Greetings everyone! Mish here bringing you “Open Link Night”, a chance to share ONE poem with your fellow poets in the pub. There is no specific theme or form required. Feel free to write in response to a prompt you may have missed this week.
Fall has made its debut here in southern Ontario, and as usual, the change at first is quite subtle. Summer still peeks in from time to time. Soon the leaves will dazzle in spectacular shades – burgundy, brown, golden yellow, neon orange, purple and scarlet red…. before taking the plunge. The air picks up a chill that prepares us for winter. Green will fade as we choose the best weekend to do our final grass cutting and storage of all things summery. We might have just finished the last of our canning of pickles and tomatoes before they shrivel on the vine. Many are already adorning their porches with pumpkins, and Thanksgiving decorations.
Now of course the squirrels are busier than ever hoarding nuts and hiding them underground. A lady across the street from us regularly feeds them peanuts and large walnuts in the shell. Every day they cross the street (without looking) carrying their stash to our treed yard, their preferred place of residence. What I find most interesting is their struggle to decide whether to eat their little treasures right away or to bury them for tougher times. Actually I find squirrel behaviour quite interesting and comical in general. A few photos to prove my point…..

Hello everyone! At the pub today I’m serving up some fresh apple fritters, caramel corn and Canadian butter tarts. My son’s girlfriend is visiting from the Philippines. She gave a thumbs up to the butter tarts! Of course we have any beverage you desire. Looking forward to your poetry.
👋🏻 Mish! Those butter tarts sound delicious. I’ll have one, please. And may I ask why are your squirrels so amazing? I feel deprived.
Hi Melissa! One butter tart coming up. They are quite sweet. “Our squirrels” are definitely nutty and entertaining.
Mmmh, you had me at caramel corn. 😉 Thank you for hosting, Mish!
My pleasure. Thanks for dropping in, Miriam. Passing you the bowl.
Thanks 🙂 Yum!
Its suppertime here and I’ve just eaten so just a hot chocolate please- without cream and nut sprinkles – the squirrels can have those (great images BTW)
Hello Laura…hot chocolate coming your way. The squirrels say thanks. 😉
Hi Mish, thank you for hosting my friend. I, for years, waged a little ongoing skirmish with my squirrel friends, in my valiant efforts to feed the many wonderful types of birds found here in the of the Pacific Northwest. I think squirrels and those ever chattery smaller pine squirrels are cute, but they are all possessed of diabolic skills when it comes to overcoming any and all obstacles, to pilfer bird seeds. Somewhere I have an old poem I wrote about just such an encounter. Perhaps I will dig that out, maybe spruce it up fof s rerun? 🙂✌🏼🫶🏼
Nice to see you, Rob. 🙂 I know the struggle! We have attached a cone on the feeder so they are now out of luck. I have a video of one sliding down the pole. Hilarious. I love feeding the birds here too. Cardinals, chickadees (my favourite), golden finch, woodpeckers, etc. make me smile every day.
Good on you Mish, the little buggers still have me stumped. Well, I pulled out that old piece I’d written, used the bones, and re-wrote about 70% of it — so here it is redressed. Hope you like it. 🙂✌🏼🫶🏼
Mmm, I haven’t had an apple fritter in so long. Sounds delicious. With a hot cider please. Those squirrel pictures are really fun.
Hi Maria 🙂 Hot apple cider sounds like a great choice with that fritter. Coming right up!
Thank you for hosting, Mish. I love your squirrels. They look darker than ours (except for the albino one). I like to watch the squirrels around here, too.
I’m going to have to try one of those butter tarts.
Hi Merril…yes you definitely need to try a butter tart. I take them across the border every year for Amercian Thanksgiving for my husband’s family. There is always someone who says…”What are those?!” hahaha. They are delicious. I have notice different coloured squirrels in some of the states and further north here. Interesting little critters.
I’m sure everyone loves them for Thanksgiving. You may or may not know that my family always has our cranberry sauce squirrel for Thanksgiving.
Cranberry sauce squirrel? Ok. I must know more.
Hahaha. It’s a ceramic mold that my mom got when I was very young. When the cranberry sauce is un-molded, it’s in the shape of a squirrel.
Aww…thanks for the clarification. It sounds much better than what I was imagining. 😆
Hahaha. I thought that might be the case.🙂
I was having issues with WP. I deleted my link and added the correct link. (I hope.) 🙂
Looks good to me!
Great! 🙂
Magníficas fotos. El otoño en imágenes y palabras.
Thank you. So glad you enjoyed the photos. I enjoyed translating your comment. 🙂
and I enjoyed understanding in my basic Spanish
Hi, Kim here (after a long absence).
Mine’s a pint of best bitter – don’t worry, I’ve brought my own…
From a fellow Kim – bitter sounds great! But I’m thinking wine for my pub bev of choice tonight. I really liked your poem.
Thank you Kim. I’ve tried to comment on your blog- it is there as anonymous! It’s the comment about the image of him grasping at the rocks of the slippery slope
Hi Kim! Welcome back. Perhaps a glass then……and help yourself to some snacks to go with.

Hi Rog…thanks for sharing your brew. Sounds good. One apple fritter on its way.
Good Evening, Poets! Thanks, Mish, for hosting! I finished a “Meet and Greet” Parent-Teacher night at 8, so I’ll hit the trail tomorrow.
Thanks for joining in, Frank. 🙂 Hope the “Meet and Greet” went well. Enjoy the trail!
I found dVerse from your site, Frank. Thank you!!!
You’re most welcome, Kim!
I’m new to dVerse and couldn’t figure out Mr. Linky… is it the comments here? If so, here’s my poem. A little sad, a little dark. Getting prepared for Mental Health Month and at the end of Suicide Prevention Month, I am. https://glovergardens.com/suicide-regrets-i-missed-the-nuances-of-your-decline/ – in memory of my brother.
Hi Kim. 🙂 Welcome! I added your poem to Mr.Linky for you. Next time…do you see the “Mr. Linky” highlighted in green? Just click on that and fill in your name, url to your poem and click to agree.
I am very sorry for your loss.
Hi Mish, you are so kind! Thank you for doing that. I looked and looked for Mr. Linky last night on my phone but just missed him on the small screen. Today on my laptop, I found him. We will be friends. I’m dreaming of the apple fritters and think a bit of the salty-sweet approach might be nice, so perhaps some rosemary-toasted cashews to go with. And – thank you for your comforting words. Poetry itself is such a comfort, isn’t it?
Mish, I’ll take all of the above! Fritters, caramel corn and butter tarts. Mmm, and whatever you have on tap. Thanks for an open link opportunity to share an old poem about home.
Hello Yvonne.. a frosty mug and treats for you. Thanks for joining in. 🙂
Coming to the feast late, after breakfasting on acorns. Couldn’t resist your squirrels, Mish, and they encouraged me to dig out a doggerel dedicated to my old grey knitted squirrel. Autumn greetings to you
Hello! Lots of snacks left for you. Looking forward to reading your doggerel. Enjoy the poetry trail.
Thank you for hosting us Mish, apple fritters and a whiskey please 🙂
Ohhh….that sounds like an interesting combo. Coming right up. Thanks for joining in, Paul.

Thank you for hosting, Mish. 🙂
