Hello all, today it is time to do something that we haven’t prompted in a long time and that is the concept of verbification.

Personally I think verbs are so much more interesting than verbs and adjectives, but the dictionary is filled with nouns and adjectives that are just waiting to take action. Not only that, as verbs they may work even better as metaphors.

Verbs in my mind are also more interesting if they are transitive than intransitive (meaning that they need an object to work on).

When we have done this prompt before I have found that you should not overdo it, choose a few strong nouns or adjectives and think how they might act upon someone and how that action might be used as a metaphor.

Imagine how fireworks might taste as a verb:

“until we fireworked”

which to me could mean a quarrel or something used as the climax of an erotic poem depending on its context.

So bring out the dictionary and find nouns or adjectives that may turn your poem from descriptive to action-packed.

To transform a noun or adjective to a verb you may look at the ending.

  • The simplest case is no change, take email for instance as in: “Please email me your answers by Thursday”, however we may still see an imperfect: “She emailed me yesterday” or an s at the end in third person present tense.
  • You may end it with a suffix such as -ify as in personify, or -ize as in hospitalize.

For this prompt I will award those of you who are innovative enough to verbify to the extent that your spelling checker tells you it’s wrong.

For instance butterfly is past tense has to be butterflew don’t you think?

When you are ready with your poem, post it to your blog, link back to dVerse.

Then add it to Mr. Linky below, visit the other poet’s contributions, marvel and comment.

Remember to verse your mind, having fun and please if you want to, add something interesting or just say hi in the comments below.
