Last week, Mark led us for Poetics to the wild and undiscovered corners of our soul.. and
today I’d love to take you back to childhood.
Do you remember afternoons, lying on the lawn, ice cream running warm and sticky down your arms and you were lost in other worlds..? Maybe you were just about to save a little boy from drowning… with Superman of course.. or plot a joke with Tick,Trick and Track.. or beating Romans with my hero Obelix… yes I confess… my childhood hero wasn’t Spiderman nor Batman but this fat and charming Gaul with a heart as big as the Menhirs he’s carrying around..
I think comic writers do an awesome job with modelling characters, they over-draw, they polarize and go to the extreme and we identify with their creations in the one or other way.
So the challenge for today is:
Take a comic character and write a poem about them, or maybe you want to create your very own comic hero..? do it.. and make us love, adore or hate them..
Write about someone who’s living in a comic, reads one or draws them..
Blur the worlds of phantasy and everyday…make us suffer, laugh or dream… thousands of opportunities… let’s have some fun together..
Here’s how it works…
- Write your poem
- Post it on your blog
- Click the Mr. Linky button below, and in the new window that opens up input your name and direct url of the poem.
- Visit others who have taken the challenge.
- Take a sip from the magic potion we’re brewing..and maybe we will find some Romans…smiles

Hi Claudia and Brian, Not sure this quite fits, and I should give credit to Riverdale; will need to look that up. Take care, k.

Thanks for hosting today Claudia–I was a little shaky about this one at first, but this ended up being a fun prompt for me. I was a big comic book aficianado in my salad days, before a movie had to be made for every character, so I drug an old verse out, bathed it in toxic waste, injected it with strontium 90 and gave it a few jolts of lightning just to see what kind of hero, or perhaps monster I could make. I’ll be back to make the rounds later and see what kind of comic con this turns out to be.
claudia said:
i definitely have to try this…esp. after reading the fine poem this procedure has created… will see where i can get some toxic waste now… ha
brian miller said:
nice…your methods came out with a dazzling display of heroism…smiles.

Claudia, thanks for the great prompt. We all need superheroes in our lives, I think. Wouldn’t it be nice? I submitted a link to my poem.
claudia said:
yes…we definitely need them..

On seeing the heading, I thought, ‘Oh no! We’re not going to have to be funny!’ I find that very hard. But of course that is the original meaning of ‘comic book’ and the reason comic strips were known as ‘the funnies’ — before authors discovered more uses for the form. I was relieved, however, to discover that humour is not required.
Hopefully I’ll b able to write a new poem in the time available; meanwhile I am sharing an old one which is right on topic. 🙂
claudia said:
lois lane was absolutely right on topic..smiles… just about to search needle and thread to stitch me a perfect man together.. smiles…nah.. we love their imperfection..don’t we..?

Often-times our actions are comic and mock-heroic. Here’s a view of our questionable pleasures. http://bit.ly/dxEjiG

Great poetic concept, Claudia. In 1969 I got into the graphics of Marvel Comics, and began collecting them; got up to 10,000 before I freaked at my own zeal and sold the collection so that I could return to college. With CGI, comic book heroes are finally being portrayed as we imagined them 40 years ago. My own poem, LET’S HEAR IT FOR GOLIATH, was terrific fun to write. I had not previously recorded myself reading it, so I did so for you. But I was so tickled during the recitation, I could barely get through it.

smiles…it was terrific fun to read as well..

Though I cannot stand The Adventures of Asterix (my grandma-in-law gave me one of those comics and I read the whole thing waiting for it to be funny) I found the prompt too good to pass up! Thanks 🙂
claudia said:
haha… i love them… and what i love most are the dialogues and characters…i even think they are funny..but maybe that’s because i live so close to the french border and the french DO have a special sense of humor…smiles

This sounds like great fun, Claudia. I wish Superman had been around today to bail me out of a muddle today. I’ll get right to this as soon as I can.
brian miller said:
hoping the muddle was not too bad laurie…
Laurie Kolp said:
You can read about it on my link. It’s all I’ve got except for this stupid limerick about Popeye:
He had this “Je ne sais quoi” quality
an air about him only I could see.
A seemingly nerdy guy
with muscles like Popeye;
this jukebox hero who rescued me.

Finished up reading poems for FormForAll. Things very agitated here. I don’t believe I’ll have time for a new write but wanted to pop ’round the pub and say hi to everyone and let you know how much I appreciate your support. This is my sanity escape–don’t think I could do without y’all at this time. Sending hugs and a round of drinks to everyone.
claudia said:
much love your way Gay..

I’ve written a few poems in the recent past that depict a comedic idiot in a story-like misfortune way. There is some foul language and sexual connotations, so I just want to know if I can post it anyways.

Great prompt btw, enjoyed thinking over all the comics I used to read with my bro and then often fight about, because as we all know, The Silver Surfer kicks Spidermans butt every time!
