pointed in the directions of youth and tragefy. Thank you for hosting my friend. ✌🏼
sanaarizvi said:
It was singularly the most powerful, poignant poem I have read in a while, Rob! Thank you for writing to the prompt ❤️❤️
