Make of it a parka
For your soul.
— Alice Walker, from
Before you knew you owned it
Greetings to all Poet Pubsters assembled here today. Lisa here, as host who is serving up a prompt, goodies, and liquid refreshments. Today will be a Prosery prompt, where you write a prose story instead of a poem, using a given line of poetry to inspire you. Word limit is 144 words, not including title, and the given line must be used without adding or taking away any words in between. Punctuation may be changed.
Lifted from wikipedia:
Alice Malsenior Tallulah-Kate Walker, aka Alice Walker (born February 9, 1944) is an American novelist, short story writer, poet, and social activist. In 1982, she became the first African-American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, which she was awarded for her novel The Color Purple. Over the span of her career, Walker has published seventeen novels and short story collections, twelve non-fiction works, and collections of essays and poetry.
Ever since reading The Color Purple, I feel Ms. Walker near, always ready to listen, to advocate, to speak out for the voiceless, the powerless, and the mute, to let us know we will never be forgotten again. I went on to read, In Search of Our Mother’s Gardens: Womanist Prose, and The Temple of My Familiar. There is poetry in these works, but mostly in prose. Today’s quote is taken from an actual poem of hers.
Staying warm in what feels like an increasingly cold world can be a challenge. Today’s prompt challenges you to look deep and imagine in prose how one may build a parka for the soul.
Here’s how to take part in the Prosery Prompt:
• Write a piece of flash fiction or other prose up of up to or exactly 144 words, including the given line from the poem.
• Post your Prosery piece on your blog and link back to this post.
• Place the link to your actual post (not your blog url) on the Mister Linky page.
• Don’t forget to check the little box to accept use/privacy policy.
• Please visit other blogs and comment on their posts – reciprocation is the life of this challenge!

Welcome to All Pub Poets!
I’m at work but I’d like to stop for a quick drink after if you’ll be in…lol
Welcome, Christine. Of course, please stop in! 🙂
Sorry, I tried leaving a comment Cristine, but I couldn’t do it.
Lovely thought, a coat passed down through generations.
Thanks Bjorn!
Good evening poets and thank you for hosting with an Alice Walker quote, Lisa. I’m afraid that on top of the chest infection I now have gastroenteritis. David took me to the doctor and at first they wanted to send me to hospital. But I’ve been given all sorts of meds and I haven’t eaten a thing since breakfast, which went back down the loo. I was well enough this evening to pop on a piece of prose, but I’m off to bed in a while. I’ll come back in the morning to read and comment.
That sounds really bad… get better and rest
Thanks Björn. I think the illness of the past three weeks left me open to another infection or virus. Gastroenteritis is horrible.
p.s. Welcome, Kim.
Oh Kim, goodness!!!! Take care of yourself; listen to your body; and rest! Thinking of you….
Thank you so much, Lill. I feel a little more human this morning.
Worried about you Kim …. please take care, feel better SOON!
Welcome, Helen. Second that to Kim ❤
Thank you so much, Helen.
Oh dear…hope you recover well….can be long or short depending on the bacteria, or even virus..
Empty due to my tardivity of course….due to my insistence on going haywire in my research for my prosery…3 hrs, honestly, what was I thinking of…
I just finished reading your post. Fascinating research data. I don’t like to think that hate is the strongest dimension of all though. How did you reach that conclusion?
I think it might be. Or maybe not, but there is a force that permits horrific things, especially in the context of war. Think got bit carried away yesterday though. I don’t know id malificent evil exists as a force or dimension, but maybe that is it. The idea that this can be defeated is farical I think, even though there is so much goodness around. O I don’t know…
Ain, maybe that is it, falling into a dimension/altered reality that “permits horrific things.”
Thank you, Ain.
Kim, please go to the hospital if you need to. Fluid loss is no joke.
Hello, as soon as I saw the lines it took me to a dark place (not surprise there) but there are no obvious corpses today at least.
Welcome, Bjorn. I almost feel that you have to go dark in order to need to build a parka. Very geeked to see what you and everybody writes on the poetry trail to this line.
It’s cold out there! I’d like something warm and wicked from the bar, please!
Welcome, Nolcha. I have just the thing: a shot of fireball, a shot of raspberry brandy, and coke. That sounds so good, I’m pouring two, one for me and one for you. Cheers!
Yum and thank you! Cheers!
You’re welcome 🙂
Hello dVersers! It’s hard to remember the time difference between my logging in from Boston vs from San Diego, California! But got in pretty close to pub opening today. Thanks for hosting, LIsa! Would love a cold chardonnay from the pub…..as we are enjoying sunshine and high 60s temps while Boston has had snow after snow after sleet and ice and is now, as I write, having 60 mph wind gusts that make it feel like 2 degrees outside! We’re in the right place. Will return a little later to read and reply — as we’re off to a museum now.
Welcome, Lillian. Glad you and hub are enjoying wonderful weather in CA. Yipes on the 60 mph wind! One glass of cold chardonnay coming right up. Cheers!
Hello lovely Lisa, a discreet sip of raspberry brandy would be just the ticket… only a sip, mind you, and no coke nor fireball. I’ve been eating pistachios too – would you like some? -sending them over with my 144 words.
PS thank you for filling me in on Alice Walker’s lineage, which makes her even more special, in my view xxx
Welcome, Kathy. One chilled raspberry brandy (how about a dish of vanilla ice cream on the side?) Yes, I would love some pistachios, thanks! Cheers!
You are welcome on Ms. Walker. I see her posting at Goodreads once in awhile 🙂
Mmmmm, raspberry brandy excellent with Vanilla ice cream. I didn’t realise Alice Walker still with us – I must explore more x
Great challenge Lisa! Nothing fancy for me this evening … a glass of Merlot please.
Thanks much, Helen. A glass of Merlot coming right up. Cheers!
Sorry missed Saturday’s Live open mic….keep trying to make it, and am sure must have been brill.
Once again the bar seems empty…O woe is me and my need for Guinness…
Ain, I’m here, pouring you a Guinness as I type… Cheers!
Ooooh!
Yes, I’m a bartending ninja, typing and pouring at the same time.
The best of the best kind…
What a fantastic and imaginative prompt! Well done.
Welcome, Sherry. Alice got me started and on from there it went. Thank you.
Love the prompt, Lisa! I was stymied and then inspired. Maybe must a hot chocolate, b/c I’m in Colorado until tomorrow and it’s brrrrrr!
whoops, “must” should have been “just”…
No worries!
Welcome, Kim. Glad you found inspiration to write to the prompt 🙂 Colorado in winter does sound brrrrrr. One hot chocolate coming right up. Cheers!
Thank you Li, especially for the resource and background material. A whiskey – double please 😉
Welcome, Paul. My pleasure on the resource and background material. I see Ms. Walker as a wise woman of the times. One to listen to and learn from.
One double whiskey coming right up, but pouring two. I need to warm up from this snow that keeps falling. 🙂 Cheers!
I love kd Lang! This is a wonderful prompt!
Welcome, Colleen. Yes there is honey in her voice that I find irresistible. Happy you like the prompt.
I couldn’t agree more, Lisa.
Hello, Lisa! Thanks for hosting. I was missing my brother today and this beautiful prompt came along so I wrote a letter. (^_^)
Welcome, Jay. My pleasure on hosting. Heading over to read your poem right now.
Late again, Li, but I have the excuse of a real world poet gathering at my local library last night where the theme was Collaboration…
Welcome, Andrew. Glad you made it. Can’t think of a better reason for being late. How did it go?? Would you care for a drink or a snack?
