Fruit, Li-young Lee, market, mini-prompt, OLN, one poem, peaches
Hello! This is Michelle Beauchamp (aka Mish at mishunderstood.wordpress.com) I am here to bring you another edition of Open Link Night. As you may know, OLN allows you the opportunity to share ONE poem of your choice with the rest of the dVerse community. There is no particular theme or form required, but you are welcome to use the mini-prompt offered below. If you missed the deadline for a recent prompt, you could use this chance to respond.
Plums and peaches and pears, oh my! These are only a few of the fruits that ripen in southern Ontario during August. We savour every flavour as our summer season peaks and fades so quickly. The local markets are stocked with the sweetest peaches, nectarines and cherries. Lately, we have enjoyed the local farms that offer a U-pick option for strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. Fresh cantaloupe and watermelon are easy to find and the crispiest Gala apples have arrived. My husband’s tomato plants have been providing just enough cherry and grape tomatoes to occasionally toss into a salad or pasta dish.
Fruit has often found its way into poetry to symbolize temptation, love, and abundance but I adore the way Li-Young Lee reflects on the simple joy of fruit-filled days and fleeting moments of life in this poem.
From Blossoms
By Li-Young Lee
From blossoms comes
this brown paper bag of peaches
we bought from the boy
at the bend in the road where we turned toward
signs painted Peaches.
From laden boughs, from hands,
from sweet fellowship in the bins,
comes nectar at the roadside, succulent
peaches we devour, dusty skin and all,
comes the familiar dust of summer, dust we eat.
O, to take what we love inside,
to carry within us an orchard, to eat
not only the skin, but the shade,
not only the sugar, but the days, to hold
the fruit in our hands, adore it, then bite into
the round jubilance of peach.
There are days we live
as if death were nowhere
in the background; from joy
to joy to joy, from wing to wing,
from blossom to blossom to
impossible blossom, to sweet impossible blossom.
For today’s OPTIONAL MINI-PROMPT, you may choose to find inspiration within the lines of “From Blossoms” by doing one of the following:
Option #1 – Write about a similar memory of seasonal fruit, bringing you back to a time, place or person associated with it.
Option #2 – Consider the way the poem eludes to mortality and the preciousness of life in the last stanza and follow your muse with that theme. No fruit required.
However…..my peach-blueberry upside down cake is fresh out of the oven and ready to serve up in the pub!
Here’s how to join in:
- Write one poem and post it to your blog.
- Enter your name and direct link to your poem into Mr. Linky.

Good evening poets, and thank you for hosting, Mish. I’ve linked up an old poem from NaPoWriMo April 2023. A non-alcoholic fruity cocktail would be welcome, please.
Hi Kim! One fruity cocktail coming up and I think I will join you.
Cheers!
Welcome to OLN! Hope you are doing well in your part of the world. It is extremely hot and humid here. With that said, I did manage to bake a peach-blueberry upside down cake to share and of course, the pub is stocked with all of your favourite beverages. Enjoy the poetry trail. 🙂
Hello Mish and All. Would you please give me a (big) slice of peach-blueberry upside down cake? Also a hot rooibos peppermint tea with Baileys? Happy Thursday!
Absolutely, Lisa. Enjoy. The tea sounds extra special 😉 Happy Thursday!
Thank you, and Cheers!
Hello Mish and all! I would love some of that peach-blueberry upside down cake 🥰
Will be here today and tomorrow to read and comment. Happy Thursday! 🩷🩷
Hello Sanaa 🙂 A nice slice is on its way!
Yum
Hi Jane! The cake is still warm. Enjoy.
Good evening, Mish! That is such a luscious looking cake! I would love a huge slice of it.
I am sharing an old reworked poem that fits the prompt.
Hiya Punam 🙂 One larger slice of cake coming up! I shared one from my archives as well. Thanks for joining in.
Thank you so much, Mish. My pleasure to participate.
Thanks for hosting, Michelle (and the cake looks wonderful)!
Welcome and thank you! 🙂
Thank you for hosting, Mish, and hello to all! Your peach and blueberry cake looks scrumptious! It’s been so hot and humid here that I haven’t been doing much baking.
I rewrote a fruit-themed poem for OLN.
Thanks, Merril. It has been a scorcher here too, for a few days now. I loved your poem.
You’re welcome, Mish, and thank you!
Question: Is this an open link night? by that I mean, can anyone post any poem of their choosing? or does it have to stick with the theme? curious. I want to be respectful of the guidelines.
Hi Charlie 🙂 Yes, you may post ANY one poem of your choosing. No particular theme or form is required. The mini-prompt above is completely optional. Thanks for joining in.
Excellent. Thank you, Mish. Have a wonderful and bless day. 🙂
You too…and you’re very welcome.
Hi Mish! And everyone else!🙃 I’ve been waiting for that upside down cake. I want a big slice! Please!
Hey Melissa! I saved a piece just for you. 🙂
Thank you for hosting Mish. I offer an homage to Paris given their wonderful hosting of the Olympics, and a nod to the ‘heat’ of August in The City of Light. 🙂✌🏼🫶🏼
Thanks for stopping in, Rob. Looking forward to reading yours. 🙂
Oh, my, Mish– do you have enough for everyone? Going the extra mile there!
Oh yes, I baked two of those. 😉 One slice coming up. 🙂
Hey dverse poets, here we go again I guess (I was somehow frozen out of commenting on this and many of the linked blogs for more than a year; just managed to get back in). Anyway, trying to comment on the current links, and I’ve gotten something that says “403 Forbidden Access to this resource on the server is denied!” on the first 3 I tried. (Sanaa, Mish, and Lisa). Anyway, really enjoying everyone’s entries.
Hmm…that is very strange. This is happening when you click on the names in Mr. Linky? Only some of them?
I’m not feeling the fruit, so I posted a poem I wrote 3 days ago.
Thanks for the prompt!
No problem at all. We must follow our own muse. Enjoy!
Do you share your peach-blueberry upside-down cake recipe? It sounds poetry-worthy! Thanks for the prompt and I’ll take a slice of that cake and a glass of bubbly.
Which do i like best––the poem or your luscious cake? Guess I’ll declare it a tie. Let’s see if Mr. Linky is still open.
Aww..I’m glad you are enjoying both. Thanks, Judy! 🙂
Thanks for hosting us Mish, and wow – what a cake, a slice would be o so nice 🙂
Hi Paul! Saved you a big slice. 🙂
Woohoo
Mmm, mmm good.
Welcome! 🙂 and thank you.
I’m a bit late to the party -but I was out picking fruit!!!
Haha…then you are allowed to be late. Thanks for joining in, Kim.
Wow! A delicious cake, Mish. Thanks for hosting. 🙂
