I’m addicted to words, I love how the sound of them, I love their meaning and their etymology. It was the love of words that made me start with poetry. My love had been dormant for many years, hidden under layers of other stuff, but started to bloom as I dived into the world of twitter. My addiction is so high follow a number of word prompts on twitter and I subscribe to word of today prompts on email. I even know the abbreviation (WOTD). Sometimes the word is strange and awkward like hemidemisemiquaver or buckminsterfullerene (try to write haiku with those), and sometimes beautiful words that just breathe poetry, like verdant, crimson or sussurus. I know many of you share my love (if not addiction) and it would be interesting to know how you capture these words, if you have any favorite words, or even those words you tend to overuse like a broken record. I know I have my own embargo against some overused word. By the way, my favorite word might be whiffle (a rare and precious word).
Welcome to Open Link everyone, my name is Björn Rudberg, and I’m you bartender tonight. Most of you know the drill, but there are a few number of house rules here at the bar.

Bjron, yes I’m addicted. I’ll back to you on favorite words because what my ears stand up was your mention of words your embargo of overused words. Years ago when I was an admin of a forum we’d discuss this and even a few challenges about overused words in poetry. Oh the discussions that sparked. Anyhoo, words that make me wince in modern poems: soul, desire, heart, passion, rose, fire and sorrow.
Thanks for tending bar. I have club soda, splash of cranberry and lime, please.

Happy OLN! My addiction to words drives me from before I wake until I crawl off to sleep. There have been occasions where I have found poetry on my cell phone that I created in my sleep without realizing it. Oh… Maybe I’m mad…

Accent is one reason… 🙂
Martin Shone said:
It is really quite strange, because in life I stutter, yet when I read my poetry I don’t.

Thanks for reminding me to pay more attention to #WOTD posts. You never know what might prompt a poem or, in my case, a limerick. 🙂
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Oh yes.. and the challenge of fitting a limerick in 140 characters … 🙂 I have tried a few but with some of the hashtags it becomes impossible..

All my writing is in English also, which is my first language (I also have a smidgen of Focals as Gailge = words in the Irish language) which should be my first language but that story is for another day. Yay favorite words! My favorite word is much maligned and considered very naughty. So naughty, in fact, it’s first initial is placed in front of the word “bomb” to describe it. Poor word. It makes a guest appearance in my poem today.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Nothing like a little advertising.. I have used the word scorch which is one of today’s words

“Catastrophe.” I love me a good catastrophe…
Thanks for hosting, Bjorn! (My name is Marya, and I am addicted to words)
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I think I might write a poem with all the favorite words we collect here.. catastrophe… yes a word sounding much kinder than it is…
Marya said:
Great idea. And I already percolating on “buckminsterfullerene” — there is a haiku there 🙂
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I wrote a limerick on that one once… but I think it’s lost in twitter somewhere.
Tony Maude said:
Hi Björn and thanks for hosting tonight. You’ll have plenty of daylight to read by, I should think … smiles.
One of my favourite words is dreich – although I’m not so fond of the weather it describes.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
A little Scottish.. and I love kirk as well then,…
Tony Maude said:
Kirk is a nice-sounding word. In Scotland we have lots of fabulous words that have been absorbed into the English we speak; lovely words like ceilidh and skean dhu. But dreich is one of my favourites because that one syllable is so descriptive.

Favorite words? Scrabble is one–not just the game either. Deciduous is another. Rose, cellar, doorway, drum and lots of onomatopoeia. Favorites are still in the testing phase. In today’s post, based on Brian’s puzzle prompt, I used the words “ache for” because I like that sound better than the sound of addiction.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
ah that’s great… yes onomatopoeia is great (except to spell)
Tony Maude said:
Loved your Scrabble (TM) poem, Susan … smiles

i love space words… trajectory…axis… orb…. galaxy…ha… think i should apply for the next moon mission….smiles
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Oh yes astronomy words can be great… orbit or meteor too…
Linda Kruschke said:
I love words, too! Frankly, I don’t completely trust people who don’t. 😉 One of my favorite words is “beloved.” I never thought of myself as a poet until the last year or so, but it is a wonderful way to arrange few words to convey great meaning. One of my favorite books (and online apps) is the thesaurus. It is great for finding just the right word with the right number of syllables to complete a poem (especially helpful when writing form poetry). Peace, Linda
brian miller said:
i use an online one…sometimes after writing i look for word substitutions….
Audrey Howitt said:
I love words, and stories and poetry and how all of that makes me feel! It is all even more awesome when I can sing those words— Happy OLN!

Maggie Grace said:
I just got home and must leave again soon. Bjorn got me involved with many writing challenges. Met him on twitter and his writing is amazing. I think I probably overuse heart and soul in my haiku but then again think that’s what is at the “heart” of haiku…expressing the soul. Or perhaps any writing. Sorry didn’t have time to read thru previous comments.
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
I have overused colors I think in my poetry…
brian miller said:
i have an elipsis addiction….just a small one….not when i write….but when i comment…

hi Bjorn and everyone. thank you for hosting tonight’s open link night, this will only be my second. i did want to mention that WP, blogger are not accepting any of my id’s, so i cannot ‘like’ or post a comment, this has happened a lot this past week and i’m sorry to say it’s happening again tonight.
i’ll keep trying though. 🙂
Björn Rudberg (brudberg) said:
Ah it could be that it end up in the spam filter.. sometimes that happens.. and it take a while to find them. This comment came up all right 😉
whocouldknowthen said:
on blogger and sometimes on WP, if there is no ‘like’ button, the box pops up asking for i.d., and this week it just doesn’t accept the truth! i can ‘like’ or comment from an email notification, just not directly on someone’s blog. why, i really have no clue, but others are having this issue too.
just really wanted everyone to know. 🙂

we have some pretty cool words in our local dialect that don’t really exist in real german but bring things so to the point…. “bschnotte” for example – you use it when clothes don’t really fit and you look in them like a sausage for example…ha… bschnotte…and you know exactly what it looks like

ha. not a word you want to use in describing someone…particularly if you are in a crowd of females…lol….
Maggie Grace said:
Must leave after this comment but I think colors are wonderful in haiku. They are rich and sometimes specific emotions are associated with them…blue can be very sad or happy depending on context. Great haiku words. Can there really be overuse when so few words allowed. Like Basho’s frog and pond? hehe
Maggie Grace said:
Any writing…not just haiku. Am being very focused on that today for some reason.
brian miller said:

Thanks for hosting, Bjorn, and I do share your addiction. I am a fan of “whiffle” and love the sound of “sussufrus” (though have no idea what it means–off to roam the dictionary). It sounds like a lovelier version of “sibilant.” My favorites are hard to pin down, but “ostracon” is always good for something–as is “palimpsest” (in today’s offering). “Chiaroscuro” is a long standing favorite as is “impasto.” You’d think I were a painter. . . 🙂

Words! I am addicted as well. 🙂 “Whiffle” is a great word, my all time favorite word is paracosm. I love saying it and I love its definition. Though, I have an affinity toward words with double letters.

Hi Björn, I’m finally home from work and settling in to my favorite seat to read a while. Nice to see you tending the bar tonight! Loved your intro. I think all of us are here because of our addiction to words! One of my friends from Wales writes the most amazing poetry, and can always be counted on to share a rare word or two in each writing. I usually have to look them up, then I file them away. One never knows when the word “smior” or “quondam” may come in handy, and have already used the word “petrichor” in one of my own. BTW, I too prefer structured poetry, but occasionally throw in a Free Verse for good measure, today’s share is the latter. Heading into the pub to read now. Stop & say hello if you get a chance!!
brian miller said:
