De Jackson here, aka WhimsyGizmo. A little bird told me it’s time again for my favorite prompt, the Quadrille. It’s a little invention of our own making here at dVerse, in which we pen poems of precisely 44 words, including one word we provide.
Today, I’d like you to…
Fly like a bird. Sing like a bird. Tell us why that caged bird sings. Use those wings to flutter us a poem that houses some form of the word bird.
Quadrille quills at the ready? Here’s some bird phraseology inspo:
Bluebird, blackbird, hummingbird, mockingbird. Birdwatching. Whirlybird. Lovebirds and ladybirds. Bird of paradise. Birdbath. Birdseed. Snowbird. Build us a birdhouse of feathers and phrase. Be free as a bird. Get a birdie in golf. Give us the birdseye view of something beautiful, or brutal. Flip us the bird, or say Bye Bye Birdie to Broadway.

Or lean into a bird idiom:
The early bird catches the worm.
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
Birds of a feather flock together.
Kill two birds with one stone.
Write any sort of birdbrained poem you choose; just be sure it contains some form of the word bird.

New to the Q? Here’s what to do:
This one’s for the birds! Just sing us a poem of precisely 44 words (not counting the title), including some form of the word bird. Post your poem on your own blog, and link up with us using the Mr. Linky below. Then fly your way across the blogosphere to read and comment on the incredible work of your fellow poets. The Quadrille is here all week, so be sure to come back and read and write some more!

Helloooo, Poets! So happy to see you here. I’ve stocked the bar with plenty of drinks, comfortable writing corners, and something I’m calling Poetic Birdseed (pretzels, pistachios, and cashews). Happy Poeming!
Chirp!
What a fun video! Thanks for sharing. Happy to see you here!
D, I love me some Billy Strings! Such a cool video to go with the song. I was blessed to see Billy and Crew live last year. They blew the house down!
Hello De and All. I enjoyed your intro, the poetry, and musical selections. My younger son is a big fan of TMBG. I’m all set for a drink but a dish of Poetic Birdseed sounds very tasty, please.
Comin’ right up, Lisa! Cheers!
Cheers!
Just the right word for Spring – no bird seeds for me though De – I’ve just had my supper
Just a drink then, Laura. Cheers!
Hi guys – question, can somebody point me to “the birth of the Quadrille?” I have a collection of them I’d like to publish (44 in all) and I want to give full credit where it is due. So can you please educate me about the genesis of the quadrille?
Hi, there!
You can read the first Quadrille post here at dVerse (by our very own Bjorn) here:
https://dversepoets.com/2016/01/18/quadrille-1/
It went live January 18, 2016…which means we’ve been writing them for 10 years now! Crazy! And as you can see from today’s Quadrille title, we’re on number 243 now!
Best of luck with your book! So happy you found so much inspiration here! 🙂
Thank you, that exactly what I was looking for! 🙂
I love this place.
One of a poet’s favorite things.
Yes! I was happily surprised we hadn’t used the word before. 😉
