Lillian here, delighted to host Tuesday Poetics at dVerse, the virtual pub for writers around the globe!
As a septuagenarian, I was in 8th grade when the television show, Sing Along with Mitch premiered. Running from 1961 to 1964, it was inspired by the popular Sing Along with Mitch record album series. During one week in 1958, the top three albums were Sing Along with Mitch, More Sing Along with Mitch, and Christmas Sing Along with Mitch. Mitch Miller conducted an all male chorus on the albums and on the television show.
We watched television in our small den, my parents sitting on our faux-leather beige couch that pulled out to a “sofa bed” – the kind with the bar that hit you right in the middle of your back when you laid down on it! We had a “blonde console” television: a large light-colored wooden cabinet held our black and white television within its confines. In those days, your television was considered a piece of furniture. Every once in a while, it would “go on the blink” and my dad would telephone our friendly tv repair man. He’d come over, and struggling with the weight of the thing, pull the television cabinet away from the wall. He’d then open up what looked like a large fishing tackle box….the kind with the shelves that spill out of it. It held electronic “tubes” of all sizes. He’d squat behind the tv with his arm out in front of him, holding a mirror so he could see the tv screen’s reflection in it. He’d take our tv’s tubes out one at a time, replacing each one with a new identical tube from his case. Sometimes it took him fifteen minutes to find the “burned out” tube. Other times, it took well over an hour.
Below is a recording from a Sing Along with Mitch album. It sounds exactly like it did many years ago on the television show. And yes, the lyrics were shown on the bottom of the tv screen so you could indeed sing along with Mitch and his chorus! Below, I’ve shared a recording of the song By the Beautiful Sea. I remember singing it with my folks in our den! Take a listen. So – how is this all connected to today’s prompt? Maybe you’ve guessed. We’re going to write poetry about the sea or, if you like, the ocean. There’s no particular form or length….but it must somehow be about the sea/ocean! It could be about an experience you’ve had, a mythic poem about a seafarer, or simply a description of the sea. Or you could write a children’s poem set at the seaside. Remember the wonderful poem written by American poet and writer, Eugene Field: Wynken, Blynken and Nod? Do post your poem to Mr. Linky below. I look forward to feeling the saltwater spray in my face and perhaps hearing some sea gulls as you take us to the sea with your words!
New to dVerse? Need to be refreshed on the rules? Here’s what to do:
- Write a poem that somehow deals with the sea or ocean.
- Post the poem to your blog AND add the exact URL for your poem to Mr. Linky below.
- REMEMBER to either TAG dVerse in your post, or include a link at the end of your poem that leads readers back to dVerse (https://dversepoets.com).
- If you do not TAG or include a link to dVerse at the end of your post, I will gently remind you to do so. After all, this will increase your readership and comments, and others will find dVerse and hopefully join in the fun. If you do not add the TAG or link after my reminder, I will remove your post from Mr. Linky. I do not want to do that! So please do include the TAG or link!
Hello, and thanks for the prompt… I miss living by the sea, so this time I used it as a metaphor.
Nice to see you here today, Bjorn! I surely enjoyed following you and Lotta on your amazing hike! How many days were you out tromping all together?
53 days which is 7 days less than last time
53 days….amazing!!! And I lOVED that last post with the two of you caressing the door of the finish! 🙂
Welcome dVersers! I’m coming to you today from the very tip of Cape Cod, in Provincetown, MA. The unit we always rent for two glorious weeks in September is right on the shore…our deck is just steps into the ocean! So — today I’m serving Sam Adams beer from Boston, New England clam chowder and fresh lobster rolls! Yum! Or of course, we have my usual lemon bars and the pub is equipped with beverages of your choice.
Looking forward to being by the sea/ocean with you today!
Loved the prompt, Lillian! 🥰 Lemon bar for me please.. I am so excited to read what everyone comes up with!
Happy Tuesday 🩷🩷
Lemon bar it is, fresh made I might add! 🙂 Enjoy!
Thank you! 🩷🩷
Enjoyed the prompt, thank you, Lillian. 🙂
So glad you liked it….I figure, looking out at the ocean from where I sit right now, how can you not like writing about the ocean/sea?
Good evening poets, and thank you, Lill, for hosting with an ocean prompt. I would love to try a lobster roll; I’ve never had one.
My husband made the rolls for the pub tonight. He’s doctored up some recipes he got from various cookbooks….of course the standard lobster roll has lobster, mayo, and some celery salt. It’s usually served in a hot dog bun…but we serve it in a brioche bun. He adds spices that he keeps a secret and it is truly yummy! It can be served hot or cold….in the summer, we prefer cold. Hope you enjoy! 😉
Yum!
hi lillian

i am still to catch up with last nights poems get there when i can

Good to see you here, Rob. A Sam Adams and bowl of clam chowder coming right up! Enjoy!!! So glad you enoyed the prompt….not to worry about “catching up” with reading….sometimes time gets away from us. All okay.
Hi Lillian! I’ll have a bowl of clam chowder. I’m not sure if I will be at Live on Saturday. Leland has a soccer game, and it will probably be around that time. I hope to see you all!🤞🏻
Good to see you here, Melissa. Clam chowder coming right up – enjoy! I think Sanaa or Bjorn is hosting LIVE on Saturday. I will let them know.
A little shell-shocked poem available for your viewing pleasure!
Nice to see you here! I will go over to read your poem now!
Hi Lillian and fellow poets – I’ve been out all day in London and only just arrived home and ready for bed and a lobster roll is just what I need after missing meals since breakfast – will be back tomorrow for sea tales reading – thank you for this prompt – I pushed the boat out with this one and sank it 😉
Lobster roll coming right up! Well, for some boats, it’s their time to sink! Good to see you here, Laura. See you tomorrow!
A super challenge, Lillian! I can picture you and hubby vacationing on the P-Town shore! How lovely it must be. Also, I loved reading your Mitch Miller and TV story. Back in 1948, we were the first family in our small village of 1,100 to own a television (if you had known my Dad, you would understand how) and for my 7th birthday party my friends and I were treated to a smiling image of ME on a local show that was broadcast every Saturday. I even remember the host’s name: Russ Severin. I will have a small of serving of everything you offered. WOW.
Sam Adams poured in the beer mug and on the bar for you. Bowl of New England clam chowder and a fresh made lobster roll coming right up!
Those early television sets were really something! I must have been 4 or 5, before I was in school or when I just went half-day, and my favorite tv show was Mr. Winky Dink and Me! Amazing that at 77 I still remember the name….but I suspect it’s because of what happened with that show that it’s seared in my mind. If you watched all the time, you could “join” the Winky Dink club. They sent you a membership card and a special piece of “plastic” — it had the properties of Saran Wrap in that you could put it right on your tv screen, press it on, and it stuck. You did this at the opportune time in the show, when Mr. Winky Dink went on a treasure hunt. You then took the special “crayons” sent with the piece of plastic and connected the dots and voila! You found the treasure with Mr. Winky Dink! Can you guess what happened? I was alone in the den watching my show and forgot to put the “plastic” on the screen and drew right on our tv! My mother was not very happy!
Any how….good to see you here today! PS: I was never on tv…you were a childhood star!
Your story is precious ~~ and funny!
Okay folks! My husband and I are off to dinner in Ptown. Once home, I suspect we will be watching “the debate” and then commentary after. So, the clam chowder is simmering on the stove, lobster fixings are in the fridge ready to put in the brioche rolls on the counter…and the Sam Adams is on tap. Help yourself! I shall see you all in the morning….beside the sea, beside the sea, beside the beautiful sea – or in my case, beside the Atlantic Ocean in Provincetown! I look forward to reading lots of poems tomorrow!
Go Kamala!!!!
Hope their aim is better tonight… 😏 go Kamala! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
She knocked it out of the park! Or should I say, Mr. Trump showed his true colors?
Thank you for hosting Lil. 👍🏼 After my poem about the horrors of drug addiction yesterday, today I went for sappy romanticism. 🙂✌🏼🫶🏼
I love sappy romanticism. Will be reading here as soon as I get my coffee cup in hand! GLAD to see you here Rob….hope things are stable and good for you and your wife.
I love writing about the sea. So calming yet in can be so dramatic ☺️
Exactly! The diversity of poems posted last night was amazing…looking forward to catching up with my reading this morning…as soon as I get my coffee cup in hand! 🙂
Thanks for the prompt Lillian, I made a poem about our time living in Ireland – 10 minutes walk from the sea which I was glad of the opportunity to write about.
It’s the next day but I would love some chowder if there’s some left please…
Plenty of New England chowder on hand….after all, I’m coming from Provincetown on Cape Cod today….amazing how the pub can be in so many places at one time, right? Good to see you here and glad to give you the opportunity to return to Ireland. I’ll be back on the reading trail this morning as soon as I get my coffee cup in hand!
Am back in the pub this morning folks! It’s a beautiful morning in Provincetown. Even though we were up until 12:30 AM after the debate, I still woke up, without an alarm, to watch another day dawn here. So incredibly beautiful!
I live near the sea so this was heaven sent, thank you Lillian.
Lucky you! We love our time in Provincetown each year….right on the ocean.
Yes, there’s nothing like it Lillian 🙂
It’s been too long since I have linked and enjoyed the community of dVerse! And it’s rather serendipitous today as I have just come in from a walk – I carried a notebook so when the words came I could capture them before they escaped. But most of all my heart is at least part ocean, and I live five minutes away from the Atlantic which I visit often on the coast of Rhode Island- so, I hope to see you this weekend! SO glad the poets still gather here!
