Hello Friends, Björn here again!
Today it is time to write prose based on poetry. As you know I have tried to use poems from song lyrics every now and then. Today it is time for one of the most celebrated poets/songwriters/singers, namely Leonard Cohen (September 21, 1934 – November 7, 2016).
I remember coming across Leonard Cohen first when he released a record that really made into the lists (I’m your man, 1987), and I had friends informing me that these songs were really not the best of what he had done, and furthermore he was much more a poet than a singer songwriter. Still after that release I continued to listen to his records up till his last record, that was released just a month before he died (You want it darker).
From the title song, I have selected the following line:
There’s a lullaby for suffering
Now your challenge is to incorporate this line into a piece of prose that should not exceed 144 words. You may split the line, introduce punctuation but the order of the words has to remain the same.
When you have written your prose on your blog link it up by clicking on Me Linky below. Please do not forget to read and comment on other authors on the site.
If you want to share your best memory relating to Leonard Cohen you can also do so in the comment below.
Welcome and good evening… I am having a little cold so I might head off to bed early tonight. However the bar is well stocked and I have brought some of my home-baked crackers, with excellent French Cheese, salami and olives.
A good set of a line choice for a prompt, Bjorn. Leonard Chohen, like Bob Dillon has that gravely voice that becomes an aquired taste, while his words are totally different! He has a way of squeezing life out of words that you can’t help but listen to and say, Wow!
I agree… and that last record really had some very strong words.
:>)
Did you know Cohen and Dylan talked about song-writing? Dylan said the words came easy-peasy and Cohen said no way, I struggle and struggle to get it just right 🙂
I can imagine… some of Dylan’s poems are so wordy, while Cohens are sparse and exact.
Indeed! And, hey, let’s face it, songwriting comes easier for some than others!
Perhaps some overthink it to the point of losing the inspiration they started with!!
True enough. It took years for Cohen to write Hallelujah… but what a song, eh?
… and some evolve into fine wine!!
Yes!! 🙂
How very interesting! Thank you for sharing this with us.
My pleasure!
:>)
Hello Bjorn and Dwight and All. Happy Monday! Home-baked crackers and French cheese sounds tasty. I have my Arnold Palmer to drink already. Will link up in a few…
Here are cheese and crackers 🙂
❤
An evocative choice of a line from a song most aptly named, Björn. So yeah, it’s hard not to write a little darkly. I’d love to have some crackers and cheese and something to wash it down with!
Yes it is a dark line, but for me it worded the other way around…. my story was almost uplifting insted… cheese and crackers of course.
Oh yes, Björn! No way I can pass up on Leonard Cohen!
I look forward to that…:-)
😊
I just spouted nonsense. That’s what a weather headache will do to me. Do you have any aspirin behind the bar?
We have many kind of headache relievers…. of course we have aspirin, and maybe a glass of mineral water to take it?
Leonard Cohen demands such touches as home made crackers…what lyrics, what poetry….
Indeed… and sometimes dark, so dark
hi Bjorn
hi writers
cheese and crackers you say. oops I enjoy those a tad to much I had better leave some for everybody else!
Leonard Cohen touches so many
rog
Of course he touches in many many ways.
The first song I heard by him was “Everybody Knows”. But since I looked him up years ago, I have quite a few favorites, truly a unique talent. He is missed.
I agree… for me I think it was “first we take manhattan”
Great quote for prosery! Please pass the cheese & crackers and I’ll do some wine tasting while I read 🙂 Hope you sleep well, Bjorn.
I can promise you a some great cheese with my crackers… I have a good tasty Italian wine… how about that?
Sounds wonderful!
Hello everyone! 😊
Thanks for a great challenge Bjorn. Its just what I needed.🙏🏾😊
Glad you liked the challenge…
Hello Bjorn, thanks for hosting, great prompt. I was introduced to him by a quote, “There’s a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in” He was an amazing poet.
Great quote
I had to sleep on this one and this morning I woke up with a bit of prosery to share. Interesting prompt Bjorn – thanks for hosting.
