Last weekend, I surprised my wife with a trip to the beach. She was out of town at job fair, so once I situated our boys for the weekend with their grandmother, I snuck up to where she was working and snatched her away for a few days. Saturday morning we walked the beach for a couple miles and then came back along the oceanfront road, stopping in several of the shops.
One of the things that fascinated me, as we were walking back, was the bumper stickers on cars as well as those on power boxes and poles and really just about any surface imaginable. Some promoted local bands, some political view, some were hard to tell what they were for other than just art’s sake.
The thing is everyone had something to say.
Of course this got me to thinking about poetry, as many of us use poetry as our medium to share our views, beliefs or attitudes. And sometimes it is just for art’s sake with poetry as well.
With the introduction of bumpers on automobiles, it created another canvas. The precursor to actual bumper stickers were signs made of metal or wood hung from the bumper. It was not until the 1940s that what we think of as bumper sticks hit the market and became staple in our ability to express ourselves.
Today, I want us to write about bumper stickers.
Perhaps a sticker you have seen, or your own you would like to see, or the dangers of expressing the opinions we often find on them. Say what you need to say and have fun with this, I can see it going infinite directions.
So here’s how it works…
- Write your poem
- Post it on your blog
- Click the Mr. Linky button below, and in the new window that opens up input your name and direct url of the poem.
- Visit others who have taken the challenge.
- Have fun..!
Welcome to Poetics everyone! The pub is open, lets have some fun…Happy Thanksgiving to our Canadian poets…happy Saturday to everyone else…lets write some poetry!
great prompt brian! looking forward to reading what everybody is coming up with…woohoo – guess this is going to be a lot of fun!
happy saturday claudia! i think it could def get interesting…we shall see soon enough…so any riddles this afternoon? smiles.
first riddle…do you know what my fav car is….? smiles
is it convertible?
This will be fun.. I know just the sticker too..
Off to write some words!!!
woot…have at it lynne!
Brian you come up with some amazing stuff. Now I’m rolling through my head all the bumper stickers I’ve had over the years. I have no idea how I’ll make a poem out of them, but it should be fun to try. I shall return if and when I come up with something.
heres the thing…i googled bumper sticker poems and only found 2…which seems a shame….how can such a cultural phenom not have poetry…haha…there are some amazing bumper stickers out there…cant wait to see what people come up with…
Oh! I will be back soon. I must go write right now. 🙂
nice…looking forward to it beth!
The prompt took me in an odd direction. *shrug* It’s all good enough, right?
i liked yours a lot beth…food for thought for sure..
hey odd is good…and i think your verse made a great point creatively…
Brian…you have no idea (actually, you probably do) where my mind ran with this…I’m thinking political rant…but that’s subject to change without notice! 😉
nice…waiting on a good political rant on this one…
and congrats to all of you at The River for 10,000 hits!
And thanks to you for stopping by! My rant however…did not surface, but I did have a ton of fun! 😉
Fun prompt. I had something come up right away and maybe dashed off too quickly, I don’t know. But it’s the kind of prompt that lends itself to that–not too quickly, but to an immediate response. Also, I guess, I’m thinking of Yom Kippur today, though not sure how it all fits together.
Thanks.
nice, actually my first responses have to hit the paper quick…i figure i can always go back and rewrite…on my way over…
Not much in the way of a poem to do with mine but.. …I tried! 🙂
Thought it might give folks a smile too 🙂
i think you accomplished your goal…and will make sure to get out of the way if i see you coming..smiles…
Great story, Brian, and awesome prompt. Took me a bit to figure how to fit into the theme, but I’m happy with my end result. Looking forward to reading everyone else’s responses! As always, thanks to you and dVerse for this fun poetry venue.
i would be too…tight write…and one to make us think…that first stanza made me chuckle only at its blunt sad truth…
I hope you enjoy mine– “Save the earth, my ass!”
haha…sounds fun…
Pingback: Coexist Sticker « ZONGRIK
well I would never have got around to writing a poem about Bumper Stickers without this prompt 🙂
And I would have missed out.
I had a lot of fun with this, stepping right out of my usual style!
hey that is what we are here for…that and hedge does a pretty mean juggling act…
I put up the Coexist sticker, and ha, it’s starting to look like other people have “noticed” that sticker too. Interesting to see how many different takes there are on this sticker.
nice…just coming off dinner break…catching up….
Man, this was rougher than I thought it would be. I don’t think what I came up with was actually a poem, but it’s…..something. And I’ll probably offend enough people with it I’ll be taking it down before it’s all over. Oh well. I blame it all on Brian Miller.
woohoo i will take the blame for that one!!! hahaha.
Interesting prompt Brian. I Knew exactly which bumper sticker to use.
hey we try to keep it interesting around here you know…smiles. you dont want boring normal prompts do you…smiles.

What a fun idea, Brian. You are so creative! : )
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.
happy thanksgiving shawna! so you going to give it a try?
You know I did, B. 🙂 I really appreciated your encouragement. Once I started reading the other poems, I realized how different mine was (everyone else hates bumper stickers). So I almost deleted mine, but your kind words made me keep it. For now, anyway.
I’m at my son in laws bday part. Can’t comment but wanted to participate – still stuck in 5/7/5 over at my place. If you get a chance you can stop by but I won’t be back until Monday! Thanks everyone for participating in Haiku/Senryu!!! Much appreciated your support.
hope your weekend is well gay…will be by shortly…i think i read all of the haiku even though i did not participate…some fun stuff…
‘I can see it going infinite directions’ Brian, I hope you meant this because I immediately thought of virtue ethics and went down that road. Now everyone will see why I could never write bumper stickers :). Thanks for the excellent prompt.
most def…i love me some variety! haha on never writing bumper stickers…
This is fun but serious prompt. It would be interesting to read what the poets come up. Happy Sunday Brian. Picture of the car is cool.
OG…happy sunday to you to…though i am getting ready to go to bed saturday night…smiles. have a wonderful and and will see all of you in the morning…
Cool prompt 🙂 I had a wonderful day with my little girl celebrating her birthday with all things girly. When I saw the prompt, I sat down to write something, and I jumped on my soap box rather quickly. I’m afraid the final product might offend. I’m going to sit with it for a bit before I post to make sure.
hehe…cant wait to see it lori!!! glad you had a grand birthday adventure…i know you made her feel special…
My goodness, no one here likes bumper stickers. I don’t have any, but if I did I’d fear for my virtual life.
haha…i defnitely think there are some cool ones…some malicious ones…a few misguided ones…but def some cool ones…
alright peeps…being a light weight tonight…its 11 pm…going to bed…have fun over night and i will make coffee bright and early…
got busy today,
cooked up one, a foreign story retold,
Thanks, will read soon.
Great idea for a prompt. I’ve contributed my small offering.
Fun one. Added my link.
Have a good sunday, everyone. 🙂
happy sunday!
awesomely inspiring and unique prompt! I think I had too much fun with this one. can one have too much fun? yah, don’t answer that – lol
haha – i don’t think one can have too much fun…enjoyed your take on the prompt sheila…still giggling…
nice…too much fun can be a good thing…heading over to read….
alright, i am awake…overslept…ha…coffee is brewing and poetry to be read…
cat is kind of slow, but too fun not to give a go.
ah well worth the weight, as your rhyming bards held haste did not go to waste
I’m really looking forward to returning to read more poems when I get back from teaching this afternoon.

Great prompt, Brian! Looking forward to reading everyone’s take on it.
yours was fun….i am traveling about an hour from home now so will catch up when i get there….happy sunday everyone!
Thank you everyone on your support, I’m going to read your work. But, i need to get some sort of nic gum or patch, i’ll be back
This is a great prompt! I wish I was here… (only dropping by). There’s a actually a fantastic song in hebrew that an israeli author wrote for a fusion-hip hop group, that is made up from bumper stickers and connects directly to the political and social situation in Israel… even though i’m late for this (right?) I might try to write something. I will be by to read.
C U later 🙂
write it debbie and let us know on that song…still 8 hours to go…
Read them all what a creative group! If you do not find my comment I could not get through the blogspot comments(4 or 5) and maybe one other kind.
thanks for a great prompt, it made me think and work hard, but I finally posted something. I guess better a little late than never 🙂
cooked up one, have fun with it.
one never knows the potential benefits unless one tries new things.
very inspiring prompt.
Thanks for the opportunity.
forgive me, could not write a most current piece, but shared two old ones, somewhat related.
Thanks for the patience.
