Hello! Welcome to Tuesday Poetics at dVerse Poets Pub. Melissa here from Mom With a Blog. Today we will be looking at the “Art of Le Pho”, an artist I discovered through At Sunnyside’s blog of art, music, and other beautiful things. I thank you, friend.💛

Le Pho was born in the city of Hanoi in Vietnam in 1907. He began studying art at the age of 16, and in 1925 he sat for the examination to enter the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts de l’Indochine. He ranked 9th out of 270 candidates.
He studied there under French and Vietnamese artists, honing his skills painting in oil, also learning to paint on silk and learning lacquer art.
Along with its Orientalist nature, I think what initially drew me to his art was the composition and technique he used in creating subtle detail. Many of his works possess a certain surrealistic quality. There is much to be explored.
You may read more about the artist here.

For your Poetics prompt today, I would like you to select one of the artworks I have included in this post, or you may peruse Sunnyside’s selection here. Once you have selected an artwork, write a poem blending ekphrasis and theme (choose one from the list).
- ekphrasis: a literary description of or commentary on a visual work of art
- theme: a subject or topic of discourse or of artistic representation
- women
- flowers
- landscapes
- family

Hello everyone! I hope you enjoy the art I’ve chosen for today’s prompt, and I look forward to reading your poetry. At the bar tonight we have chả cá (chunks of white fish marinated in turmeric, sautéed in butter, and topped with dill and green onion); or bánh xèo (a crispy, golden crepe filled with bean sprouts, pork, and shrimp). We also have a favorite of mine, cà phê sữa nóng, Vietnamese coffee drip brewed into a glass with sweetened condensed milk. Hot or iced (cà phê sua dá). Of course I’ll get whatever else you like.🍜
Good evening poets, and thank you, Melissa, for introducing me to a new artist and his work, which is fresh and different. A hot coffee for me please, it’s quite chilly this evening.
Hello, Kim! It’s getting chilly here, too. One hot coffee coming up!
Thank you, Melissa.
Some of that coffee sounds wonderful … love the images.
Hi Björn! Happy you love them. Enjoy your coffee.😉
Hi Melissa and others. Thanks for the introduction to an artist I had not heard about before. It is late now, so save a helping of each for me, Melissa. I’ll have it in the morning. Right now I will just post and scoot.
Good night everyone. Will catch up tomorrow.
Hi Punam! I’ll save them for you.🙏🏻❤️
🥰🥰 you are a sweetheart.
Thanks for the introduction to this wonderful artist. Hope to come up with words to match the whimsy of this work.
Happy to share his art! I will look forward to reading.🙏🏻
Tomorrow.
Thank you for hosting Melissa. 🙂 I think I might find inspiration from the lady and her parrot, but I am distracted with thoughts of a medical appt, for which I am about to leave. We will see what this evening brings. Power to the pen everyone… 👍🏼✌🏼🫶🏼
I am glad you like that painting. Keeping you in my thoughts, Rob.🙏🏻
Well that was a lovely prompt Melissa, and I saw some really doit justice..
Thank you for introducing me to this artist Melissa. Love the artwork. Would love to try the iced tea with bánh xèo. Hitting the poetry trail now.
Hi Grace. Happy to see you. I am glad you enjoyed the prompt. Here you go!
Couldn’t resist, Melissa so squeezed something onto the page but off to bed now and work in the morning – thanks for the prompt…
Sleep well, my friend.😴
Thank you for this wonderful prompt, Melissa. 🙂 ….and you had me at the white fish for a snack later! I am still full from Thanksgiving leftovers.
I’ll set some aside for you. I’m happy you liked the prompt.🥰
Good Evening – Thanks for an intriguing prompt. I have never seen this artwork before but it definitely is inspiring.
Happy to hear that, Truedessa!😁
I enjoyed this prompt, Melissa! Thanks for hosting and for your creative choice of a prompt!
Thank you for a wonderful prompt and introduction to a fabulous artist, Melissa. 🙂
You’re welcome, Kitty.❤️🙏🏻
Thank you Melissa, lot’s of stimulating choice. I ended with what I would call a loosely ekphrastic effort 🙂
I’m not picky.😁
Thank you for this unusual prompt Melissa. It really brought back memories of a time when the world was a different place.
I remember banh mi and cà phê sữa nóng for breakfast on a balcony looking over the same lake that anh Vũ Lê Phổ painted so many times.
Thanks too for the treats. I’ll have some of your delicious delicacies and share my banh mi (sandwich with lots of savoury bits & pieces) with anyone who wants some. You’ve inspired me to make some prawn, carrot & cabbage gỏi cuốn (rice paper wrapped rolls) for lunch.
Happy days!
I am always happy to lend inspiration to whomever needs it. I am glad, too, for your happy memories. That sounds wonderful. So do the gỏi cuốn!
hi melissa, thank you for the beautiful artwork and theme selections. … ugh, i feel woefully behind in submitting and commenting, but glad to have made it before the deadline. (i think of these little poetry challenges as my homework– in a good way!) ❤ xx
Hi Ren. I understand! I try to keep up as well, mainly because I want to. I keep all the Mr. Linky windows open in my web browser, so that I can answer them at my own pace. Right now I think I have 18 open.🌕
