Good afternoon, poets! Welcome to another Haibun Monday! I am Frank Tassone, your host, and today, let’s talk about something extraordinary: a Super Blue Moon!

Why, you ask? Here is a quick explanation:

Full Moon (exactly so at 9:36 p.m. EDT). Writes Gianluca Masi, “The 31 August full Moon will be the third supermoon of 2023, but it will be the largest of the year. In addition, being the second full Moon of this month, it is also a so-called blue moon. Having two supermoons in the same month is relatively rare: last time was in 2018, next time will be in 2037.”

“But wait! There’s more!

Blue Moon meets Saturn

The August 30 Blue Moon will light the sky around it, blotting out all but the brightest stars. This month, however, a point of light shines nearby. Look carefully in the bright moonlight, and you’ll see not a star, but Saturn, the 6th planet from the sun. Also, Saturn lies opposite the sun, as seen from Earth, three days earlier on August 27. In other words, Earth passes between Saturn and the sun. For this reason, astronomers call it an opposition of Saturn.

Such a rare astronomical occurrence merits our attention, right? After all, poets have written about the full moon since the dawn of poetry. How can we pass up such an opportunity for a Super Blue Moon?

Speaking of haijin that have been inspired by the moon:

in a Blue Moon

Just once, at the end of June, a blue moon can change everything . . .so that the sense of summer (crickets calling to an oblique moon) can be sensed as summer, and time–just once– in spite of the shattering speed of the earth’s rotation as we careen through a darkening galaxy, seems to stand almost perfectly still and, for a split second, stop.

True Love

by Roberta Beary, Bethesda, MD

After giving the dog a bath in the basement tub he comes to me with his arms open wide. Smelling of wet dog, he plants a sloppy kiss on my left breast. Followed by a kiss where my right breast used to be. Now I smell of wet dog.

Today, let’s reflect on this upcoming Super Blue Moon! Write a haibun that alludes a Super Blue Moon, in any way you can relate.

New to haibun? The form consists of one to a few paragraphs of prose—usually written in the present tense—that evoke an experience and are often non-fictional/autobiographical. They may be preceded or followed by one or more haiku—nature-based, using a seasonal image—that complement without directly repeating what the prose stated.
