Greetings, Poets! De Jackson here, aka WhimsyGizmo, and it’s time again for the Quadrille, that pithy little poem of our own making right here at dVerse. In short (pun intended), a Quadrille is a poem of exactly 44 words, not counting the title, including one word we provide.
This week, I thought it would be interesting to use an interrogative word.

What the what? Yep, that’s right, this week I want you to include some form of the word what in your 44-word poem.
Use your piece to tell us what’s up, what you had for breakfast, or what you did on your summer vacation. Ponder what if. Give somebody who deserves it what for. Tell us what came first (The chicken? The egg? That delicious side of bacon?) Ask what on earth? or what the heck? or what in the name of all that is holy?
Or get creative and whatnot. Maybe someone’s got a mega-what smile or walks with a what-tle. Whatever you choose to do with the word, just let your whatsits fly.
Here’s a little poetical inspiration from Shel Silverstein and Elizabeth Barrett Browning (what a pair they would have made, huh?)

If you’re still feeling somewhat trepidatious, or any pause whatsoever, just throw in some sort of whatchamacallit, and call it a day.
New to the Q? Here’s WHAT to do:
Pen us a poem of precisely 44 words (not counting the title), literally including some form of the word what. Post your poem on your own blog, and link up using the Mr. Linky below. Then see what’s up with your fellow poets by paying their poems a visit. Don’t forget, the Quadrille is up all week long, so feel free to come back and read and write some more!
I’ll leave you with some musical inspiration to give your muse a little you-know-what.
What’s Up, 4 Non Blondes
What I’ve Done, Linkin Park
That’s What I Like, Bruno Mars

Whatta Man, Salt-N-Pepa
And then there’s this classic Abbott and Costello bit.
It’s called “Who’s on First,” but…well, you’ll see…

Greetings, Poets! And happy Veterans Day to all who serve and sacrifice, and family members as well.
What’s for snacks at the pub today, you say? Well I’ve got Whatchamallit candy bars and plenty of salty snacks, as well as a cocktail I’m naming the Whatsit. You choose what’s in it, and I’ll make it!
Happy poeming, all. Can’t wait to see what you come up with this week!
Good evening poets, and thank you De for hosting with what is the first interrogative prompt word for the Quadrille. What more can I say?
😉 whatever you please.
May I have an alcohol-free Whatsit, please?
Yes, ma’am. Coming right up. Cheers!
Thanks De!
What, what, what??! Haha. What a versatile prompt word, De, and thank you for it though I went down a dark road with it. I would love a Whatchamallit candy bar, thank you, and a glass of lemonade if you please. Thanks for hosting!
Cheers, Dora. And coming right up, though my own personal tastebuds do not want those two flavors together. 😉
Normally, mine would rebel, but these days I have an unquenchable thirst for lemonade. I have no idea why.😂
Then I shall whip up some homemade right away.
🤗 Wow. 🙌 Cheers❣️
I love this word De. What a creative word to add to the Q list. Thanks for hosting!!!
Thanks so much, Grace. My pleasure.
Oh, I would like to have some whatsit with some whatever and soda please… if you feel up to it you may add a slice of lemon.
You got it, B. Cheers!
hi all
a packet of cheesy wotsit snacks here please.
great prompt sparked my interest
rog
Hi, rog! Cheers!
You wouldn’t believe what I wrote, but it deserves a chocolate sundae.
Mmmmm. That sounds delicious. You got it. Heading over soon to read.
Thanks for the prompt, De. I had trouble restraining my voice on this one. If it creates too much stir, I will take it down. A glass of whatever wine you have, please.
Mish, all voices are welcome here, always.
Yummy Pub fare today! Let’s see ~~~ my drink of choice is white crème de cacao over shaved ice, double gigger please. No snacks required. Unless you have a few pretzels lying around.
You got it, Helen. Glad you’re here. Cheers!
What’s up, my buttercup?
Why you be so down?
When will you find that smile again?
Where’d you find that frown?
What’s the point of grumbling?
Why, it only leaves you flat
When you hide away your happiness
and Where’s the sense in that?
LOVE this. Turn that frown upside down!
Love your poem!!!
I like the joy in this poem.
Thanks for hosting De. GREAT PROMPT!! That is exactly the question that has driven me slightly mad for the past week. 🤔🫣😠😡🤬…😱
Happy to see you here, Rob. Cheers!
De, thanks for a great prompt. It got me writing and I appreciate it. I would love to have a glass of wine. I can’t drink it anymore and at least I could enjoy it virtually.
Thanks for hosting.
Virtual Vino coming right up, Ali. I shall join you. Cheers!
What the devil – it’s now 3 in the morning and I woke with an idea to fulfil your prompt De and nothing would do but to scratch that itch – please serve me a sleeping draught that I may return to sleep – work tomorrow, no! Today…
Wishing you happy poeming and sweet sleep. Cheers!
Thank you for an evergreen prompt word, De. 🙂
My pleasure, Kitty. Heading over soon!
😀
You always do such an incredible job writing these prompts.
Awww, thanks, Chica. 😉
Thank you De, I chose a lighter approach, pun intended 🙂
Needing some “light” in my life this week, Paul. Thank you! Heading over soon…
The URL is to long so I can’t post to Mr Linky. I’m leaving my link here instead: Roberta Writes – Fashion writing challenge, d’Verse Quadrille #212 and fondant trolls
Enjoyed this, Roberta.
Thank you
new to this prompt ♥️
Late to the Q. Thank you for the prompt, De!
Happy to see you here, Merril! Cheers!
😊
Thank you for the prompt. I have one belatedly. Upon reading your post I couldn’t get Dorothy Parker’s phrase out of my head: What fresh Hell is this?
Ha! That’s a good start! Heading over to read soon. Cheers!
What’s on offer behind the bar, Whimsy?
(just posted my response to your inspiring prompt. What?)
Hi, Lesley. I’ve still got some fresh-squeezed lemonade back here. And I can add some vodka, if you please. The Whatchamacallits have almost run out, but I saved one for you. 😉
